The genus Metallyticus reviewed (Insecta: Mantodea) Frank Wieland Johann-Friedrich-Blumenbach-Institut für Zoologie & Anthropologie und Zoologisches Museum der Georg-August-Universität, Abteilung für Morphologie, Systematik und Evolutionsbiologie, Berliner Str. 28, 37073 Göttingen, Germany [[email protected]] Abstract Metallyticus Westwood, 1835 (Insecta: Dictyoptera: Mantodea) is one of the most fascinating praying mantids but little is known of its biology. Several morphological traits are plesiomorphic, such as the short prothorax, characters of the wing venation and possibly also the lack of discoidal spines on the fore femora. On the other hand, Metallyticus has autapomor- phies which are unique among extant Mantodea, such as the iridescent bluish-green body coloration and the enlargement of the first posteroventral spine of the fore femora. The present publication reviews our knowledge of Metallyticus thus providing a basis for further research. Data on 115 Metallyticus specimens are gathered and interpreted. The Latin original descriptions of the five Metallyticus species known to date, as well as additional descriptions and a key to species level that were originally published by Giglio-Tos (1927) in French, are translated into English. -

Cryptic Female Mantids Signal Quality Through Brightness

Cryptic coloration may evolve in response to selective pressure imposed by predators, yet effective intraspecific communication may require some level of detectability. This creates a tension between the benefits of sexually selected visual traits and the predatory costs imposed by greater conspicuousness, and little is known about how this tension may be ameliorated in highly cryptic species. 2. We explore these competing demands in the false garden mantid Pseudomantis albofimbriata, a colour-blind and seemingly cryptic insect. We use reflectance spectrometry and receptor-noise modelling to characterize the conspicuousness of mantid body regions in the visual systems of mates (mantids), as well as potential predators (birds) and prey (bees). We then use condition manipulation and conspecific choice tests to further explore the colour traits of interest. 3. Based on visual modelling, we find that male mantids are inconspicuous to conspecifics, prey and predators – that is, they are chromatically and achromatically cryptic. In contrast, female mantids are chromatically cryptic to all potential receivers, but their abdomens are achromatically conspicuous. Our food manipulation experiment shows that females in good condition (and therefore with more eggs) have brighter abdomens than females in poor condition. Choice assays show male mantids are consistently attracted to females bearing brighter abdomens. 4. Our results reveal brightness-mediated sexual signalling in a colour-blind and classically cryptic insect. -

LE PEUPLEMENT ANIMAL DE LA PRAIRIE D’ALTITUDE 51 Inventaire et originalité du peuplement animal de la prairie d’altitude du Nimba Maxime LAMOTTE & Roger ROY Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle, Bâtiment d’Entomologie, 45, rue Buffon, 75005 Paris, France RÉSUMÉ Milieu bien délimité et d’une originalité certaine, la prairie d’altitude du Nimba a fait l’objet de nombeuses prospections faunistiques depuis 1942. Le matériel observé et recueilli a été étudié par de nombreux spécialistes, de sorte que l’on peut présenter maintenant, au moins pour les groupes les mieux connus, un inventaire valable de la faune. C’est ainsi que sont traités, avec des développements variés, les Némathelminthes, les Annélides, les Mollusques, les Arthropodes, avec une attention particulière pour les Insectes, et les Vertébrés. Le problème de l’endémisme des espèces trouvées seulement dans la prairie d’altitude est ensuite posé, problème non résolu dans de nombreux cas étant donné l’imprécision avec laquelle est encore connue la faune africaine dans son ensemble. ABSTRACT Census and originality of the animal community in the Nimba altitude grassland The Nimba altitude grassland, which constitutes a well delimited habitat with great originality, has been the object of numerous faunistic surveys since 1942. The specimens observed and collected were studied by many specialists, so that we can now, at least for the best known groups, set out a good census of the fauna. Thus, are treated with various extents the Nemathelminthes, Annelida, Mollusca, Arthropoda with a special attention for Insecta, and Vertebrata. The problem of endemism for those species found only in the altitude grassland is then tackled, a problem unresolved in many cases considering the imprecision with which is known the African fauna in its whole. -

The majority of these taxa have vague taxonomic limits, as original descriptions are often very short, making strong emphasis on superficial characters (Rivera 2010). One clear example of this is the Amazonian Mantellias Westwood, 1889, a monotypical genus represented by Mantellias pubicornis Westwood, 1889. Westwood (1889) described M. pubicornis presumably on the basis of specimens obtained in Brazil (Pará and Amazonas States). Westwood’s original description emphasized male characters, briefly mentioned the alleged female, and included a few measurements of both sexes. The exact number of individuals in the type series was not indicated. He classified Mantellias within the “Miomantides”, along with Miopteryx Saussure, 1869 and Mantillica Westwood, 1889. No type was designated. Since its original description, M. pubicornis has been cited only in catalogs, checklists and identification -

Insects are now regarded as comprising only those hexapods with 11 abdominal segments. Whereas crustaceans are the dominant group of arthropods in the sea, hexapods prevail on land, in numbers and biomass. Altogether, the Hexapoda constitutes the most diverse group of animals – the estimated number of described species worldwide is just over 900,000, with the beetles (order Coleoptera) comprising more than a third of these. Today, the Hexapoda is considered to contain four classes – the Insecta, and the Protura, Collembola, and Diplura. The latter three classes were formerly allied with the insect orders Archaeognatha (jumping bristletails) and Thysanura (silverfish) as the insect subclass Apterygota (‘wingless’). The Apterygota is now regarded as an artificial assemblage (Bitsch & Bitsch 2000). -

O’Hanlon3 & Accepted: 01 November 2016 Frank Wieland4 Published: 01 December 2016 Here we reconstruct the evolutionary shift towards floral simulation in orchid mantises and suggest female predatory selection as the likely driving force behind the development of extreme sexual size dimorphism. Through analysis of body size data and phylogenetic modelling of trait evolution, we recovered an ancestral shift towards sexual dimorphisms in both size and appearance in a lineage of flower-associated praying mantises. Sedentary female flower mantises dramatically increased in size prior to a transition from camouflaged, ambush predation to a floral simulation strategy, gaining access to, and visually attracting, a novel resource: large pollinating insects. Male flower mantises, however, remained small and mobile to facilitate mate-finding and reproductive success, consistent with ancestral male life strategy. Although moderate sexual size dimorphisms are common in many arthropod lineages, the predominant explanation is female size increase for increased fecundity. However, sex-dependent selective pressures acting outside of female fecundity have been suggested as mechanisms behind niche dimorphisms. Our hypothesised role of predatory selection acting on females to generate both extreme sexual size dimorphism coupled with niche dimorphism is novel among arthropods. Dimorphisms in form and size between males and females, common across arthropods1, can be driven by sex-specific selective pressures2,3. In many arthropod groups, such as the golden orb web-building spider Nephila clavipes (Linnaeus, 1767), females have larger bodies to increase fecundity while males remain small for mobility during mate-finding4,5. -
