Album Review of the Velvet Underground & Nico
Album Review of The Velvet Underground & Nico – Artifacts Journal - University of Mi... Page 1 of 4 University of Missouri A Journal of Undergraduate Writing Album Review of The Velvet Underground & Nico Sam Jennings Sam Jennings started attending the University of Missouri in 2012 and is currently pursuing a bachelor of music performance in guitar. He writes in his spare time and fronts a local Columbia rock band, “The Rollups”. He is thankful to Dr. Michael J. Budds for encouraging him and his submission to this journal. He wrote this paper as one part of a multi-paper project in Historical Studies in Jazz and Popular Music, taught by Dr. Michael J. Budds. They were expected to choose a musician (before 1970) and review a full-length LP by that artist; he felt particularly inclined to make the case for a set of truly bizarre, radical artists who have been historically misunderstood and misaligned. When The Velvet Underground & Nico was released in March of 1967, it was to a public that hardly cared and a critical establishment that could not make heads or tails of it. Its sales were dismal, due in part to legal troubles, and MGM’s bungled attempts at promoting the record. The Velvet Underground’s seedy, druggy music defiantly reflected an urban attitude even closer to the beatniks than Bob Dylan and even more devoted to rock n’ roll primitivism than The Rolling Stones or The Who. Nevertheless, the recording had no place in a landscape soon to be dominated by San Francisco psychedelics and high- concept British pop. -

John Cale Is Coming to Basel: Vis-À-Vis with Rock Music Legends Thanks to the Partnership Between the Fondation Beyeler and Bayer
Media release, 31st August 2016 John Cale is coming to Basel: Vis-à-vis with rock music legends thanks to the partnership between the Fondation Beyeler and Bayer John Cale, charismatic founding member of the unforgettable avant-garde band The Velvet Underground that was associated with Andy Warhol, extraordinary solo musician and music producer, is performing an exclusive concert with his trio at the Fondation Beyeler on October 22 at 6pm. Exceptional art experiences are a tradition at the Fondation Beyeler. Why does fine art exert such a powerful fascination? Why are museums so popular? Doubtless because they permit a direct personal relationship to art, face to face and with no filter. When we visit a museum, we totally possess the artworks we see for a few moments in time; we immerse ourselves in them and they arouse emotions and questions in us, generating lively dialogs spanning different centuries and cultures. The close, intimate, sometimes demanding and always exciting experiencing of art in a museum has inspired the Fondation Beyeler and Bayer to hold a lose series of concerts in which a legendary musician can be experienced close up, just as artworks are. Last year Patti Smith and her band performed an acoustic set at the Fondation Beyeler and this year it is the turn of the rock legend John Cale. After studying at Goldsmiths College in London, the unconventional, headstrong Welshman was awarded a Leonard Bernstein scholarship thanks to the intervention of Aaron Copland, the contemporary US composer, and worked with major figures on the American avant-garde scene such as La Monte Young and John Cage. -

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Joshua Machat 212.387.3410 / [email protected] THE VELVET UNDERGROUND NEW YORK ART Edited by Johan Kugelberg Introduction by Lou Reed and Maureen Tucker Preface by Vaclav Havel with text contributions by Doug Yule, Sterling Morrison, John Wilcock, and Jon Savage Timeline by Salvatore Mercuri THE VELVET UNDERGROUND: NEW YORK ART (November 2009) is the first monograph devoted to a Rock and Roll band. The Velvet Underground were among the New York avant-garde who closed the gap between the popular arts and the fine art movement of the 20th century. With Andy Warhol at the helm, the band contextualized the hi-art/low-art medium of the dysphoric Sixties with a unique mixture of sound experimentation, performance art, and pop sensibility. With an astonishing assembly of rare objects and artworks and the first book of its scale to document the formative years of the band, The Velvet Underground: New York Art, is not only a testament to one of the greatest New York City bands, but also a visual document of how music can influence the history of fine art and vice versa. From never-before-seen photographs of the band’s first live show in New York to Andy Warhol’s cover and poster designs, Lou Reed’s and John Cale’s handwritten music and lyrics, underground press clippings and controversial reviews, flyers, handbills, and posters, the materials comprise a uniquely comprehensive survey of the first rock group ever to transcend the genre and embrace underground popular culture. -
