Smythe-Wood Newspaper Index – “A” series – mainly Co Tyrone Irish Genealogical Research Society Dr P Smythe-Wood’s Irish Newspaper Index Selected families, mainly from Co Tyrone ‘Series A’ The late Dr Patrick Smythe-Wood presented a large collection of card indexes to the IGRS Library, reflecting his various interests, - the Irish in Canada, Ulster families, various professions etc. These include abstracts from various Irish Newspapers, including the Belfast Newsletter, which are printed below. Abstracts are included for all papers up to 1864, but excluding any entries in the Belfast Newsletter prior to 1801, as they are fully available online. Dr Smythe-Wood often found entries in several newspapers for the one event, & these will be shown as one entry below. Entries dealing with RIC Officers, Customs & Excise Officers, Coastguards, Prison Officers, & Irish families in Canada will be dealt with in separate files, although a small cache of Canadian entries is included here, being families closely associated with Co Tyrone. In most cases, Dr Smythe-Wood has recorded the exact entry, but in some, marked thus *, the entries were adjusted into a database, so should be treated with more caution. There are further large card indexes of Miscellaneous notes on families which are not at present being digitised, but which often deal with the same families treated below. • A Society in Transition: the Protestant Community in Tyrone 1836-42 Daragh Emmett Curran Thesis for the Degree of Ph.D Departmen
A SOCIETY IN TRANSITION: THE PROTESTANT COMMUNITY IN TYRONE 1836-42 DARAGH EMMETT CURRAN THESIS FOR THE DEGREE OF PH.D DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF IRELAND MAYNOOTH SUPERVISOR OF RESEARCH: PROFESSOR RAYMOND GILLESPIE SEPTEMBER, 2010 A society in transition: The Protestant community of County Tyrone 1836-42. Daragh Emmett Curran This thesis deals with the transition that was taking place in Protestant society in the immediate pre-famine period in County Tyrone. It explores how this community, at all social levels, reacted to the changes that were occurring and which were considered detrimental to its position of dominance in society. These changes had the potential to dramatically affect the traditional paternalistic relationship that bound the lower classes to their social betters and this study examines how this relationship survived through economic recession, changes in law and order, increasing concessions being granted to Catholics, lessening government support for the Protestant Church, and the suppression of the dominant Protestant association of the time- the Orange Order. The Order played an integral part in the lives of many Protestants and was an organization that transcended the class divide. Because of this, it becomes the pivot around which this work revolves as the Order, with its wide-stretching network, helped maintain the patriarchal relationship that bound the classes together. It is also a useful tool through which to examine attitudes towards law and order within the Protestant community as changes within this area, especially within the magistracy, affected the upper classes, the very people that the lower classes looked to for guidance.

The increase in the cost of living and the increased prices which the farmers was getting for his produce had been mainly instrumental in bringing about increased wages. The wages however are still very low. The usual daily wage current in 1913 were for men 2s to 3s 6d, for women 1s 6d to 3s. RESERVES CALLED UP IMMEDIATELY At the start of WW1 58,000 Irishmen were already enlisted in the British Regular Army or Navy – 21,000 serving regular soldiers, 18,000 reservists, 12,000 in the Special Reserve, 5,000 Naval ratings and 2,000 officers.

Tyrone Brigade, 1917-1919; 0/C. Benburb company, 1920-1921. Subject. Reorganisation of Irish Volunteers, 1917, and national activities, Co. Tyrone, 1917-24. Living conditions on Prison Ship "Argenta". Conditions, if any, Stipulated by Witness. Nil File No. S.589 Form B.S.M.2 STATEMENT of Mr. Jack Shields, Benburb, County Tyrone. After the Easter Week Rising in 1916 the pre-1916 organisation of the Volunteers lapsed to a great extent. Benburb Company, however, kept together and met occasionally. There was, however, no official organisa- tion in existence, Benburb Company being sort of. isolated. The I.R.B. organisation was in practically the same condition. A number of men in the Benburb circ1e met together and discussed matters of importance on these occasions. About Easter 1917 I was made aware of a reorganisation meeting to be held in Dublin. I attended this meeting which was held in Fleming's Hotel, Gardiner Street. Cathal Brugha was in the chair at this meeting, and three northern representatives were present - Liam Gaynor, Joe O'Doherty and myself. This meeting was a sort of reorganisation meeting or a convention of representatives from different parts of the country. The purpose of it was to have a general reorganisation of the Volunteers. I cannot now remember the names of any of the other delegates who attended this meeting. I don't think, looking back at it, that I knew many there.
