A fun night had by all, and a very worthy fundraiser to support your children’s needs at JPC. STUDY BREAK: YEARS 11-13 The next two weeks are critical for students in Years 11-13. God bless Patrick Walsh Principal

ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST TO BE STAGED IN ROTORUA! The JPC Drama Department is embarking on its most challenging project to date in presenting a limited run of the iconic play One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest the controversial dramatic comedy written by Ken Kesey in 1962. The play, set in an Oregon psychiatric hospital, has serious confronting themes of institutional processes and the workings of the human mind. Adapted by Dale Wasserman into a Broadway sell-out play in 1963 and then a blockbuster Hollywood film that went on to be nominated for nine Oscars – ultimately winning a record five Oscars and a Tony Award for Outstanding Play in 1975.

Whilst being truthful to the text, I have concentrated on the theme of manipulation and abuse of power which transfers to today’s world so well. The 2018 JPC Senior Drama class is an exceptionally talented group of actors and it is because of their talent that this hugely challenging and provocative play was selected to showcase their talents.

I am excited about presenting this production to our community and only two performances, please get your tickets early as this production will be a ‘sell out’. Performances are Friday 3rd August 7.30 pm and Saturday 4th August a matinee at 2.00pm. Tickets available from the Accounts Office at the college.

Please note the play being true to the text contains adult themes and is only suitable for students 13 years and above. Gabrielle Thurston HoD Drama

With three home games last weekend at JPC, there was an air of excitement as two JPC of the games were top of the table clashes.

The U15’s kicked off when the frost was heavy on the ground and the ice was still melting. Up against Trident in a top of the table clash, JPC learnt that you are only 2018 as good as your last game. Trident out passioned from the start. Trident hit their straps and scored a quick try. From then on the JPC team were chasing the game.

Some good periods of play during the game gave JPC some hope however Trident did not take their foot off the throat and were eventual winners 43 – 7. The team will go and lick their wounds, muscle up and look forward to this week’s encounter. Not liking the feeling of losing they will be a better team for it!!!

JPC/Rep/Lakes XV went into this game with only one competition game behind them. This was the first of a double header against Te Puke. The JPC/Rep/Lakes XV lacked combinations however done well to be in front 19 – 14 at half time. They had scored early and lead 14 nil before they let Te Puke back into the game to level the scores at 14 all. A late try in the half gave the JPC/Rep/Lakes team the lead at half time.

The second half was all JPC/Rep/Lakes and they pressed on with the game plan and superior fitness lead to a 40 – 19 win. A great lead into the Te Kani shield match. Strong games from Isaac ‘King’ Hanlen, Mace Pomare (with two tries) and Tangaroa with bustling runs up the middle.

JPC 1st XV were playing the other unbeaten team, Te Puke, in their 1st Division encounter. Up for grabs was the Te Kani Shield, the Ranfurly Shield of BOP Secondary School Rugby. The game started with all the boys from the 1st, JPC/Rep/ Lakes XV and some of the U15’s performing a stirring haka to challenge the holders of the TK Shield. An early try from Te Puke and with all the commotion you would have thought they had won the game already. Little did they know that these boys had been wanting this occasion for the last 4 years!. Bouncing back the JPC team scored a try to take the lead 7 – 5 The flood gates then opened with another try and then the trusty boot of Russell Macken put all the score board pressure back onto Te Puke. A 45m penalty certainly looked to dim the Te Puke spirits. Going into the halftime at 20 – 5 up, the game was not over by any means. Stern words at half time for both teams and the 2nd half was going to be a competitive affair. Te Puke had the run of the game however great defence from JPC held them out. A late flurry from JPC saw them end with a try but the mahi had been done and the treat was theirs for the taking. Winning 33 – 12 and taking the Te Kani Shield for the first time ever. This was a goal for the team. The team played well and to pick stand outs would be hard. Industrious performances from the loose trio of Patrick Humphrey, Connor Humphries and Ethan Graham set a great foundation for the team to build from. We now need to win every game to continue to hold the shield.

This weekend’s games are:

U15’s vs Tauranga Gold @ JPC 10.30am JPC/Rep/Lakes XV vs Bethlehem @ Bethlehem Midday ST 1 XV vs Trident @ Trident Midday

Saturday 28th July 2018 3 or 6 Hour Foot or MTB Rogaine Whakarewarewa Forest, Rotorua

The Great Forest Rogaine is a 3 or 6 hour, foot or mountain bike team rogaine open to all ages and abilities. The New Zealand Secondary School Rogaine Champs will be run alongside this event in 2018 with Juniors competing in the 3 hour Foot event and Seniors competing in the 6 hour Foot event. Mountain bike categories are not available for the NZSS Rogaine Champs.

What is a rogaine? Rogaining is a team sport based on navigating to checkpoints using a map.

Competitors are given a map with all the checkpoints on it and the checkpoints are worth different values. Competitors have a defined amount of time to visit as many of the checkpoints as possible. Teams plot their own route around the map, choosing how many checkpoints to visit and in which order.

During an event each team finds their way round their selected course, adjusting their plans as appropriate. The team with the highest score within the time limit wins. In the event of teams with the same total score, the fastest of these top teams wins.

A Rogaine is a test of strategic route choice, map reading skills, physical fitness and team work.

Rogaines by their nature cater for all levels of ability, as teams can choose a route and checkpoints appropriate for their skills and fitness. It's also a great family sport for this reason.

For further information on Rogaines you can check out the Orienteering NZ website (http://www.orienteering.org.nz/about-orienteering/rogaining/) and also the New Zealand Rogaining Association website (www.rogaine.org.nz).

The event will take place through the Whakarewarewa Forest area. You won't know where exactly until you receive the map on the day! Whakarewarewa Forest has hundreds of the world's best mountain bike and walking tracks! You're guaranteed to go somewhere new!

Registration, the briefing, start, finish, pizza and prizegiving will all take place at a Whakarewarewa School, Sala Street Rotorua.

EVENTS Foot 3 Hour (including Junior Year 9 and 10 NZSS Rogaine Champs) Foot 6 Hour (including Senior Year 11 – 13 NZSS Rogaine Champs) If you interested in competing in this event please see Mr Faulkner for more details.
