Study Design: Random field survey was carried out in the study site to identify and record the taxa. Host species was identified and vascular epiphytes were noted. Study Site and Duration: The study was conducted in the sub-temperate forests of Darjeeling Himalaya which is a part of the eastern Himalaya hotspot. The zone extends between 1200 to 1850 m amsl representing the amalgamation of both sub-tropical and temperate vegetation. -

And, one cannot but agree that it is indeed lovely to see the stretch in the evenings. This is a time of year with promise of better times to come. The dark days of winter are on the retreat and there are signs of new growth in the garden. This year’s weather conditions provided perfect conditions for excellent photographs of the winter solstice at Newgrange and that event marks the turn of the year and bring that much appreciated stretch in the evenings. May I wish all members a very Happy New Year, every success and enjoyment with your gardening during the coming year and I do hope you will come to the IGPS organised events during this coming year. Three mitochondrial (atp1, matR, nad5), four chloroplast (atpB, matK, rbcL, rpoC2), and one nuclear (18S) genes from 162 seed plants, representing all major lineages of gymnosperms and angiosperms, were analyzed together in a supermatrix or in various partitions using likelihood and parsimony methods. The results show that Amborella + Nymphaeales together constitute the first diverging lineage of angiosperms, and that the topology of Amborella alone being sister to all other angiosperms likely represents a local long branch attrac- tion artifact. The monophyly of magnoliids, as well as sister relationships between Magnoliales and Laurales, and between Canellales and Piperales, are all strongly supported. The sister relationship to eudicots of Ceratophyllum is not strongly supported by this study; instead a placement of the genus with Chloranthaceae receives moderate support in the mitochondrial gene analyses. Relationships among magnoliids, monocots, and eudicots remain unresolved. Direct comparisons of analytic results from several data partitions with or without RNA editing sites show that in multigene analyses, RNA editing has no effect on well supported rela- tionships, but minor effect on weakly supported ones. Finally, comparisons of results from separate analyses of mitochondrial and chloroplast genes demonstrate that mitochondrial genes, with overall slower rates of sub- stitution than chloroplast genes, are informative phylogenetic markers, and are particularly suitable for resolv- ing deep relationships. -

Pigg and Melanie L. DeVore Abstract The Princeton chert is one of the most completely studied permineralized floras of the Paleogene. Remains of over 30 plant taxa have been described in detail, along with a diverse assemblage of fungi that document a variety of ecological interactions with plants. As a flora of the Okanagan Highlands, the Princeton chert plants are an assemblage of higher elevation taxa of the latest early to early middle Eocene, with some components similar to those in the relatedDraft compression floras. However, like the well known floras of Clarno, Appian Way, the London Clay, and Messel, the Princeton chert provides an additional dimension of internal structure. -

The lack of knowledge concerning Verhuellia is largely due to its restricted distribution, poorly known collection localities, limited availability in herbaria and absence in botanical gardens and lack of material suitable for molecular phylogenetic studies until recently. Because Verhuellia has some of the most reduced flowers in Piperales, the reconstruction of floral evolution which shows strong trends towards reduction in all lineages needs to be revised. † Methods Verhuellia is included in a molecular phylogenetic analysis of Piperales (trnT-trnL-trnF and trnK/matK), based on nearly 6000 aligned characters and more than 1400 potentially parsimony-informative sites which were partly generated for the present study. Character states for stamen and carpel number are mapped on the combined molecular tree to reconstruct the ancestral states. -

Given the family’s important position in the land-plant phylogeny, studying the evolutionary history of this group is an important step towards a better understanding of plant evolution. Despite this, little is known about the Lycopodiaceae, and a well-sampled, robust phylogeny of the group is lacking. -

March 1973 Portland Oregon 97201 THE OLIGOCENE LYONS FLORA OF NORTHWESTERN OREGON Herb Meyer Student, Portland State University The purpose of this study of the Lyons flora is to determine the age and paleoecology of the flora through the examination and identification of the fossil plant species of the flora. The plant fossi Is comprising the Lyons flora were collected from a locality in the .t~~·fi:~ora upper Thomas Creek area, 5 mi les sou theast of the town of Lyons, Oregon. Geologic Occurrence The beds from which the Lyons flora was obtained are part of the Little Butte Volcanic Series of Oligocene and early Miocene age described by Peck and others(1964). Stratigraphically below the fossil deposit, the Little Butte Volcanic Series is characterized by a pumiceous tuff-breccia which contains blocks and fragments of a volcanic flow rock. This exposure, the base of which is not exposed, underlies the fossil deposit for a thickness of more than 400 feet. The deposit containing the fossi I leaves is composed of a thinly lami nated tuffaceous material which has been silicifed to varying degrees. These beds may have been deposi ted in a sha !low, quiet body of water. Lacustrine deposition is suggested by the stratification of the beds, the abundant pres ence of fossil leaves, and the presence of one water plant in the fossil record. Composition of the Lyons Flora Twenty-four identified fossi I plants represent the Lyons flora as it is known at this point in the study.
