TV Formats in Europe
TV Formats in Europe Given the prolonged advertising recession and the fact that several major titles have peaked, the TV formats market in Europe is showing remarkable resilience. The value created by the top 100 formats was $2,931 million in 2013 for 84 European channels across the 16 territories and 21 distributors, according to the TV Formats in Europe report. The 2013 figure was 3.3% down on the 2012 total, but up on 2011. The number of hours broadcast reached 28,386 in 2013, nearly the same as 2012. The UK is the TV formats leader in Europe – just ahead of France. The value created by formats for UK broadcasters was $600 million in 2013, down from $677 million in 2012. France recorded $599 million in 2013, up from $547 million in 2012. The UK, France, Germany and Italy accounted for 72% of Europe’s total value created in 2013. The top 10 broadcasters accounted for two-thirds of the total value created in Europe for 2013 – which means that the remaining third was shared by 74 channels. France’s TF1 ($332 million) led the pack again, followed by Italy’s Rai 1 and the UK’s BBC1. The total number of hours broadcast in Europe for the 100 formats was 28,386 in 2013; very close to 2012. The UK was the leader again, despite its 2013 total (3,935) being considerably lower than in 2012 (4,623). Romania took third place, having added 645 hours to its total in 2013. Introduction Twenty-five years ago, Ithiel de Sola Pool, an MIT political science professor, wrote a book called, Technologies of Freedom. [FN1] In it, he explained how technology was causing the collapse of boundaries separating publishers, broadcasters, and common-carrier communications enterprises and that the melding of these traditionally separate categories would require rethinking law and policy. Today, technology is causing the collapse of boundaries separating movies, television, the Internet, and videogames--the traditionally separate categories of video entertainment. The melding of these traditionally separate cat- egories requires rethinking the economics, business strategies, and legal frameworks that shape video entertainment. While digital technology has decimated the traditional gatekeepers in the recorded music industry, [FN2] a different fate may await the established providers of video entertainment, even as it opens the gates to the marketplace for indie artists and producers, eroding the control of traditional gatekeepers. As with music, there is a flood of new creative content available to consumers--far more than they can sort through. -

New basic tier from Canal Digital Canal Digital's cable TV customers will receive five more channels in their basic tier. The newcomers are: Disney Channel, The Voice, Star!, Showtime and BBC World. "Our cable TV customers have told us what they would like to see in the new basic tier. Canal Digital Kabel TV has conducted comprehensive surveys to form the basis for the wide selection of TV channels in the basic tier. The surveys indicate that the Norwegian channels are the most essential, with Swedish channels also figuring prominently, while interest in specialist channels focusing on documentary, nature and culture appears to be increasing. With these five new channels Canal Digital is strengthening the cable TV market's best basic tier," says Svein Erik Davidsen, Managing Director of Canal Digital Norway. The Disney Channel, catering for children and families, is entirely commercial-free and broadcasts classic and new films as well as series. The Voice is a music channel that promotes Norwegian artists and pop music and international hits from all over the world. Star! is an entertainment channel that follows the stars of the fashion, music and film worlds, both on stage and backstage. The film channel Showtime broadcasts action movies, thrillers and science fiction movies from the big film studios. BBC World, the international news channel, will no longer be limited to the Bergen area, it will now be available for all of Canal Digital's approximately 400,000 cable TV customers in Norway. Canal Digital has developed a new method for channel selection. Direct selection from content categories, which was used in 2002, has been replaced by comprehensive surveys among a representative cross-section of Canal Digital's customers, an approach that Canal Digital will continue to use in the foreseeable future. -
