In this study, we evaluated if the reduction in the forest cover positively affected the richness and abundance of ectoparasites and rates of parasitism on mammal species. The study was carried out in the Atlantic Forest biome in the state of Bahia between January to March and September to November of 2011. We sampled four areas with different amounts of forest cover (%) in the municipalities of Valença (25%), Nilo Peçanha (35%), Camamú (45%) and Jaguaripe (55%). We identified twenty species of ectoparasites (fleas, mites, ticks) on 130 small mammals from 18 species (14 rodents and four marsupials), and the most abundant ectoparasites were mites. We confirmed our main hypothesis: the greater richness and abundance of ectoparasites was associated with a reduction in forest cover, with possible epidemiological implications. The prevalence of ectoparasitism per area varied from 91% in Valença to 50% in Jaguaripe. The mean intensity of ectoparasites per host was 6.5 for Valença, 6.4 for Nilo Peçanha, 10.4 for Camamú and 3.2 for Jaguaripe. Ours findings confirm that the reduction in the amount of forested is related to amplified rates of parasitism and changes in ectoparasites abundance and species richness.   • Riqueza De Espécies E Relevância Para a Conservação
    O Brasil é reconhecidamente um dos países de megadiversidade de mamíferos do mundo, abrigando cerca de 12% de todas as espécies desse grupo existentes no nosso planeta, distribuídas em 12 Ordens e 50 Famílias. Dentre as espécies que ocorrem no País, 210 (30% do total) são exclusivas do território brasileiro. Esses números não só indicam a importância do País para a conservação mundial desses animais como também trazem para a mastozoologia brasileira a responsabilidade de produzir e disseminar conhecimento científico de qualidade sobre um grupo carismático, bastante ameaçado pela ação antrópica e importante componente dos ecossistemas naturais. O próprio aumento no número de espécies reconhecidas para o Brasil nos últimos 15 anos já é um indicativo da resposta que vem sendo dada pelos pesquisadores do País a esse desafio de gerar conhecimento científico de qualidade sobre os mamíferos. Na publicação pioneira de Fonseca e colaboradores (Lista Anotada dos Mamíferos do Brasil, 1996), houve a indicação de 524 espécies brasileiras de mamíferos. Na compilação mais recente, de 2012, esse número passou para 701, o que representa um aumento de quase 34% em 16 anos (Paglia et al., Lista Anotada dos Mamíferos do Brasil , 2a ed., 2012). Visando contribuir para essa produção de conhecimento científico de qualidade sobre mamíferos, há alguns anos atrás nós organizamos uma publicação que reunia estudos científicos inéditos sobre vários aspectos da biologia do grupo, intitulada Mamíferos do Brasil: Genética, Sistemática, Ecologia e Conservação. Esse livro, publicado em 2006, contou com a participação de vários mastozoólogos brasileiros de destaque. A nossa intenção, com o mesmo, era contribuir para a produção e divulgação da informação científica para um público mais amplo, incluindo alunos de graduação e não-acadêmicos interessados em mastozoologia, além é claro dos pesquisadores especialistas na área.

Three nominal mite species were selected for study, all infesting the pelage of small mammals at different localities in Rio de Janeiro, Espírito Santo, Bahia, and the Federal District, Brazil. To analyse morphometric characteristics, thirty-seven morphological characters distributed across the whole body of each specimen were measured. We use the Analysis of Principal Components, extracting the three first axes and projecting each mite in these axes. Major species level changes in the taxonomy of the host mammals allows an independent examination of morphometric variation of mites infesting a set of distinctly different host species at different geographic localities. Gigantolaelaps vitzthumi and Laelaps differens are associated with oryzomyine rodents of the genus Cerradomys, and consistently showed a tendency to cluster by host phylogeny.

There is no report of nematodes parasitizing Cerradomys goytaca, so this is the first one. For this study, 16 rodents were captured in the city of Quissamã, in the northern of Rio de Janeiro State. The rodents were necropsied, and the digestive tracts were analyzed under a stereomicroscope for the presence of parasites. The nematodes were fixed in hot AFA, clarified in Amann’s lactophenol, mounted on slides with coverslip, and observed under an optical microscope. Part of the nematodes was fixed in Karnovisk solution for scanning electron microscopy. Nematodes presented evident sexual dimorphism. Oral openings had two semicircular pseudolabia, with an external lateral tooth and an internal lateral tripartite tooth on each pseudolabium. Males had a ventral spiral curved posterior ends with the presence of a caudal alae with 21 papillae with four pairs of pedunculated papillae arranged laterally, three pre-cloacal sessile papillae arranged rectilinearly and five pairs of post-cloacal sessile papillae. There was also a pair of phasmids located between the fourth and fifth pairs of post-cloacal papillae as well as two spicules that were sub-equal in size but of distinct shapes.

Species that differ in their habitat requirements and tolerance to disturbance should not be equally affected by habitat loss and degradation. Forest dependent species should be more affected by these effects than generalist species that can use more than one habitat type. On the other side, non-native species should benefit from environmental degradation. In this work, we compared the responses of three assemblages of small mammals (forest specialist, generalists and open area dwelling species) along a gradient of forest cover in five landscapes of the Atlantic Forest. We followed the responses of the assemblages in native forests and in non-forested matrices, observing diverse responses in adjacent environments within a forest- matrix system. As was expected, the specialists were the most affected by the loss of native habitat; they decayed considerably in richness and abundance below 35% of habitat in the landscape. Generalist species were not affected by the quantity of habitat in the forest but, conversely, they were positively affected by moderate levels of disturbance in the matrix. Open area species did not colonize the forest irrespective of coverage and they were the dominant assemblage in the disturbed, matrix environment.

Morphometric comparisons of presumptive polyxenous laelapine species infesting a diverse assemblage of palustrine rodents in Paraguay clearly reveal that each host species is infested by a morphologically distinct mite population. The nominal taxa Laelaps manguinhosi, Gigantolaelaps goyanensis, and G. mattogrossensis may be composites of morphologically distinct but similar species with narrower host preferences. These results suggest that laelapine mites are primarily monoxenous, and that numerous currently unrecognized species may be discerned by standard morphometric techniques. Systematic changes proposed as a result of this study include the revalidation of the genus Eubrachylaelaps Ewing, 1929 to include A. rotundus; the recognition of Echinolaelaps as a subgenus of Laelaps; at least, the division of the genus Androlaelaps Berlese, 1903 into two subgenera: Androlaelaps to include A. foxi and Haemolaelaps Berlese 1910 to include A. fahrenholzi. Rodents of the genus Cerradomys belong to the tribe Oryzomyini and present high chromosome variability with diploid numbers ranging from 2n=46 to 60. Classical cytogenetics and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) with telomeric and whole chromosome-specific probes of another Oryzomyini, Oligoryzomys moojeni (OMO), were used to assess the karyotype evolution of the genus. Results were integrated into a molecular phylogeny to infer the hypothetical direc- tion of chromosome changes. The telomeric FISH showed signals in telomeres in species that diverged early in the phy- logeny, plus interstitial telomeric signals (ITS) in some species from the most derived clades (C. langguthi, C. vivoi, C. goytaca, and C. subflavus). Chromosome painting revealed homology from 23 segments of C. maracajuensis and C. marinhus to 32 of C. vivoi. Extensive chromosome reorganization was responsible for karyotypic differences in closely related species. Major drivers for genomic reshuffling were in tandem and centric fusion, fission, paracentric and pericentric inversions or centromere repositioning. Chromosome evolution was associated with an increase and de- crease in diploid number in different lineages and ITS indicate remnants of ancient telomeres.
