Russell Dennis DeArrieta Assessor Deputy Assessor 2009-2010 Fiscal Year Tax Roll for Elko County To the Taxpayers of Elko County The 2009-2010 Tax Roll Assessment List within this issue is published as mandated by Nevada Revised Statute (NRS) 361.300. All information contained herein is available at the Elko County Assessor’s Office, 571 Idaho St, Elko, Nevada. It is also available on the Elko County website at elkocountynv.net. Our office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. -5:00 p.m. NRS 361.225 mandates that the assessed value of property be based on a ratio of 35% of the taxable value which is determined through the use of guidelines established by the Nevada State Tax Commission. Statutes mandate each year that the County Assessor ascertain and establish assessed value for all real and personal property in the county which is subject to taxation. When property values change from the previous fiscal tax year, a notice must be mailed to any property owner affected by such value changes. Property owners who believe the market value of their property is less than the taxable value or believe they were assessed differently than comparable property may contact the Assessor’s Office Appraisal Department at 738- 5217 or 738-3088 for an explanation of these values. If not satisfied after speaking with the Assessor’s Office, a property owner may file a petition with the Elko County Board of Equalization. The filing of the petition is accomplished by filling out a form available in the Assessor’s Office. The petition will be scheduled for presentation to the Elko County Board of Equalization during its meetings in the month of February 2009. The petition must be filed no later than January 15th, 2009. Persons not satisfied with the decision of the Elko County Board of Equalization may file an appeal with the Nevada State Board of Equalization no later than March 10th, 2009. I want to take this opportunity to inform the taxpayers of the different types of exemptions available to assist individuals meeting certain requirements. Some of these include veterans, disabled veterans, surviving spouses, and blind persons. These exemptions can be used on land, personal property and/or vehicles (Basic Government Services tax). The values vary depending on qualifications and where they are used. • Veterans – There is certain criteria that must be met. Submit a copy of DD214 or discharge certificates for review. • Disabled Veterans – Permanent service connected disability of at least 60%. • Surviving Spouse – Copy of spouse’s Death Certificate • Blind – Visual acuity that does not exceed 20/200 or field of vision subtends an angle of 20 degrees or less. Must furnish a doctor’s statement. Nevada also offers a Senior Citizen Tax Assistance/Rental Rebate program to persons 62 of age or older, with an annual income of $27,863.00 or less, per household. This program applies to any person meeting all requirements regardless of whether you own your home, rent an apartment or house or live in a mobile home. The filing period for the program is from February 1 to April 30 of each year. Please call the Assessor’s office at 738-5217 ext 29 for more information. With the last Legislation session an increase in value does not mean an increase in taxes of the same. The taxes for an owner occupied home have been capped at 3% maximum increase and all other property at 6.0%.
