Thank you for your kindness, support and your unwavering belief in Magic Valley’s youth. Because of your contributions in 2017, we’ve impacted more lives, dreamed bigger dreams, fed more children and inspired more laughter and smiles. I am pleased to share the 2017 Boys & Girls Clubs of Magic Valley annual report with you. The purpose of this publication is to acknowledge the many wonderful people and organizations who make great experiences possible for our Club kids. Together we have CHANGED LIVES. As an organization, we make a promise to our kids that we’ll be there every step of the way, from kindergarten through graduation. We believe every child deserves every opportunity to succeed, despite their circumstances. Our family of volunteers, board members, and staff work tirelessly to create a positive place where great futures begin. The CLUB EXPERIENCE we provide could not happen without the support and generosity of individuals, corporations and organizations in our community. It is our commitment to you that these investments are used efficiently and effectively to meet the true needs of our community and kids in a manner that is sustainable for future generations. On behalf of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Magic Valley, thank you for your support and dedication. Sincerely,

Lindsey Westburg Gregg Middlekauff Executive Director OUR MISSION: To enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring and responsible citizens.

Jordyn, a senior at Twin Falls High School, started attending the Club as a shy six-year-old girl. She remembers the sounds throughout the Club, the dodge ball game in the gym, freeze dance in the games room, and so many new and unfamiliar faces. She was fearful that her shy personality would be exposed. Those feelings soon faded away when she was welcomed by staff Bri. The Club soon became her second home.

Jordyn attended the Club until she was nine-years-old and then returned at fourteen. When she came back, she felt lost as a person. Her friends wanted her to be somebody she wasn't and her family wanted her to play sports. She was being pulled in a million different directions with no sense of who she was.

When she applied to work as a Jr. Staff, Jordyn was quickly reminded of where she was meant to be. The Club gave her purpose and taught her she could be whoever she wanted to be. She gained confidence in who she is and learned to love others who aren’t exactly like her.

Jordyn has found passion in being a member of Keystone Club, planning #WeOwnFridays and organizing her local SMART Girls conference. These opportunities have helped her engage in A special thank you to the Uhlig Foundation for their generous support of our Youth of the Year her community. Jordyn plans to attend the Program! “I continue to be impressed with the organization and planning for age-appropriate activities and methods of relating to children. I believe this provides for the growth of present and future responsible citizens. The emotional and social development takes a high priority in their programming, as well as respecting individual interests and values.” —Connie Jones, Grandparent WHO WE ARE The Boys & Girls Clubs of Magic Valley served 3,000 youth in 2017 at our Twin Falls & Buhl locations. The Club takes pride in the opportunities we offer our teens! We realize our members have individual needs based on their age. During the school year, the most dangerous time for youth is between 3 and 6pm, Monday through Friday. These are the hours when they are most likely to be a victim or instigator of a crime. It is the time when they could be experimenting with drugs or engaging in risky behavior. The reason is simple: many parents work and a lot of teens have no structured place to go during non-school hours. We provide a variety of opportunities, responsibilities, and education for our members ages 13-18. Some of the FREE activities our teens get to participate in during the school year as well as summer include:  Life Skills  Career Exploration  Disc Golf  Weekly Teen Nights  Community Service  Kahn Coding  Free Meals  Fishing  Robotics  College Readiness  DIY Projects  Swimming  Leadership Training  Photography  Geocaching  Healthy Lifestyles  Swimming  Athletics  Financial Literacy  Gardening  The Arts

The 3rd annual SMART Girls Conference was held in November. The conference was designed for young ladies ages 11-18 and focused on empowering them to be their best selves. All of the girls were encouraged to bring their mom, guardian, aunt, grandma, or friend! The half-day conference had over 80 ladies in attendance. Our keynote speaker, Monique Middlekauff, started off the day leaving everyone feeling confident and empowered with her incredible speech. We had six different breakout sessions led by some amazing presenters: Mollie Lively, Buhl High School Counselor, presented on the importance of cyber-safety; Val Stotts, Safehouse Director, presented on Healthy Relationships; Cassidy Littleton, Pacific Youth of The Year, presented on the importance of being to true yourself; Shawnee Kyle, RN/Community Relations Rep. for McDonald’s of South Central Idaho, presented on Self-Image; Gail Schull, CSI Director of Admissions presented on College Readiness; and Jake Brasil filled in for Makenzie Ellsworth, Nutrition Education Specialist, to do a healthy cooking demonstration. We also had a whole-group Zumba session that was a ton of fun! Everyone that attended the conference received a free bag filled with goodies, and a raffle ticket to win some fun door prizes.

Dear Reader, Let me tell you about my journey as the Pacific Region Youth of the Year. Youth of the Year is a competitive scholarship and recognition program open to any high-school-age Boys & Girls Club member. I was blessed to have had a ten-year membership at the Club. This membership turned into far more than I ever could’ve imagined. I am proud to have represented the Boys & Girls Clubs of Magic Valley in Washington D.C. as our local, state, and pacific regional winner. Speaking of the National level, can we just take a second to appreciate that six teens/young adults from all over the country get the chance to meet up in Washington D.C. and represent the four million club kids across America that will someday follow in our footsteps? It was such an honor. I mean, the last few years have been an honor either way, but when I get to meet with senators and representatives in America’s capitol building, it really puts it into perspective that this program produces leaders that are literally one in a million. I did a lot in D.C. I did all of the touristy stuff of course, but I also spoke with many influential leaders from every industry imaginable. I met celebrities like Kelly Rowland and Nick Cannon and Katy Perry. Don’t get me wrong, all of that is amazing to experience – but the most powerful part of my entire journey is also the simplest goal of the Youth of the Year program, and that is to share your story. I’ve now spoken to tens of thousands of people through YOY opportunities, and without fail, the most meaningful part for myself and my audience has been the stories shared. No matter who I meet, or where I go, or how I end up, I’ve learned that allowing myself to open up and share my life has been the most powerful exchange possible. Basically, it’s A LOT of hard work that goes into being a part of this program. But, it’s SO VERY worth it. Let me put it this way: I am going to a private college, and after four years, I will come out on the other side debt-free. Is that not impressive or what? Even without the financial benefit, I would’ve participated in this program a million times over simply for the growth it promotes in youth across America. Through all of the opportunities you’re given (to speak to thousands of people, travel all over the country, meet/network with people across all industries, meet celebrities, and gain a massive Club family that literally never stops growing), there’s no way not to love this program. I will forever encourage teens to take part in this competition. It WILL change your life if you take it seriously. I dove headfirst into the Youth of the Year, and it radically impacted my past, present, and future. Forever Grateful, Cassidy L.

“Don’t get me wrong, all of that is amazing to experience – but the most powerful part of my entire journey is also the simplest goal of the Youth of the Year program, and that is to share your story.”

In March of 2017, the Club received a $50,000 grant from Lowe’s to build a covered patio structure and fencing to provide adequate and safe outdoor space where our members will be protected from weather elements while engaged in outdoor programming and eating meals in a safe environment. The grant is part of Renovation Across the Nation; a program now in its second year, which provides one Club in all 50 states with a grant and volunteer support from Lowe’s to complete much-needed improvements and renovations. Our Club was selected as the signature Club in the state of Idaho! As the need to update facilities increases and maintenance costs rise, Lowe’s support is helping the Boys & Girls Clubs of Magic Valley- Twin Falls Unit make critical improvements to ensure the Club remains safe and inviting place forTwin Falls’ youth who need them most. Along with Lowe’s, the Club also received in-kind contributions for this project from Petersen Brothers Construction, City of Twin Falls, Thorpe Demolition, Idaho Materials & Construction, EHM Engineers, and Lytle Signs. We are excited about this grant, and the opportunities that it provides for our kids and our community. We will be able to provide outdoor programming space for an additional 120 members. We are grateful to our local Lowe’s and our in-kind contributors for being a HUGE part of this collaborative project. “We at Lowe’s are very excited to have been able to reach out and help the BGCMV in such a big way. The BGCMV provides so much to our community and this will be huge for both the Club and the kids” —Lance Hoover, Lowes Store Manager.

The Goal

The primary goal of this project is to expand our Twin Falls Club to include a two-level, 7,920 square foot addition. The bottom 5,280 square foot level will be for an early child learning center with classrooms designed to encourage dramatic play, sensory learning, literacy, stem -based activities, and high scope curriculum. The state of the art teen center on the second level will be a 2,640 square foot addition including a café, a computer lab and a games room. Our objective is to raise $1.6 million through donations from businesses, individuals, grants and foundations. We will begin the expansion once funds are raised. Our ultimate goal for this project is to break ground in 2019.

SUPPORTERS OF THE YEAR….

Mandi Riddle & Jason Vickrey

Each year, the Club recognizes and celebrates an outstanding individual or organization for their dedication to impacting the lives of local youth. Jason Vickrey and Mandi Riddle have gone above and beyond to help the Club grow and succeed. They both started out by helping with our auction committee in 2010. They did such a great job that we immediately promoted them to chair our auction and join our board of directors. To date, they have helped raise over $1,859,250 through fundraising! We are so grateful for their leadership, dedication, and genuine passion for our Club’s Mission.

“Serving on the Boys & Girls Club board along with co-chairing the auction and golf tournament has been one of the most rewarding times in my life. To know the money raised through these events impacts so many youth in our local communities is a game changer for me. Whether it’s the Club’s summer or after school programs for the kiddos, the teen or tween programs for the middle and high school aged students, or our annual Youth of the Year scholarship program, the difference this Club is making for so many kids is truly amazing!”

—Jason Vickrey, Senior Vice President—Central & Eastern Idaho TitleOne Corporation

“It’s truly been an honor to see the Club grow year after year. I am just amazed to see the impact the Club has on our community; not just with helping kids at our Clubs, but with seeing the community come together to support a great cause! I am excited to see the new growth and to reach youth in other communities as well.”
