THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF WASHINGTON, D.C
SPECIAL COLLECTIONS FINDING AID
Title: MS 0800, James M. Goode Historic Houses Research Collection
Processor: Brianne Roth, Anne McDonough
Date: February 2015 [Finding Aid last updated April 2016]
James Moore Goode (1939-) is a noted historian of Washington culture and architecture, as well as the author of several important books including, but not limited to, The Outdoor Sculpture of Washington, D.C . (1974); Washington Sculpture: A Cultural History of Outdoor Sculpture in the Nation's Capital (2009); Capital Losses: A Cultural History of Washington’s Destroyed Buildings (1979 and 2003 ); Capital Views: Historic Photographs of Washington, DC, Alexandria and Loudoun County, Virginia, and Frederick County, Maryland (2012); and Best Addresses, a Century of Washington's Distinguished Apartment Houses (1988 and 2003 ).
Dr. Goode has generously donated much of his research material to the Historical Society of Washington, D.C.; see related materials below for additional research collections of possible interest.
Scope and Content Note: The collection comprises original handwritten and typed research notes; correspondence; excerpts from and copies of published materials; brochures and pamphlets; the occasional copy photograph; and other documentation created and gathered in the course of researching and writing, “Capital Houses: Historic Residences of Washington, DC and Its Environs, 1735-1965” (Acanthus Press, 2015). Images produced for the book were donated to the National Gallery of Art, Department of Image Collections.
Dr. Goode changed approaches during the course of the writing process, from initially arranging the book by neighborhood in favor of an arrangement by architectural style. While many of the files are arranged alphabetically and fall into general series and subseries as described below, there are discrepancies which were maintained to reflect the creator’s original order. Material relating to each series maybe found interspersed throughout the collection.
Series I: RESEARCH FILES consists primarily of non-photographic research materials, including original apartment house brochures, field notes, newspaper articles, and research correspondence.
Subseries A: Individual Houses, arranged alphabetically by house name.
1
Subseries B: Research notes for several specific chapters of the book. This series is arranged first by architectural style and then alphabetically by house name for specific chapters of the book, specifically Chapter 1, Georgian Houses of Washington, D.C.; Chapter 2, Federal Houses of Washington, D.C.; and Chapter 9, Norman Revival Houses of Washington, D.C.
Subseries C: Research files for specific neighborhoods, arranged alphabetically by neighborhood name.
Subseries D: Research on individual architects, arranged alphabetically by architectural firm or architect. As this subseries may duplicate material found in James M. Goode Architects in Washington, D.C., collection, 1870-1987. ( MS 0384 ), and may be removed from the collection upon further processing, Subseries D is physically arranged at the end of the collection.
Series II: ADMINISTRATIVE FILES such as contracts, correspondence and files concerning the editing process; photo permissions; and expense reports.
Subseries A: Administrative files, primarily found in Containers 8, 9, 10, 12, and 13, where it is interfiled alphabetically, e.g. Johns Hopkins contract (folder 111) can be found between Jewett House (folder 110) and Kiplinger (folder 112), and Titles (folder 269) can be found between Strathmore (268) and Trentman House (270), and Container 13, where it can be found following folder 300. Administrative material may also be interspersed with other series throughout the collection.
Subseries B: Material designated as “Not to Use,” including folders on specific houses, publishers, photographs, and individual architects. There is no alphabetical or chronological arrangement of files within this series; the physical arrangement follows the creator’s original order.
Processor’s Note: This collection was handled following the principles of “More Product, Less Process,” receiving a basic level of processing including minimal organization and description. The container list indicates the creator’s original order and original folder titles. Original folders were retained wherever possible; contents were verified against folder titles in some but not all cases. Labeled folders that were empty when accessioned by the Historical Society were retained and their titles updated to indicate they were empty when received.
