Timothy O'Sullivan (1840-1882) worked on the Wheeler Survey after having gaining some fame and notoriety as a photographer during the Civil War. O'Sullivan's work done during this time was later used as a way of persuading Congress to fund military instead of civilian expeditions.

Striking Utah Parks Image

4- [Utah Parks Company]. Navajo Indian. [Omaha, NE]: [Union Pacific Rail Road]. Real photo postcard [9 cm x 14 cm] Unused back with a Union Pacific shield and 'Utah Parks Company' vertically, dividing the back. Fine.

Nice image with strong contrasts, that was produced to promote trips from the Utah Parks Company, which was a subsidiary of U.P., that ran guided loop tours of the parks and monuments of southern Utah and northern Arizona.

Good contrasts. Contemporary manuscript notation on the reverse: 'Santa Fe' NM Jan 1885'

Nice image of Navajo Chief, Manuelito [Hastiin Chʼil Haajiní] (1818-1893).

Nice image of Brigham Young's residences with two men sitting on a horse drawn wagon in the foreground and a group of children on the sidewalk in front of the Lion House.

Fort Douglas by C.W. Carter

9- Carter, Charles W. Fort Douglas 1872. Salt Lake City: C.W Carter, 1872. Carte de visite. Albumen [6.5 cm 10] photograph on a plain white mount [11.5 cm x 14 cm] Hand-stamped, C.W. Carter ink backstamp. Near fine. Manuscript description in pencil at the foot of the mount beneath the image. Another manuscript identification in ink on the reverse: 'Fort Douglas, Utah.'

Charles W. Carter image of a soldier standing next to a cannon, with two additional cannons behind him, and beyond that, some of the building of Fort Douglas. One would have to assume that the manuscript notations were placed sometime after the image was produced, as Fort Douglas was Camp Douglas until 1878. Carter CDV's are surprisingly uncommon.

Nice bird's-eye view of the Idaho panhandle town of Wallace, which was the center of the Coeur d'Alene silver-mining district, which produced more silver than any other mining district in the United State. This image show Wallace before the 1910 fire that destroyed a third of the buildings shown. T.N. Barnard (1861-1916) later served as mayor of the town of Wallace.

Nice bird's-eye view of the Idaho panhandle town of Wallace, which is located in the Coeur d'Alene silver- mining district. Today, the small town of Wardner is near the Silver Mountain Ski Resort, with the gondola passing over town.

Small panorama albumen photograph [15.5 cm x 9 cm] on a yellow Haynes (stereoview) mount [18 cm x 10 cm] with Haynes 'Northern Pacific Views.' Very good. Age toning to mount and image with a scuff to the backstamp that effects the text. Extremities show some rubbing.

Rare image of a Birdseye of Fargo drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler (1842-1922) The perspective is from the northeast looking southwest, with the tracks running through the city to the west. The circle on the left side is Island Park. Photographed by F.J. Haynes (1853-1921) who was one of the most prolific of the West’s early photographers.
