Brisbane's Home of Music Festivals Brisbane’s home of music festivals The Brisbane Showgrounds hosts some of Australia’s biggest music festivals each year, featuring major international artists to our home-grown country heroes. We have a large variety of indoor and outdoor spaces, so whether it’s an intimate performance for 1,000 people or multistage event for 40,000, our inner-city venue is highly sought after for music festivals. The Brisbane Showgrounds is close to many transport options including Fortitude Valley Train Station and two major bus stations. Plenty of parking and accommodation is also available onsite and in the area.     Authors: Jodie Grigg, Simon Lenton and Amy Peacock National Drug Research Institute Faculty of Health Sciences, Curtin University • Among the 2018 EDRS sample, 12% reported recently experiencing significant adverse effects following ecstasy use. • Younger age and screening positive for potential ecstasy dependence (SDS score ≥ 3) was associated with significantly greater odds of reporting recent adverse effects. • These findings suggest more frequent, less severe adverse consequences should perhaps be given more attention than they are currently, and could be an opportunity for early intervention. • Further efforts should be made to identify novel ways to identify and engage at risk young people. Drug checking services could be one way of engaging this hard-to-reach population. In a number of countries, including Australia, ecstasy-related deaths have become an increasing public health concern (1). According to media reports, in Australia there have been at least 15 deaths linked to drugs sold as ‘ecstasy’ in the past 5 years alone (2-9). However, official statistics are currently unavailable as the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) use International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems 10th Revision (ICD-10) coding which groups ecstasy with wider psychostimulants, such as methamphetamine (10). While Australia also has the National Coronial Information System (NCIS), which allows access to detailed toxicology information for authorised persons, there are normally lags of 1-3 years. Similarly, the number of hospitalisations associated with ‘ecstasy’ use is also unavailable due to these same coding issues. Although some jurisdictions are beginning to systematically collect and test biological samples from hospital patients, at present these initiatives appear limited (11).

    B U Sebastian Moody &c. S PROJECTS B U ‘The View’ is a suite of conceptual paintings by Sebastian Moody. The paintings are meditations on the idea of perspective, considering this as an act that occurs simultaneously-internally and externally. Simply, the works are “thinking about looking” or “looking at thinking”. Moody’s practice is concerned with how our values and ideas are constructed. In equal parts gravitas and humour, his art is most often presented through public text works, relational performances, and painting. His well known large-scale public text works have appeared in swimming pools, vehicular underpasses, and building walls; elsewhere, Moody’s works have appeared in a diversity of public and private locations creating personals ads, market research campaigns, kitchen splashbacks, coffee cup ‘interventions’, pop- up bars, focus groups, hang gliders at music festivals, shopping receipt ‘portraits’.     May 14, 2018 Queensland music’s night of nights at the Royal ICC The state’s best music artists and rising stars will be recognised at the Queensland Music Awards at the Royal International Convention Centre (Royal ICC) tonight. Already an ARIA award-winner, popular Gold Coast singer Amy Shark is leading the way alongside Brisbane band The Jungle Giants with three nominations each – Amy in the pop, regional and singer/songwriter categories and The Jungle Giants in the pop, video and Album of the Year sections. With 23 awards up for grabs, the Queensland Music Awards, run by QMusic, are expected to attract more than 600 music industry identities and fans tonight. The prestigious awards have been running since 2006 and with industry heavyweights including Petrina Convey from Sony Music on the judging panel, they’ve kick-started the careers of many well-known artists including Emma Louise, best known for her song ‘My Head is a Jungle.’ Brisbane Showgrounds General Manager of Venue Sales and Marketing Jago Coyle said it was the first time the Queensland Music Awards had been held at the Royal ICC. “The Brisbane Showgrounds is the perfect venue fit – it has been home to some of the most popular music festivals including Livid, Soundwave, Stereosonic and Laneway for years,” he said. “We’re thrilled to host this event, as it celebrates Queensland music and supports artists and music fans across the state.” The Queensland Music Awards get underway at 6pm.     Factors that influence engagement in on-site environmentally responsible behaviours at music festivals Marisol Alonso Vazquez Bachelor in Foreign Trade Master in Marketing A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2014 Business School i Abstract The study of on-site environmentally responsible behaviours at outdoor events is important because of the negative environmental degradation that may be caused when hosting these events. Studying these behaviours is especially important at music festivals that are held in protected areas, and/or for festival managers who have an interest in controlling the events’ negative environmental impacts. Despite recent interest by event managers in developing strategies to encourage attendees’ environmentally responsible behaviours, this task is still a challenge because attendees may be disinterested in behaving pro-environmentally in the music festival context. Given this, event managers need to find novel ways to encourage attendees to participate more in on-site environmentally responsible behaviours. To contribute toward finding alternative ways to encourage more participation, this research investigated the major psychographic factors that influence attendees’ engagement in on-site environmentally responsible behaviours at music festivals. To identify these factors, the following research activities were carried out: phone interviews with music festival managers (10 participants); two online questionnaires (pre-visit and post-visit to festivals) across multiple music festivals (1,313 and 420 participants, respectively); and on-site interviews with attendees at a three-day music festival located near an Australian national park (81 participants). The findings of this study reveal that event managers consider it important to build a pro- environmental culture into their event communities in order to capitalise on attendees’ sense of community that may support environmentally responsible behaviours.

The AFA is a not-for-profit member-run industry association formed to represent the shared interests of the festival industry. A national body, our members comprise festival promoters and organisers across a range of festival sizes, regions and compositions. AFA members also include small business owners with a vested interest in the industry such as medical providers, security agencies, site managers, and suppliers of infrastructure like toilets and marquees. As the peak body representing festivals across Australia, our members are concerned about the future of festivals in NSW. In 2017 the NSW share of live performance revenue in this country had already dropped behind Victoria1. Without rapid change, members predict more festival cancellations and relocations2, and that new entrants to this sector will consider starting in more supportive states like Victoria, the ACT and Queensland.
