OPUNTIA 434 Late January 2019 Opuntia is published by Dale Speirs, Calgary, Alberta. It is posted on www.efanzines.com and www.fanac.org. My e-mail address is: [email protected] When sending me an emailed letter of comment, please include your name and town in the message. ABOUT THE COVER: 8 Street SW under the railroad tracks in downtown Calgary. The transcontinental railroad is the southern boundary line of the downtown core. The other side is the Beltline district. Tens of thousands of people live on each side of the tracks in condo towers. In the absence of an oil pipeline to the Pacific coast, each day numerous kilometres-long tanker trains like this one head west along these tracks to the tidewater. AS I STROLLED OUT ONE DAY 2019-01-12 photos by Dale Speirs In the last issue of this zine, I remarked that January was a dull time in Calgary. I wrote too soon, for the day after I posted that issue, the Yellow Vest Convoy came through the city in support of the oil pipelines. As I strolled down the Stephen Avenue pedestrian mall where it terminates in front of City Hall, there was a crowd at the intersection. The photos sum up the event. 2 Justin Trudeau has made himself even more unpopular out west than his father Pierre, an achievement that took some doing. Both father and son did it by messing up petroleum policy, Pierre with his National Energy Policy, and Justin by his timidity in dealing with anti-pipeline groups funded by foreign petroleum interests.

The publication of District Energy Space has become an annual tradition for the International District Energy Association (IDEA) since 1990. Compilations beyond North America were initiated in 2004. This issue features a compilation of data provided by our members including the number of buildings and their area in square feet that have been committed or recommitted to district energy service in North America during calendar year 2019, or previously unreported for recent years. Each year, IDEA asks its member systems to provide information on buildings that committed or recommitted to district energy service during the previous calendar year. To qualify for consideration in District Energy Space, a renewal must be a contracted building or space that had been scheduled to expire during the calendar year and was renewed under a contract with a duration of 10 years or more. Year-to-year rollover--simple continuation of service to existing buildings is not considered renewal. Established in 1909, the International District Energy Association serves as a vital communications and information hub for the district energy industry, connecting industry professionals and advancing the technology around the world. With headquarters just outside of Boston, Mass., IDEA comprises over 2,400 district heating and cooling system executives, managers, engineers, consultants and equipment suppliers from 25 countries.

Favorite Metal Albums Tour Justin Trudeau: The North Star He was raised in jet-set privilege but overcame tragedy to become Canada's prime minister. Is he the free world's best hope? By Stephen Rodrick Michael Kappeler/ZUMA Let's begin by synchronizing our watches. We are in the Eastern time zone. The legislative session is over, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is about to give his wrap-up press conference. The reporters trudge into the gallery, grumbling, as reporters like to do, about trac and editors. Someone gives the "10 seconds" signal, and Trudeau strides to the podium. He gives a nod and starts ticking o his accomplishments. The rst is self-praise for cutting taxes on the middle class and raising them on the one percent. "We've given nine out of 10 families more money each month to help with the costs of raising their kids," Trudeau says. RELATED Canada's Legal Weed: What You Need to Know Justin Trudeau introduced a bill that would make marijuana legal – but what will that look like, and what will it mean for the U.S.? It's strange to witness: He speaks in a modulated, indoor voice. His dark hair is a color found in nature. At home, there is a glamorous wife and three photogenic children, still not old enough to warm his seat at next week's G-20 summit or be involved in an espionage scandal.
