A collection of 15 lectures, articles and essays is richly illustrated with sketches of over 50 of Doshi's personal hands. Balkrishna Doshi (born 1927 in Pune, India) played a key role in shaping the post-colonial architecture of India. He is a pioneer in addressing major issues of social housing and urbanization in India. Doshi influenced the development of Indian architecture greatly with his teaching and lecture activities and played a key role in the development of Ahmedabad into the center of Indian architecture education. This atalgia summarizes the choice of his writings, such as lectures, writings and essays. Doshi, who worked at Le Corbusier in Paris for six years in the 1950s, has also always sought contacts with Western architects, such as promoting the work of Louis Kahn in India. Doshi has been an architecture specialist for over 70 years, has received many awards and has been awarded the Pritzker Architecture Award in 2018. [1] He is considered an important figure in Indian architecture and noted for his contribution to the development of architectural discourse in India. [2] Worked for Le Corbusier and Louis Kahn, he is a pioneer of modernist and brutalist architecture in India. His more noteworthy designs include IIM Bangalore, IIM Udaipur, NIFT Delhi, Amdavad ni Gufa, CEPT University, and Aranya Low Cost Housing Development Indore, which was awarded the Aga Khan Award for Architecture. [3] In 2018, he became the first Indian architect to receive the Pritzker Architecture Award, which is considered one of the most prestigious awards in architecture. [4] [5] He has also been awarded padma Shri and Padma Bhushan. [6] Early life Doshi was born in Pune. [7] At the age of 11, he was injured in a fire accident and has since gone with a slight limp. From 1947 to 1950, he studied at the University of Mumbai Art School. [9] Careers by Le Corbusier at the unfinished Shodhan House, c. 1955. Between 1951 and 1954, he worked closely with Le Corbusier on its projects in Paris. In 1954, he returned to India to oversee the Corbusier buildings in Ahmedabad, which included Villa Sarabhai, Villa Shodhan, Mill Owners' Association Building and Sanskar Kendra. Corbusier has been described as a major influence on Doshi's later work. His studio Vastu-Shilpa (environmental design) was established in 1955. Doshi worked closely with Louis Kahn and Anant Raje when Kahn designed the campus of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. In 1958, he was a colleague at the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in Art. He then started the School of Architecture (S.A) in 1962. Teaching apart from his international fame as an architect, Dr. Doshi is just as known as a educator and institutional builder. He was the first founder of the School of Architecture, Ahmedabad (1962-1972), the first founder of the Planning School (1972-1979), the first dean of the Environmental Planning and Technology Centre (1972-1981), founder of the Centre for Visual Arts, founder and first founder of the Amdāvada Kaure Art Centre. Dr. Doshi has been instrumental in setting up a national and internationally renowned research institute for the Vastu-Shilpa Foundation for research and research in environmental design. The Institute has done leading work in low-cost housing and urban planning. His work is considered noteworthy for his pioneering work on low-income housing. He has also noted designs that include concepts of sustainability in an innovative way. [10] Recognition Doshi is a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects and has been part of the Pritzker Prize Selection Committee, the Indras Gandhi National Centre for Art and the Aga Khan Architecture Award. He is also a fellow at the Indian Institute of Architects. Doshi's work on the reunification of Indian and English heritage through his practice was awarded the World Award for Sustainable Architecture in 2007, the award's first edition. The award recognized Doshi as an important step in the direction of an alternative development model. [11] In March 2018, Doshi received the Pritzker Architecture Prize, the Nobel Prize, which is the Nobel Prize for the territory, thus becoming the first Indian to receive the honor. The Pritzker jury stated that Doshi has always created an architecture that is serious, never flashy or follower of trends, and noted his deep sense of responsibility and willingness to promote his country and its people through high-quality, authentic architecture. [5] Style Doshi says he is inspired by historical Indian monuments, as well as the work of European and American architects. [12] On June 27, 2017, Dr. Doshi has received several international and naño awards and awards in recognition of his outstanding contribution as a professional and academic.
