WIMBLEDON BOOKFEST 2015

WELCOME Wimbledon BookFest 2015 plays to a wide range of tastes this year from big literary names such as Sebastian Faulks and Louis de Bernières to politics and history with Vince Cable, Shirley Williams and Charles Moore, music with John Kennedy, sport with Brian Moore and comedy with Seann Walsh.

Now in its ninth year, the festival continues to have partnerships very much at its core. This year we are thrilled to be working with Hotel du Vin, Cannizaro House where we will be hosting events including a special evening with Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman. We have also partnered with The Wimbledon Foundation on a photographic project celebrating the diversity of Merton’s ‘Millennials’. With very much back in the news we’re also delighted to be screening the classic movie and for the first time to be hosting the shortlisted entries for the Wimbledon International Short Film Festival.

We thank all our partners, supporters, sponsors, volunteers and all those who attend the BookFest. It wouldn’t happen without you and we do hope you enjoy this year’s programme. We look forward to welcoming you in October for ten magical days on Wimbledon Common!

Fiona Razvi (Festival Director)

The Festival continues to have a succession of high profile authors and we are also keen to develop and nurture local talent. Projects such as The Short Story Competition and our film programme, both run with the University of Roehampton are a continuing success. We look forward to expanding this area of the Festival.

Tony Kane (Chair)

orden poems of love and war

poemslove and war of mary borden

Suffragette, socialite, novelist, nurse, Mary Borden wrote some of the most remarkable poems of the First World War. Still in her twenties, she used her own money to set up and run a field hospital for French soldiers ‘as close to the fighting as possible’. She made it her business ‘to create a counter-wave of life’ against an overwhelming tide of suffering and death. Although married with three children, she fell in love with a young British officer at the Front. The poems she wrote to him during the Battle of the Somme are full of passionate energy and a reckless intensity. Mary Borden’s poems are included in most major anthologies of war poetry, but this is the first full collection of her poems to appear, one hundred years after they were written. It includes a number of poems published in book form for the first time.
