There are various techniques that can be used to paint. On Saturday, May 13, par- ticipants discovered Painting with Golf Balls. Library Technician Sandra Fernandez and Librarian Michelle Meades inspired participants by sharing the story, I Ain't Gonna Paint No More!. First, children were provided with a clean paint brush and pretended to paint their different body parts, as dictated by the char- acters in the story. Then, each child placed their own "canvas" in a plastic baby pool. When the paint and golf balls were added, participants began to roll them around creating amazing Jackson Pollack-like master pieces. All the kids were amazed at their creations. One mom said she couldn't wait to "put this on my fridge!"

Along with being lots of fun, this activity helped children hone on concentration and coordination skills.

May City Of Anaheim 2017 Ponderosa Library Report

Achieves were brought to the library to participate in various programs. Thank you to the Anaheim Achieves for bringing the children to enjoy the educational, fun, and entertaining programs that library offers.

Thank you to Anaheim Union School District’s Adult Transition Students for their year long commitment to volunteering at the Haskett Library. These students show up each week to help sort the bookdrop, put away paperback picture books, and clean tabletops throughout the library.

Thanks also to the Independent Living Skills Class from Cypress College, who come on a monthly basis to help out at the Haskett Library. In addition to their volunteer tasks, participants get to check out books too!

12 Central Board Report May 2017 Dia

On April 28, Central's Children's Room threw a party for Dia, or El Dia de los Ninos, El Dia de los Libros (Day of the Child, Day of the Book), an annual event celebrating kids and reading. This year, more than 200 people came to watch a hilarious clown performance, win raffle prizes, pose for pictures with famous literary characters, and play games. Think Together was also at Dia giving away a free book to every child. Mommies and Muffins

On Thursday, May 9, Miss Angel led the annual Mommies & Muffins program. Moms and their kids got together at the library to listen to stories, sing songs, and dance. Kids crafted crowns for themselves and their queenly moms, families took lovely photos together in a beautiful springtime frame, and, of course, everyone enjoyed some truly delicious muffins!

National Library Week

In celebration of National Library Week, families were encouraged to check out 3 or more books and drop their receipts in our raffle box. We had over 100 participants for this raffle, and Rebekah and Brandy were the lucky winners of book goodie bags!

Thank you to the Anaheim Public Library Friends and the AMEA for their generous donations to this program. Teens Making It!

On Thursday, May 11, Central's teens tried their hand as amateur perfumers. Using essential oils, they created their own aromatic sprays in a variety of unique scents. Some kept their smells to themselves, and others gave them to mom to help her smell beautiful for Mother's Day. Thank you to the Friends of the Anaheim Public Library for their generous support of this program. Sew Sick! Sew Sick introduces teens to basic hand and machine sewing skills. During the 4- week program, teens make 4 projects, each of which requires more skill to complete. Our second session of Sew Sick just ended on May 20, with projects including pillowcases, tote bags, circle skirts, and hand-sewn keychains. Participants have expressed that the class is very fun and valuable since their school does not offer a home economics class, and they love creating usable and wearable art that they get to keep! The program has been such a success that a third, more advanced session is forming to accommodate and further guide those who have been through either of the first two beginner sessions of Sew Sick! Thank you to PT Library Technician Brianna Meli for her sharing her awesome sewing skills with teens through this program!

Thank you to the Anaheim Arts Council for their generous support of this program. Citizenship Classes

Citizenship Classes started with a bang on April 27th with 35 students. This marked our sixth year collaborating with OCCORD (Orange County Communities Organized for the Responsible Development). This is an intensive 10-week series in which students will learn fundamental English with a strong dose of U.S. history. At the end of the series, students will be able to apply for citizenship. In October, there will be additional citizenship clinics for those who want assistance with the paperwork and legal inquiries. Monster Squad

On Friday, May 19, the Monster Squad had its fourth meeting and dove into the world of demons. Attendees were treated to clips from “The Exorcist”, “Paranormal Activity”, and “Insidious”. An interesting discussion arose afterwards that covered topics such as: demons in literature and how they are sometimes used to symbolize alcoholism or addiction, demons in other parts of the world like the ogre-like Oni in Japanese mythology or the vengeful Ifrit in Muslim mythology, and demons in popular culture such as Dante the Demon Hunter from the “Devil May Cry” video game series. “The Exorcist” film was also discussed at length and it was very interesting to hear some attendees recall how the film incited mass panic and hysteria when it was released. Lucky raffle winners even got to take home some spooky swag! On Saturday, April 29th, the Bookmobile Staff joined the celebration of Dia de los Niños hosted by the Miraloma Park Family Resource Center. Dia de los Niños, also known as the Day of the Child, celebrates children. 250 patrons both young and old enjoyed a storytime, meeting book characters, learning about their neighborhood Bookmobile stop and Library resources, and se- lecting a free book. The books for this event were generously provided by the Friends of the Ana- heim Public Library. A special thank you to our storytellers Rocio, Karla, and Katrina for sharing the joy of stories with the children of the Miraloma neighborhood.

On Saturday, May 20th, Bookmobile staff attended the Children’s Festival held at Pearson Park. This year 517 people stopped by to make twirly snakes and learn about the Library’s multitude of offerings. A special thank you to Wendy, Vanessa, and Luis for braving the hot temperatures and representing the Library at this event. Anaheim Public Library Bookmobile in partnership with the Department of Public Works hosted an Earth Day Celebration in the Balsam/East Neighborhood and the City’s annual Arbor Day Celebration at Manzanita Park. These events were well attend with neighborhood residents and children from the Boys and Girls Club of Anaheim. Participants enjoyed helping plant some of the 25 new trees in the Balsam/East Neighborhood and 6 new Pink Trumpet trees at Manzanita Park. In addition to planting trees at the Arbor Day Celebration, children from the Boys and Girls Club along with area residents were able to visit West Coast Arborist, Public Works, Tree Power, the Bookmobile, and a Library booth to collect fun giveaways, beautify their park, plant their own windowsill garden, hear a reading of the Lorax by Community Services Director Brent Dennis, win prizes, and learn information about City and community programs. Bookmobile is the only City resource serving the Balsam/East Neighborhood. As a result of Bookmobile Librarian Katrina Ford and her initiating the partnership with the City’s Public Works Department the Balsam/East neighborhood now has new trees!!! A special thank you to Chloe for taking photos at both of these events, Community Services Director Brent Dennis for reading the Lorax, Rocio, Bri and Wendy for manning the Bookmobile, and Waldo Rangel and his wonderful staff from Public Works in making these events a success. On Saturday, May 13th, the Bookmobile visited the 21st annual WAND BBQ at Twila Reid Park. This year 355 children and adults visited the Bookmobile! Children of all ages enjoyed creating twirly snakes, discovering the Library’s wide array of digital resources, reading together, checking out books and DVDs, and exploring the interior of the Bookmobile. A special thank you to the Luis for run- ning the craft table and Bri for manning Bookmobile’s interior and signing people up for Library Cards! Staff look forward to celebrating with WAND next year.

Our long time vendor from Rainbow Books, Marty Lebowitz, brought samples of his new Spanish books for Bookmobile and Central staff to review for purchase. He surprised us by donating 59 juvenile, teen, and adult Spanish titles from his older sample titles. We were very grateful for the donation and look forward to the new Spanish titles we will be purchasing.

Central and Bookmobile staff select new books to purchase for the collection with Marty from Rainbow Books. OPERATION SERVICES PROGRESS REPORT

May 2017

Collections Development Support Collection Support has been working with Public Services staff to highlight local authors. A recent romance author event brought 15 local authors to the Central library and resulted in several dozen books being donated to the collection. In addition to normal processing, these books receive a “LOCAL AUTHOR” label covered with a round orange highlight label. Look for them on the shelves at Central.

Collection support regularly compiles and analyzes the number of requests placed on titles in the collection to ensure that we have enough copies of popular titles to fill requests quickly. Here are the 5 titles that currently have the most requests:

32 requests 28 requests 27 requests

26 requests 25 requests (Large Print ed.)

Automation: In May, the City introduced a new online Balancing Act Tool that allows residents to cast a vote on their funding priorities. Don provided training to the Library Foundation and two Friends groups and added desktop icons for this webpage to the public lab and catalog computers at all Library locations.

The Automation Team modified the patron Print Release Terminals to make them easier to use. Tom worked with Trevor Yates of West Coast Copy to make the “Print” button larger and streamlined the process by eliminating an intermediate step that sometimes caused confusion for patrons. Don changed the timeout for all locations to 99 seconds, allowing more time for patrons to locate funds and complete their printing transactions.

The Team worked on other immediate and ongoing projects. Henry continued installation of the new Ocularis security camera software systemwide, and Don worked with Joe Purtell to give an Ocularis training session to Library Leads. Don replaced aging computers for Euclid and Bookmobile staff – the new equipment will facilitate staff efforts to promote the Library using social media tools and graphic design and video software. Henry worked with DXC to roll out Office 2016 software for Library staff with City Connect PCs.

The Library system will be exploring the possibility of changing the Integrated Library System. The City put out a Request for Proposal that the Library Division created for the requirements of a new system. The Horizon system was installed in 2002 and updated many times over the years. As software development has progressed significantly since 2002, newer library staff view Horizon as limited in capability. The library division is looking for the best product to serve the public. The proposed timeline is as follows.

Activity Date Release of Request for Proposal May 1, 2017 Vendor Questions Final Submittal May 17, 2017 Vendor Questions – Answers Returned and Posted May 26, 2017 Proposals Due June 9, 2017 Selection of Finalists July 7, 2017 Software Demos July 17-21, 2017 City Selection Process July 23-August 31, 2017 Contract Negotiations September 1-29, 2017 Award Contract October 17, 2017 Implementation Start Date November 2017
