AMANUSA’S BALI

The following are two of Amanusa’s tours, specially developed for our guests. They have been designed to combine Bali’s most secret and famous sites and may be taken as a full tour or you are welcome to select specific points of interest. If you wish to visit any other site in Bali not included here please do not hesitate to contact your Guest Assistant about it.

AMANUSA’S SACRED TEMPLE TOUR

Religious devotions are as much a part of daily life in Bali as breathing, eating and sleeping. To experience the true essence of Bali you really should not miss out on visiting at least one or two temples. Amanusa has developed this fascinating tour of four temples in our area which traces the steps of the Javanese high priest, Dang Hyang Nirartha, who came to Bali in 1537 in search of a sacred site where he could achieve enlightenment, known as Moksa in Hinduism.

This expedition brought Nirartha to our Bukit region of South Bali. The four temples visited on our tour are Pura Goa Gong, Pura Geger, Pura Gunung Payung and Bali’s most famous temple, Pura Luhur Uluwatu; each temple has its own fascinating background of history and legends.

If you are interested in more information about this tour please do not hesitate to contact your Guest Assistant.

MENGESTA’S RICE BASKET TOUR World Heritage Experience

This wonderful and unique tour of discovery takes you to the beating heart of Bali – the island’s rice growing district. The Balinese consider rice to be a direct gift from God, it is the most important crop farmed on the island and is deeply entrenched in the traditions and lifestyle of every community.

Mengesta’s Rice Basket Tour visits some of Bali’s most picturesque rice growing regions and starts off with a visit to the Subak Museum in Tabanan. Subak is Bali’s Rice Farmers’ Co-operative and has been in existence for many hundreds of years and every rice farmer must be a member. The museum clearly demonstrates how the Subak irrigation system functions, the brilliant organisational skills of the Balinese people and their traditional farming methods of rice cultivation. In June 2012 UNESCO granted World Heritage cultural status to Bali’s Subak Irrigation System.

The Tour continues into the heartland of the Bali’s rice growing district with breathtaking views of rice terraces, mountains and traditional villages. A relaxing picnic lunch is set up for you in a shaded bamboo bale in Mengesta, hidden in an idyllic spot with uninterrupted views of the rice terraces against a stunning backdrop of distant mountains.

Additional points of interest along the way include the magnificent temple of Pura Luhur Batukaru, located in a tropical forest 1,300 metres up the slopes of Mt Batukaru; a traditional Balinese family compound; a secluded and little-known Balinese Catholic church.

This is a journey to the very soul of Bali where the traditions of rice, religion, community life, history and personal sacrifice are woven together to provide a fascinating insight into the unique characteristics that make up this remarkable island.

Your Guest Assistant will be happy to provide you with more in depth information about this tour.

AMANUSA SURFING

Bali is renowned for its spectacular surf breaks and its virtual year-round season of accessible waves. It is for this reason that Amanusa is delighted to introduce this surfing experience specially formulated for our guests, in association with East Bali Surf and Sail.

This truly authentic and uniquely Balinese experince is for all levels of surfers, from beginners to advanced, with accomplished Balinese surf guides from East Bali Surf and Sail who will accompany you on your surfing adventure. The team is headed by the legendary Oka Sulaksana, a professional sailor, surfer and windsurfer who has won two gold medals at the Asian Games and is the first sportsman to have represented four times at the Summer Olympics.

Pak Oka continues to remain the undefeated Windsurfing Champion of Indonesia. All of the guides are multilingual in languages including Japanese.

For beginners, the Sanur Reef headquarters of the EBSS is the ideal spot to learn from scratch or warm up your skills if you are a little rusty.

For the intermediate and more advanced surfers, the surf guides, who are pioneers of the East Bali breaks, will tailor-make an unforgettable experience and take you to the most hidden and un-crowded surf breaks in East Bali.

The following is a brief description of the breaks where East Bali Surf & Sail guests will be taken according to the level of their fitness and ability:

HYATT REEF A few kilometres south of Sanur Reef is the Hyatt Reef, home base of EBSS. Here we take beginners out on the boat to the baby reef and get them standing on their boards generally in knee to waist high white water. For the intermediate to advanced surfer, we go across the reef to where the bigger waves are suitable for fit intermediate and advanced surfers only. Booties optional.

SANUR BABY 300 metres north of the Bali Beach Hotel, in front of Matahari Terbit Beach, is a gentle beach break we call ‘Sanur Baby,’ which is suitable for beginners. No booties required.

SANUR REEF This famous right hander is one of the best waves in Bali when it breaks overhead. Recommended for intermediate and advanced only as it breaks over sharp coral. Used by locals this is a territorial break and guests are required to be accompanied by our local guides in order to have a memorable session. Booties optional.

SOUTH OF BALI

BINGIN Bingin’s hollow, fast barrel is addictive for experienced surfers who know how to handle it. However, expect competition from every visitor and local for all the barrels they can score for the day. You should also watch out for the ‘stop sign,’ the raised coral that has prematurely ended many a great surfing vacation for visiting surfers. Take Bingin for what it is, a short left-hand wave that can cost you if you try to get more out of it than you deserve!

ULUWATU Uluwatu has been attracting surfers since the seventies. Uluwatu's five breaks offer surfers consistent swells with multiple chances to show off their skills. Not surprisingly, the place has grown quite crowded over the years. Uluwatu provides the most exhilarating challenge during monsoon season, when the biggest swells hit the island. The temptation of taking on those 15-foot waves should be tempered by knowledge of the dangerous conditions – don’t leave shore without a big board and a sturdy leash.

NUSA DUA Newbies be warned: Nusa Dua’s shallow, sharp reef bottom and powerful, huge right-hand waves should be left to the experts. Nusa Dua is always ready with a wave on hand, the biggest and baddest ones in town at about 15 feet on a good day. Nusa Dua is Bali’s best rainy season surfing destination, peaking between October and April with good access at any time of the year.

PADANG - PADANG The ‘Bali Pipeline’’s surprising ferocity keeps professional surfers on their toes with huge swells and gigantic barrels that are about as fun to watch as they are to surf. The downside: a wipeout here is more painful than most, as the sharp reef bottom and powerful swells create board-breaking, flesh- shredding situations that no one should attempt at low tide. Avoid if you’re a beginner, take precautions if you’re an expert.

BALANGAN Balangan at high tide is great for beginners, who can easily ride this reef break’s long left-hand waves. On really good days, the big waves provide an irresistible challenge to expert surfers. The vibe at Balangan is friendly and low-key, with less competition due to the smaller crowds compared to Kuta and Uluwatu.

WHITE WATER RAFTING An exhilarating rafting excursion and a memorable glimpse into Bali river life can be experienced on various rivers of all grades in Bali. The excursion includes refreshments, snacks lunch, transfers, insurance and takes a full day. Please discuss further arrangements for white water rafting with your Guest Assistant.

DIVING Some of the world’s most exciting and exotic fish are to be found in Indonesian waters. Experienced dive masters will take you on an exciting journey to the best diving spots on the Island. This is an activity well suited for beginners who wish to get certified, as well as for advanced divers. Of particular interest are the Liberty ship wreck in Tulamben, Nusa Penida for the manta rays and our legendary “mola-mola”, a genus of sunfish rarely seen anywhere else in the world. For further details on diving excursions please contact your Guest Assistant.

BOAT CRUISING/ SAILING/ SNORKELING The islands visible to the east of Amanusa are Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan, which are included in the province of Bali. 14 miles from Nusa Dua and with great snorkeling, fishing and beautiful white sandy beaches, these islands are an ideal day cruise destination. A variety of vessels, both power and sailboats, are available. You may join a scheduled cruise or take a private charter. Please contact your Guests Assistant for more details.

Located directly adjacent to Amanusa, this championship course offers a truly unique golfing experience which is both challenging and enjoyable to players of all levels. The par 72 tournament-standard golf course measures 7,166 yards from the back tees and starts off on the outward nine playing up through verdant green, rolling hills and tropical fauna. The first tee, par-4, provides a magnificent view up the fairway to Amanusa. The fourth hole, a deceptive uphill 158 yard par-3, ends on the green with rewarding views of Bali’s holy mountain, Gunung Agung. Hole 8, par-4, requires an accurate tee shot through a wooded ravine. Water features heavily on the way to the 9th green with a babbling brook running the length of the fairway and a picturesque lake to the right of the green, home to a wonderful variety of birds and many golf balls! The inward nine plays on level land through coconut trees and a series of man-made lakes. Hole 17, one of the signature holes, is Bali’s answer to the famous TPCC Sawgrass #17, in Florida. The dangerous par-3 played to an island green requires a well-struck tee shot to avoid a watery beginning. The final hole is an excellent dogleg left which sets up for good birdie possibilities with spectators viewing the finish from the new clubhouse.

NIRWANA BALI GOLF CLUB Located in the Tabanan Regency on the west coast of Bali, approximately one hours’ drive from Amanusa, is the Nirwana Bali Golf Club.

The championship course is par 72 and designed by former British Open champion and world ranked golfer, Greg Norman. It is one of Asia’s most visually spectacular golf courses with holes carved through rice paddies, bubbling creeks, tropical forests and gardens. The highlight of the course is a trio of holes played along the cliffs overlooking the ocean with waves crashing on the foreshore and views of distant volcanoes.

Players have the opportunity to view various temples along the course and experience the harmony of Balinese culture. The signature hole, which is amongst the most dramatic holes in the golfing world, is the Par 3 seventh hole. Playing from cliff top to cliff top across the Indian Ocean, the vista to the west includes Pura , one of Bali’s most beautiful Hindu temples.

The club facilities and services include a championship course, putting and chipping greens, pro shop with a wide selection of equipment and clothing, restaurant and bar.

Green fees include a caddy and mandatory golf cart. Transport to and from Bali Nirwana Golf Club can be organized using Amanusa vehicles and driver.

NEW KUTA GOLF COURSE On the southwestern rim of the Bukit Peninsula, perched above a limestone cliff overlooking Dreamland and Balangan beaches, this scenic 18 hole course is located 30 minutes drive from Amanusa.

New Kuta Golf is a championship standard course and the first links style layout in Indonesia. It will challenge both the low handicapper and reward the novice. With five sets of tees, there is enough variety to ensure a satisfying experience for all skill levels.

The golf rate includes green fee, cart fee, caddy service and player’s insurance. Please discuss your golf booking and transportation requirements further with your Guest Assistant.

Begawan Foundation and the Bali Starlings

Two pairs of Bali Starlings have been ‘fostered’ in a newly erected enclosure at Amankila in East Bali. These birds were bred and raised by Begawan Foundation, established by Bradley and Debora Gardner in 1999 to focus on environment, education and health.

The Gardners brought two pairs of Bali Starlings back home to Bali from England in 1999 and started the captive breeding and release programme, with the goal of once again seeing this iconic bird flying freely in Bali.

Famous both for its beauty and the very real threat that it will become extinct, the Bali Starling has very bright white feathers, with black-tipped wing and tail feathers and a long drooping crest. Its most amazing feature is the beautiful blue skin that surrounds its eyes.

The Bali Starling, the mascot of Bali, was registered as a critically endangered bird species by CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) in 1970.

After breeding a total of 85 birds, 65 Bali Starlings were released during 2006 and 2007 on Nusa Penida. These releases followed a program of discussion with all local communities, and the setting up of ‘awig awig’, local community law to protect the released birds. In 2007 12 birds were released by Bapak Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, President of the Republic Indonesia and the First Lady, Ibu Kristiani Herawati. Begawan Foundation continues to monitor all released birds on a daily basis and reports to the Forestry Department here in Bali.

Currently the Foundation’s breeding and release site is located at Sibang, near Ubud, where a small release was undertaken in 2012. The birds adapt their behaviour to suit their new environment. There are a number of different fruits that suit the Starlings’ diet and the wild figs from the local fig trees are a favourite. Insects, small lizards and worms are also part of their diet.

Amankila is proud to have been nominated as custodians and home to two breeding pairs of these beautiful birds, with the aim eventually to return to freedom a number of these birds with the support and help of the local community.

It is hoped that more pairs will find a home at Amandari and Amanusa in the near future. Donations received will go directly to Begawan Foundation who will allocate the funds to the preservation and welfare of the birds. www.begawanfoundation.org www.facebook.com/begawanfoundation
