For Immediate Release Oklahoma Attorney General drops charges against Paul Jacob CHICAGO, January 22 – The Sam Adams Alliance is relieved to learn that Oklahoma Attorney General Drew Edmondson, after finding himself with his back against the wall due to a string of embarrassing legal failures, has dropped all charges against initiative rights activist and Sam Adams Alliance senior adviser Paul Jacob. The charges brought against us by the attorney general have now been dismissed. They should never have been brought in the first place,” Jacob said in a statement. “We did not break the law and, as we all now know, the law itself is unconstitutional. Sam Adams Alliance President John Tsarpalas echoed Jacob’s sentiments. “Paul should have never been prosecuted in the first place. It’s a shame that Paul and his family had to endure the stress and hardship caused by this senseless prosecution.” Jacobs was indicted along with Susan Johnson, President of National Voter Outreach and Oklahomans in Action leader, Rick Carpenter, in October of 2007. The “Oklahoma 3” as they have become nationally known as, were charged with "conspiracy to defraud the state,” after they conducted a petition drive in 2005 for the Oklahoma TABOR initiative, which would have placed a Taxpayer Bill of Rights initiative on Oklahoma's November 2006 general election ballot. “The taxpayers of Oklahoma have to foot the enormous legal bills because a power- hungry Attorney General was only concerned about his own political ambitions,” Tsarpalas said. “Dropping the charges against

  • Conservative Statement to End Death Penalty with 250+ Signatories
Statement of Support to End the Death Penalty We have come to the conclusion that the death penalty does not work and can’t be made to work, not in spite of our conservative principles, but because of them. There are many reasons why growing numbers of conservatives are questioning the death penalty. Some of us are concerned that instead of making us safer, capital punishment has proven to be a costly and ineffective government program. Others of us are concerned that the death penalty makes too many mistakes. Still others are concerned that the death penalty has no place in a culture seeking to promote life. In light of its track record, we call on our fellow conservatives to reexamine the death penalty and demonstrate the leadership needed to end this failed policy. Moment of Reflection Chair Bill Redpath called for a moment of reflection, a practice at LNC meetings. Opportunity for Public Comment Susan Hogarth (NC) distributed material to the LNC covering Liberty Decides, the APRC and the Party’s mission statement. Susan praised the Liberty Decides program as being innovative and useful. Susan argued Liberty Decides was not an ‘objective measure of excitement and strength’ as advertised. She suggested the program be altered to indicate ‘how many unique donors each candidate has brought to the program’. Susan recommended we keep the APRC rather than abolish it. Finally, Susan noted “staff are acting is if there is a bona fide Mission Statement”. She was referring to Article 3 of the Bylaws, Purposes, which states a purpose of the Party is to move ‘public policy in a libertarian direction by building a political party that elects Libertarians to public office’. She requested LNC to “direct staff to make no further references to the LP’s Mission of ‘electing Libertarians to office’.” Barbara Howe (NC) noted a former LNC board member; Candi Copas has given birth to a baby girl.

  • Who Is Annette Bosworth?
Citizens in Charge Foundation Report: South Dakota’s Prosecution of Dr. Annette Bosworth By Paul Jacob Citizens in Charge Foundation 13168 Centerpointe Way, Suite 202 Woodbridge, VA 22193 ABOUT PAUL JACOB Paul Jacob is president of Citizens in Charge, a grassroots citizens’ lobby working to protect and expand the initiative and referendum rights of every American without regard to politics or party, and Citizens in Charge Foundation, which educates and litigates to protect petition rights. Jacob is perhaps best known for leading the term limits movement as it swept the nation in the 1990s. For more than a decade, Paul was the term limits movement’s strongest voice, running U.S. Term Limits, the largest such group in the nation. “Jacob is one of the most honest men in Washington,” wrote Paul Weyrich, the late conservative icon. On the other hand, for his work to impose term limits on Congress, the late columnist Robert Novak good-naturedly dubbed Jacob “the most hated man in Washington.” Through his work for term limits, as well as for spending caps, property rights measures and candidate ballot access, Paul has been involved in over 175 statewide petition drives. He has also testified in court as an expert witness regarding the petition process. “If there's anyone who's been involved in more citizen initiative campaigns in the history of this country [than Paul Jacob],” said Los Angeles Times reporter Joe Mathews, “I'm not aware of them.” Paul Jacob hosts Common Sense, an online and print opinion program sponsored by Think Freely Media, reaching tens of thousands of online readers and e-mail subscribers.

Government is the problem: Symbolic trajectories of the contemporary conservative movement By © 2018 Michael Eisenstadt B.A., University of Nevada, Las Vegas, 2012 M.A., University of Nevada, Las Vegas, 2014 Submitted to the graduate degree program in Communication Studies and the Graduate Faculty of the University of Kansas in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Rowland Co-Chair: Co-Chair Name Date Approved: 04 June 2018 ii Abstract The rightward shift of the contemporary conservative movement represents one of the most significant developments in American culture and politics over the last forty years. While numerous studies in rhetoric have tackled case studies of specific events, speeches, and texts, there is not yet a longitudinal study that traces the symbolic developments of the conservative movement over this period. In this dissertation, I fill that gap in rhetorical studies by arguing that the contemporary conservative movement was entelechialized by a limited government worldview, leading conservative Republicans to refuse compromise even when that refusal posed grave political risks. In four case studies, I analyze a number of key influences on the symbolic trajectories of the conservative movement, including Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush, Newt Gingrich, Patrick Buchanan, and contemporary conservative opinion media.
