“S.S. KUALA” Researched Passenger List Sunk at Pom Pong Island 14 February 1942 [Version 6.8.0; April 2017] Preface: This list and document have been compiled as a memorial and out of empathy and respect to the women, children and men who lost their lives in that cruel attack by Japanese bombers on the small coastal ship, converted into an auxiliary vessel, “SS. Kuala” on 14 February 1942, twelve hours after it escaped from Singapore. This was the day before Singapore surrendered to the Japanese. Many of the women and children were killed on the ship itself, but even more by continued direct bombing and machine gunning of the sea by Japanese bombers whilst they were desperately trying to swim the few hundred yards to safety on the shores of Pom Pong Island. Many others were swept away by the strong currents which are a feature around Pom Pong Island and, despite surviving for several days, only a handful made it to safety. The Captain of the “Kuala”, Lieutenant Caithness, recorded of the moment “…thirty men and women floated past on rafts and drifted east and then south – west, however only three survivors were picked up off a raft on the Indragiri River, a man and his wife and an army officer…”. The bombing continued even onto the Island itself as the survivors scrambled across slippery rocks and up the steep slopes of the jungle tangled hills of this small uninhabited island in the Indonesian Archipelago – once again, Caithness, recorded “…but when the struggling women were between the ships and the rocks the Jap had turned and deliberately bombed the women in the sea and those struggling on the rocks…”. -

Railway transportation evidently more efficient than road transportation. Trans-Sumatra railway construction can be a solution for transportation problem in Sumatra Island. This analysis integrated railway and port to improve economic development in 8 provinces on Sumatra using Spanning Tree and Dijkstra algorithm. It need 1965 kilometers of railway to connect all the 8 provinces. It also generates 1518 kilometers as the distance of Malahayati Port to Panjang Port connection. This integrated system can be a breakthrough solution for Sumatra transportation problem in economic development and the Malacca Strait traffic problem. William Liddle Professor Jeremy Wallace Professor Marcus Kurtz Copyrighted by Lan Hu 2011 Abstract Can a one-party-dominant authoritarian regime survive in a modernized society? Why is it that some survive while others fail? Singapore and Taiwan provide comparable cases to partially explain this puzzle. Both countries share many similar cultural and developmental backgrounds. One-party dominance in Taiwan failed in the 1980s when Taiwan became modern. But in Singapore, the one-party regime survived the opposition’s challenges in the 1960s and has remained stable since then. There are few comparative studies of these two countries. Through empirical studies of the two cases, I conclude that regime structure, i.e., clientelistic versus professional structure, affects the chances of authoritarian survival after the society becomes modern. This conclusion is derived from a two-country comparative study. Further research is necessary to test if the same conclusion can be applied to other cases. Industrial Infrastructure: Growing in Tandem with the Economy – Industrialisation has driven the engine of Singapore’s remarkable economic transformation since it gained internal self-government. This economic growth has developed in tandem with the industrial infrastructure landscape – its foundations were laid first in standard factories, and as the economy moved up the value chain towards a knowledge- driven phase, with ever more specialised industrial parks and innovative solutions. Singapore has had to deal with the constant challenge of staying relevant and competitive, while addressing the inherent constraints of land and labour. It is a story of visionary leadership, strong institutions, planning over a long-term horizon but adjusting flexibly in the short term, using crises as opportunities for learning and change, working with markets, and constant innovation. This study presents the progression of Singapore’s economic policies over the various phases of growth, and the corresponding developments in the industrial infrastructure. It also delves into how this integrated approach has occurred through the dynamics of the institutional structures and Singapore’s strategic industry choices over the years. The Singapore Urban Systems Studies Booklet Series draws on original Urban Systems Studies research by the Centre for Liveable Cities, Singapore (CLC) into Singapore’s development over the last half-century. Appendix 1 The Influence of Bushido: Why Japanese officers drove PoWs to work unreasonably hard Bushido, developed in feudal Japan, still had a strong influence on Japanese officers during World War II. Bushido demanded absolute loyalty and exacted the penalty of suicide (by self-immolation or disembowelment) for a dishonourable result. All the railway officers realised how important the Burma–Thailand Railway was for the survival of the Japanese army in Burma. So they knew if the completion of the railway were delayed and put the Burma army in danger, their regimental commander was sure to commit suicide for the dishonour, and the officer who did not do his part on time and caused the delay should also commit suicide, according to Bushido. This is the main factor which drove the officers to force PoWs to complete the daily quota of their work by all means, as the daily quota was based on the minimum required to complete the railway on time. Thus PoWs were forced to work over the standard work time even in miserable conditions. In the Japanese army, orders are seen as absolute. Lower-ranking officers were not allowed to refuse the order to attack an enemy position. However the orders on engineering projects were flexible because of the nature of the work. The officer who did not complete the work on time might be demoted or at worst fired, never put to death. As an example, the railway regiment commanders did not accept the order to bring forward the completion of the Burma–Thailand Railway by two months, though this could cause demerit in their career.
