PRILIS Root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.) are widespread and destructive pests of crop plants in Cyprus. Georghiou (1957) reported Meloidogyne javanica, M. arenaria and an unidentified species while Philis and Siddiqi (1976) added M. incognita to the list. Netscher (1978) reported that in subtropical countries the length of juveniles and the configuration of the perineal pattern do not adequately serve in identifying Meloidogyne while the position of the excretory pore of the adult female seemed to be useful for distinguishing between M. javanica and M. incognita. Taylor and Sasser (1978) used several kinds of plants for separating species and races of Meloidogyne by host response while Eisenback et al. (1981) established several morpho­ logical features for distinguishing the most common species of root-knot nematodes. The object of the present study was to use the response of Sasser's differential hosts for local Meloidogyne populations and to determine morphological features that might contribute to their identification. The work is part of the International Meloidogyne Project (IMP). Materials and Methods Thirty nine root and soil samples were collected from naturally infested fields from 22 locations in Cyprus. ESTABLISHMENTS 1. Farmed game meat The transposition of the legislation is proceeding with a deadline for adoption placed by the end of June 2002. There is one slaughterhouse for slaughter of ostriches. It complies fully with the directive 91/495/EEC. The annual production of ostrich meat is about 60 tons. 2. Rabbit meat and small farm game meat. The transposition of the legislation is proceeding with a deadline for adoption by the end of June 2002 There is one slaughterhouse for slaughtering of quails. We confirm that it will comply with the directive 91/495/EEC by August of 2002. The annual production of quail meat is 22,5 tons. The rabbit meat production is 250 tons per year.     Operation of rapid antigen testing units in remote areas In view of today’s final decision of the Council of Ministers for the re-opening of Gymnasiums, with the physical presence of students on Friday, 2nd April, it is reminded that students will have to undergo a rapid antigen test before returning to their schools. The students can undergo a rapid test offered free of charge through the program by the Ministry of Health, or at an approved private clinical laboratory at their own expense.     CYPRUS 2017 INTERNATIONAL RELIGIOUS FREEDOM REPORT Since 1974, the southern part of Cyprus has been under the authority of the Government of the Republic of Cyprus, while the northern part, administered by Turkish Cypriots, proclaimed itself the “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus” (“TRNC”) in 1983. The United States does not recognize the “TRNC,” nor does any country other than Turkey. A substantial number of Turkish troops remain on the island. A buffer zone, or “green line,” patrolled by the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), separates the two parts. REPUBLIC OF CYPRUS Executive Summary The constitution prohibits religious discrimination and protects the freedom to worship, teach, and practice one’s religion. It grants the Greek Orthodox Church of Cyprus the exclusive right to regulate and administer its internal affairs and recognizes the Vakf, an Islamic institution that manages land Muslims have donated as an endowment for charitable purposes as well as sites of worship. The government granted Turkish Cypriots access to religious sites in the area it controls, including for visits by approximately 2,650 Turkish Cypriots and foreign nationals to Hala Sultan Tekke Mosque on three occasions. Seven of the eight functioning mosques, with the exception of Hala Sultan Tekke, in the government- controlled area were open for all five daily prayers, and six had the necessary facilities for ablutions. Despite long-standing requests, the government did not grant permission to the Muslim community to make improvements at mosques. A representative of the Buddhist community reported authorities raised obstacles to the operation of a temple in a village outside of Nicosia and forced the community to relocate the temple.

    An Account of the Development of Social Insurance for Cyprus, 1878-2004; with particular reference to Older People Gregory Neocleous PhD University of York Social Policy and Social Work September 2014 ABSTRACT This thesis explores and analyses the evolution of social insurance in Cyprus from 1878-2004 and those factors that led to its development. In order to provide a comprehensive view the study begins with the arrival of the British in Cyprus in 1878 after 300 years of Ottoman occupation. This study includes an analysis of the labour movement which spearheaded the campaign for the introduction of social insurance. Both the labour movement and the British colonists are considered as significant players in the story of introducing social insurance in Cyprus. The labour movement acted as a source of pressure in its campaign for improved social welfare whilst the British created as many obstacles as possible against such a development. In addition, the study illustrates the social conditions of the general population but with particular emphasis on the older population, the group most affected by a lack of social insurance. This emphasis includes a detailed study and analysis of the role of elderly people and their movement in their campaign for improved pensions. The thesis is divided into five chronological periods with each having its own significance in the evolution of social insurance. The analysis in each chronological period illustrates the events and the outcomes of its introduction and the turbulent and dramatic course of its evolution as well as its significance in supporting workers and pensioners. The study is based on a documentary research method utilising various primary and secondary sources as well as oral history interviews with eight key persons in the area of social insurance, the labour movement and the older people‟s movement.
