The Tigers’ Justin Verlander has amassed a 19-5 record while leading all of baseball in IP, K, wins and ranks third in ERA. The Detroit right-hander is scheduled to take the mound on Saturday, Aug. 27 (4:00 PM ET) as the Tigers take on the Twins. Three more enticing matchups round out FOX Sports’ Saturday slate as the NL Wild Card-leading Braves travel to New York to face the Mets. In St. Louis, Albert Pujols , Lance Berkman and the Cardinals look to close the gap on the Brewers in the NL Central as they meet the Pirates. Also, the Rockies take on the Dodgers in Los Angeles. But if they intend to move him now, the most sensible outcome is a trade – a trade that would include an exchange of talent to the Astros and cash to the Rockies. The deadline for the teams to reach a decision is 1:00 PM ET on Thursday. One source estimates that the chance of Rodriguez going to the Rockies is less than 20 percent. STRUGGLING DODGERS MAY PRODUCE CY YOUNG AND MVP WINNERS – FOXSports.com writer Tracy Ringolsby points out that the Los Angeles Dodgers are a puzzle and the pieces don’t fit. “There is Matt Kemp , enjoying an MVP-type season. He's among the National League leaders in virtually every significant offensive statistic, and he plays center field, a key defensive position. And there is left-hander Clayton Kershaw . He has put together a season that even Roy Halladay has to admire, showing dominance and durability. But then there is the Dodgers team. The once-proud franchise entered Tuesday in last place in the NL West,” writes Ringolsby. “Can the Dodgers become the first bad team with an MVP and a Cy Young Award winner? The Dodgers' record shouldn't work to Kershaw's detriment. The past two American League Cy Young Awards went to pitchers from last-place teams. The MVP is a different animal. The word ‘Valuable’ is in the middle of the title, and the voting members of the Baseball Writers Association of America generally put an emphasis on the value a player has in the success of his team. Nor did he overstep his bounds or act as a capricious holy roller, as many have implied. In this increasingly ugly and infinitely cynical time in college football, he took a stand. Roger sent a clear message that the NFL will no longer be a safe harbor for college football terrorists,” writes Engel. “What else can you call the administrators, athletic directors, coaches and players who throw scandal bombs into the college football programs they profess to love and then bolt just ahead of whatever fallout ensues, leaving a bunch of incoming freshmen and bullied compliance officers to wade through the muck of others? Even with their ace Don Newcombe on the mound, the Dodgers seemed to be doomed from the start, as three Yankee home runs set back Newcombe and the rest of the team in their opening 6-5 loss. Game 2 had the same result, as New York's southpaw Tommy Byrne held Brooklyn to five hits in a 4-2 victory. With the Series heading back to Brooklyn, Johnny Podres was given the start for Game 3. The Dodger lefty stymied the Yankees' offense over the first seven innings by allowing one run on four hits en route to an 8-3 victory. Podres gave the Dodger faithful a hint as to what lay ahead in the series with his complete-game, six-strikeout performance. Game 4 at Ebbets Field turned out to be an all-out slugfest. After falling behind early, 3-1, the Dodgers used the long ball to knot up the series. Future Hall of Famers Roy Campanella and Duke Snider each homered and Gil Hodges collected three of the club’s 14 hits, including a home run in the 8-5 triumph. Snider's third and fourth home runs of the Series provided the support needed for rookie Roger Craig and the Dodgers took Game 5 by a score of 5-3.

Each state of the MDP models the pitcher’s current pitch selection in a Markovian fashion, conditional on the information immediately prior to making the current pitch. This in- cludes the count prior to the previous pitch, his ensuing pitch selec- tion, the batter’s ensuing action and the result of the pitch. The necessary Markovian probabilities can be estimated by the rel- evant observed conditional proportions in MLB pitch-by-pitch game data. These probabilities could be pitcher-specific, using only the data from one pitcher, or general, using the data from a collection of pitchers. Optimal batting strategies against these estimated conditional dis- tributions of pitch selection can be ascertained by Value Iteration. Optimal batting strategies against a pitcher-specific conditional dis- tribution can be contrasted to those calculated from the general con- ditional distributions associated with a collection of pitchers. In this manuscript, a single season of MLB data is used to cal- culate the conditional distributions to find optimal pitcher-specific and general (against a collection of pitchers) batting strategies. These strategies are subsequently evaluated by conditional distributions cal- culated from a different season for the same pitchers.

    MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WEEKLY NOTES FRIDAY, JULY 28, 2017 BLACKMON WORKING TOWARD HISTORIC SEASON On Sunday afternoon against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Coors Field, Colorado Rockies All-Star outfi elder Charlie Blackmon went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and his 24th home run of the season. With the round-tripper, Blackmon recorded his 57th extra-base hit on the season, which include 20 doubles, 13 triples and his aforementioned 24 home runs. Pacing the Majors in triples, Blackmon trails only his teammate, All-Star Nolan Arenado for the most extra-base hits (60) in the Majors. Blackmon is looking to become the fi rst Major League player to log at least 20 doubles, 20 triples and 20 home runs in a single season since Curtis Granderson (38-23-23) and Jimmy Rollins (38-20-30) both accomplished the feat during the 2007 season. Since 1901, there have only been seven 20-20-20 players, including Granderson, Rollins, Hall of Famers George Brett (1979) and Willie Mays (1957), Jeff Heath (1941), Hall of Famer Jim Bottomley (1928) and Frank Schulte, who did so during his MVP-winning 1911 season. Charlie would become the fi rst Rockies player in franchise history to post such a season. If the season were to end today, Blackmon’s extra-base hit line (20-13-24) has only been replicated by 34 diff erent players in MLB history with Rollins’ 2007 season being the most recent. It is the fi rst stat line of its kind in Rockies franchise history. Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig is the only player in history to post such a line in four seasons (1927-28, 30-31).
