ABSTRACT Lathyrus species are well placed to meet the increasing global demand for food and animal feed, at the time of climate change. Conservation and sustainable use of the genetic resources of Lathyrus is of significant importance to allow the regain of interest in Lathyrus species in world. A comprehensive global database of Lathyrus species originating from the Mediterranean Basin, Caucasus, Central and West Asia Regions is developed using accessions in major genebanks and information from eight herbaria in Europe. This Global Lathyrus database was used to conduct gap analysis to guide future collecting missions and in situ conservation efforts for 37 priority species. The results showed the highest concentration of Lathyrus priority species in the countries of the Fertile Crescent, France, Italy and Greece. -

Stylar features of 35 taxa including Lathyrus (26 species), Pisum (3 species), Vicia (4 species) and Lens (2 species) were examined using electron microscopy (SEM). The results show that four genera Lathyrus, Lens, Pisum and Vicia are different in terms of stylar features. At least eight stylar types can be recognized in the tribe Fabeae. Lathyrus is the most variable genus in this regard showing four different stylar types: (1) straight, linear and evenly hairy styles (Sle-type), (2) straight, spathulate and evenly hairy styles (Sse-type), (3) contorted, linear and evenly hairy styles (Cle-type) and (4) contorted, spathulate and evenly hairy styles (Cse-type). Furthermore, the styles are dorsiventrally compressed and adaxially evenly hairy in this genus. Two stylar types: (5) dorsiventrally compressed and evenly hairy all round (De-type) and (6) dorsiventrally compressed and abaxially tufted (Dabt-type) were recognized in Vicia. Other two types: (7) cylinder, non-compressed and adaxially evenly hairy style (Cne-type) and (8) longitudinally folded, canaliculated, laterally compressed and adaxially evenly hairy style (Fce-type) were recognized in Lens and Pisum, respectively. Special focus on Lathyrus revealed that stylar features do not corroborate the current sectional classification of the genus. -

Abstract: The essential oil of the aerial parts of edible Lathyrus ochrus L. was investigated by simultaneous GC, GC/MS analyses under the same conditions. Trace amount of oil (0.01> mL) obtained by hydro distillation of 200 g fresh plants was trapped in 1 mL n-hexane. Twenty components were detected representing 91.55 ± 0.56 % of the oil. The main components were phytol 49.39 ± 0.44 %, hexadecanoic acid 20.64 ± 0.89 % and pentacosane 4.20 ± 0.09 %. Essential oil solution (1% oil: n-hexane) afforded similar DPPH scavenging activity (9.28 ± 1.30 %) when compared with positive controls α-tocopherol (9.74 ± 0.21 %) and BHT (7.79 ± 0.26 %) at the same concentrations. Antioxidant activity of the oil was determined using a new HPTLC-PRAP assay. The oil afforded two fold higher reducing activity of phosphomolybdenum complex (594.85 ± 5.14 AU) when compared with positive controls α- tocopherol (271.10 ± 2.86 AU) and BHT (210.53 ± 1.81 AU) at the same concentration. -

In the present research, volatiles of seven Lathyrus L. species, namely, L. aphaca, L. ochrus, L. cicera, L. sativus, L. gorgonei, L. saxatilis and L. blepharicarpos var. cyprius were analyzed by SPME GC-MS for the first time. Plant materials were collected from five different locations in Cyprus (February-March 2012). The main components of L. aphaca volatiles from four locations were yomogi alcohol 26.1-16.5%, camphor 21.6-10.1%, tetradecane 14.3-0%; L. cicera from five locations were yomogi alcohol 20.3-3.0%, camphor 18.7-2.0%; L. gorgonei from two locations were yomogi alcohol 24.5- 13.1%, camphor 17.1-9.0% and L. -

ABSTRACT The value of wild plant species related to crops (crop wild relatives, or CWR) as sources of traits for pest and disease resistance, tolerance of environmental conditions, yield enhancement, improved nutrition, and a range of other agronomic characteristics, has been recognized since the early 20th century. However, these species are inadequately conserved, which in turn is limiting their utilization potential. In this thesis, based on the published definition of a CWR, a systematic, practical and replicable method for creating a comprehensive CWR checklist and an approach to identifying priority taxa for conservation action are proposed. The process of evaluating the threat status of CWR to inform conservation planning is also elaborated. These methodologies are presented and discussed in the broader context of CWR conservation planning at national and regional scales, and illustrated with China and Europe as case studies. -

Bitkisel verilerin sağlandığı alanlar Avrupa-Sibirya ve İran-Turan bitki coğrafyası bölgelerinde ve Doğu Karadeniz Bölümü (2c) içerisinde yer almaktadır. Bu çalışmada, Pteridophyta ve Spermatophyta bölümlerine dâhil 69 familya, 221 cinse ait toplam 331 vasküler bitki taksonu tespit edilmiştir. Pteridophyta bölümüne ait 6 adet, Spermatophyta bölümünün Gymnospermae ve Angiospermae alt bölümlerine ait sırasıyla 7 ve 318 adet takson saptanmış; bunlar APGIII’e göre sistematik liste halinde sunulmuştur. Listelenen 173 (% 52,27) taksonun bitki coğrafyası bölgesi belirtilmiştir. Bu bitkilerden Avrupa-Sibirya, İran-Turan ve Akdeniz elementi sayısı sırasıyla 115 (% 34,74), 45 (% 13,60) ve 13 (% 3,93)’tür. Ayrıca 1 (% 0,30) adet kozmopolit, 2 (% 0,60) adet egzotik takson tespit edilmiştir. Bu çalışmaya konu taksonların 35 adeti endemik ve 7 adeti de endemik olmayan nadir taksondur. Ayrıca saptanan bu taksonların IUCN tehlike kategorileri de belirtilmiştir. Saptanan bitki çeşitliliği ve odun dışı orman ürünlerine ait veriler Orman Genel Müdürlüğü’nün BİYOD veri tabanına girilmiştir.
