Kata kunci: Kepimpinan wasatiyyah, Ketahanan diri, Ketahanan nasional ii Abstract The formation of the Global Movement of Moderates Foundation (GMMF) and the Wasatiyyah Institute of Malaysia serves as among the latest novel initiatives of the Malaysian Government in promoting the concept of moderation as well as a balance approach towards all aspects of life, by way of appreciating core and principal values and ethics that are based upon the philosophy of wasatiyyah in all aspects of life (Najib Razak, 2012). Be that as it may, the wasatiyyah concept has been manipulated, misused and misunderstood by various parties, in part due to one’s ignorance or by public misconceptions within their distorted environments (Muhammad Zahir Ismail, Ermy Azziaty Rozali, & Wan Kamal Mujani, 2015). Specifically, this research study focuses on the observations of whether there exists an influence of wasatiyyah leadership to the student leaders of Malaysian public universities – in terms of their self and national resiliency. This study also looks into several dimensions of wasatiyyah leadership towards self and national resilience of the student leaders, in addition to self-resilience being observed as a mediating variable to relationships between wasatiyyah leadership and student leaders’ national resiliency. The approaches used are sectional studies and the instruments in question were Wasatiyyah leadership, developed from various scholars based upon Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradhawi’s 30 Wasatiyyah Principles in 2010, Personal Resilience Questionnaire (PRQ) surveys, ODRs formed by Conner in 1993 and surveys on national resilience developed by Hamidah Ab Rahman et al. in 2011 as well as Fadhilah Ideris in 2012. A total of 305 student leaders from various Malaysian public universities in the peninsular region were involved in this study. The quantitative data was analysed via the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) program. Multivariate tests, including confirmatory statistic factors analysis, Pearson correlation and hierarchical regression were applied in the research. The findings indicate that there is a significant relationship between wasatiyyah leadership to students’ and national resiliency, in terms of the student leaders in Malaysian public universities. Furthermore, the findings indicate that self- resilience to being a full-mediator and half-mediator to relationships between wasatiyyah leadership and student leaders’ national or patriotic resiliency. Conclusively, the study shows that the level of wasatiyyah leadership influences self and national resiliency of student leaders in Malaysian public universities. Additionally, self-resilience is also seen as a key mediator in improving leadership and management skills as a formative developing tool of a nation’s youth patriotic or national resilience. Keywords: Wasatiyyah leadership, Self-resilience, National resilience iii Penghargaan Dengan nama Allah Yang Maha Pemurah Lagi Maha Mengasihani. • PAS Veering Away from Islamic Agenda, Nasharudin Tells Berita Minggu the Malaysian Insider December 18, 2011 by Shazwan Mustafa Kamal
PAS veering away from Islamic agenda, Nasharudin tells Berita Minggu The Malaysian Insider December 18, 2011 By Shazwan Mustafa Kamal KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 18 — As speculation continues to build over his possible departure from PAS, an embattled Nasharudin Mat Isa has broken his silence and accused the party of deviating from its Islamic principles and agenda. In an exclusive interview with the weekend edition of Berita Harian, Berita Minggu, Nasharudin said that the PAS leadership should not be too preoccupied with the party’s political goals while abandoning its Islamic ones. He (picture) lamented that PAS was no longer seen as having a “consistent” Islamic image and that it could not afford to chop and change “terminologies” to suit its political direction. “As an Islamic organisation, PAS has to be consistent with an Islamic face. Do not abandon the party’s principles based on Al-Quran and Hadith over the issue of ‘maqasid’ (goals) and ‘maslahah’ (problems). “Politics is coloured by perception and this has to be dealt with carefully. The general perception right now is that PAS is ‘loose’ in several aspects, which is dangerous,” he said. The Bachok MP, who was PAS deputy president until he was defeated by his successor Mohamad Sabu recently, said that PAS could not afford to become too “flexible” to the point where the rights of Islam and the Malay community are disregarded. He echoed the controversial views of Datuk Dr Hasan Ali, who is under fire for re-igniting talk of a PAS-Umno union. “Our focus should be unity because that is the main necessity.

Katakunci: ketidakakuran sivil, pendemokrasian, Abdullah Badawi, pilihan raya, siber demokrasi. Upon being elected as Prime Minister in 2003, Abdullah Badawi promised to make changes in the political and administrative aspects. However, four years into his leadership, the promise remained unfulfilled and this led to the dissatisfaction among the people. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the emergence of civil disobedience during Abdullah Badawi’s era and its impact upon the election and democratization process.

  • Malaysia 2015 International Religious Freedom Report
MALAYSIA 2015 INTERNATIONAL RELIGIOUS FREEDOM REPORT Executive Summary The constitution declares that “Islam is the religion of the Federation; but other religions may be practiced in peace and harmony.” State and federal governments have the power to “control or restrict the propagation of any religious doctrine or belief among persons professing the religion of Islam.” The government, which regulates Islamic religious affairs, promotes Sunni Islam above all other religious groups. Other forms of Islam are illegal and subject to action by religious authorities. The government maintains a parallel legal system, with certain civil matters for Muslims covered by sharia. The relationship between sharia and civil law remains unresolved in the legal system, although civil courts generally refrain from making judgments contradicting sharia courts when the jurisdictions intersect, in particular with family law cases that involve both Muslims and non- Muslims. The government continued to bar Muslims from converting to another religion and imposed fines, detentions, and canings on those classified under the law as Muslim who contravene sharia codes. Christians continued to face difficulty in using the word “Allah” to denote God. In April the government amended the sedition laws; changes included the criminalization of speech that “promotes ill will, hostility or hatred on the grounds of religion.” Even before the amendment, however, sedition laws had been used against those deemed to be insulting Islam, with one opposition politician sentenced to 16 months in prison for a social media posting. In April the government announced it would support states seeking to implement Islamic penal law (hudud). Prime Minister Najib Razak gave several speeches during the year suggesting Malaysia would not accept “liberal” definitions of human rights that stray from the tenets of Islam.
