The state’s Solicitor-General, Martin Hinton QC, has been appointed to the bench of the Supreme Court — following in the steps of two Chief Justices. On Thursday, the State Government announced Mr Hinton would join the bench following the retirement this month of Justice John Sulan. Mr Hinton is the third Solicitor-General in recent legal history to move from the Crown Solicitor’s Office to the bench. Both current Chief Justice Chris Kourakis and his predecessor, John Doyle, worked as Solicitor-General prior to their appointments. The announcement follows an embarrassing series of events, earlier this month, in which District Court Judge Barry Beazley was appointed an Auxiliary Justice after having refused the role. Mr Hinton is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Law at Adelaide University and is widely published in legal journals. He has an extensive history of casework across both Australia and the UK, having prosecuted matters ranging from breaches of fishing law to murder. He was appointed Solicitor-General in August 2008 and, in the eight years prior, worked as a senior prosecutor in the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and served as Deputy DPP. Mr Hinton has routinely appeared in the High Court, representing the State Government in challenges to bikie laws, and the DPP in contentious constitutional matters. They include Henry Keogh’s earlier appeals against his conviction, the case of Chad Parenzee — who endangered his partners through unprotected sex — and the Eugene McGee case. He is renowned for his expertise in ‘white collar’ crime and has led high-profile cases including the prosecution of Mobil for an oil spill at Port Stanvac. Mr Hinton prosecuted Josiah Finch for a shooting murder at McDonalds at Camden Park, and Vicki Brooks and Dennis Childs for fatally setting a man alight in the Marion Hotel car park. http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/south-australia/solicitorgeneral-martin-hinton-qc- named-as-newest-justice-of-the-supreme-court-of-south-australia/news- story/81d8bbfb69b4221388a170adba44b242 .
