Visiting Afghanistan opened my eyes to the severe conditions people are living in, espe- cially in Shortepa, in Northern Afghanistan where a growing number of people are ad- dicted to opium; it’s their only means for controlling and relieving pain. This has led to a massive culture of dependency. Many of those dependent on opium in Shortepa are women who use the drug to relieve pain caused by working for many hours on heavy weaving looms. While in Shortepa, I met a 39-year-old mother of eight. Just six months before, she gave birth to twins and has been very ill ever since. She had been weaving rugs all her life, including during her pregnancy. She took opium to relieve her back and stomach pain. Now she doesn’t have the energy to get up. UNCLASSIFIED Mokusatsu: One Word, Two Lessons B~ (b) (3)-P.L. 86-36 Unclassified rt;- XI\ mokusatsu "'' •ir-suru, v. take no notice of; treat (anything) with silent contempt; ignore [by keeping silence]; remain in a wise and masterly inactivity. -Kenkyusha's )/ew Japanese - English Dictionary, p. 1129. The story of how an ill-chosen translation of the Japanese word mokusatsu led to the United States decision to drop the world's first atomic bomb on Hiroshima is well known to many linguists. But perhaps it would not be amiss to retell it briefly just in case some reader of this essay is unfamiliar with the word-and in the hope that readers may be inspired to avoid the two tragic linguistic errors that the story points up. In July of 1945 allied leaders meeting in Potsdam submitted a stiffly-worded declaration of surrender terms and waited anxiously · for the Japanese reply. The terms had included a statement to the· effect that any negative answer would invite "prompt and utter destruction." Truman, Churchill, Stalin, and Chiang Kai-Shek stated that they hoped that Japan would agree to surrender un conditionally and prevent devastation of the Japanese homeland and that they patiently awaited Japan's answer. Reporters in Tokyo questioned Japanese Premier Kantaro Suzuki about his government's reaction to the Potsdam Declaration. Since no formal decision had been reached at the time, Suzuki, falling back on the politician's old standby answer to reporters, replied that he was withholding comment. He used the Japanese word mokusatsu, derived from the word for "silence." As can be seen from the dic tionary entry quoted at the beginning of this essay, however, the word has other meanings quite different from that intended by Suzuki.

Running head: HIP HOP AND LITERACY 1 Hip hop and Literacy in the Lives of Two Students in a Transitional English Course A dissertation submitted to the Division of Research and Advanced Studies of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in the College of Education, Criminal Justice and Human Services Literacy and Second Language Studies University of Cincinnati Deborah M. Sánchez, M.Ed. Dr. Susan Watts-Taffe (Chair) Dr. Chester Laine (Co-chair) Dr. Carmen Kynard (Member) Dr. Gulbahar Beckett (Member) HIP HOP AND LITERACY 2 Abstract This qualitative dissertation study investigated the following research question: How does Hip hop influence the literate lives, i.e., the connections of Hip hop to readings, writings and other communicative practices, of students who placed into transitional college English courses? The impetus for the study came from the importance that Hip hop has in the lives of young people (Smitherman, 1997). The participants in this study, Dionne and Mike, were students placed into a 1st year non-credit bearing English course, also known as a transitional course (Armstrong, 2007), at a 4-year university. The study employed tools of ethnography (Heath & Street, 2008), such as interviews, classroom observations and textual analysis of students‘ language and literacy practices in spaces inside and outside of the classroom. This study is conceptually framed within cultural studies (Hicks, 2003, 2005, 2009; Nelson, Treichler, & Grossberg, 1992) and sociocultural studies (Dyson & Smitherman, 2009; Street, 2001). Data were analyzed using linguistic analysis (Alim, 2006) and textual analysis (Kellner, 2009).

INTD 497, SECTION 4 AFRICA IN MEDIA AND POP CULTURE FALL 2014 McGill University Fridays, 8:35 – 11:25 LEA 212 Instructor: Nicholas Barber Office Hours: Wed, 2 -5, Peterson 212 (or by appointment) [email protected] Image: Lekan Jeyifous, Victoria Island, Lagos 2081 A.D. Twitter: nccbarber http://www.vigilism.com/Ikire-Jones-Africa-2081-A-D The purpose of this course is to examine and critique the ways in which “Africa” has been constructed as an object of Western knowledge. Readings and discussions will interrogate how Africa and Africans have been portrayed to outside audiences historically and contemporarily, as well as the socio-political ramifications of such portrayals. The course will also place considerable emphasis on the ways in which African individuals and groups act to put forward alternate visions of African realities and to reveal the flaws, contradictions, and simplifications inherent in outside images of Africa. Course readings and topics will be divided into three sections. The first section—Representing Africa and Africans in Historical Perspective—will provide context, tracing the evolution of Western representations of Africa from the pre-colonial era to the present day. The second section—The Ethics of Engagement—will be the longest. During this section students will examine contemporary Western engagements with and representations of Africa and Africans, and will examine their own positionality vis-à-vis these process. Sub-topics covered will include human rights discourse, media portrayals, international aid and development, and voluntourism. The final section of the course—Writing Back, Challenging Stereotypes—will attempt to chart a path forward.

Earlonne: Glad to hear it. As you remember, a while back we did a call out asking folks in prison to send a snail mail updates about what's happening inside prison during this COVID-19 pandemic. And... Nigel: We finally got some responses. Earlonne: Mail takes its time coming out of prison. Nigel: Yep. So, let's start with Richard Gross. He's in Pennsylvania at the State Correctional Institute at Phoenix. He writes, "At first the coronavirus didn't mean much here. It dominated the news cycle and fed the jailhouse rumor mills, also known as inmate.com." That's what you call “Prison Twitter.” Earlonne: Nah, actually Nyge. That's what your other co-host Rahsaan called “Prison Twitter.” Nigel: That's right. Earlonne: As you know, prison do produce a ton of gossip. Nigel: Richard's letter continues, "It got everyone's attention when they canceled all visits and stopped all our outside volunteers coming in. As a sop, they threw us 1 some free phone calls and emails. Next, they handed out masks made by Pennsylvania Correctional Industries. The library limited attendance to only ten people at a time, as long as they were wearing their masks. Earlonne: Whew. Ten people. That's not a lot! You know, the library is one of them spots where you hang out at.
