Simon Fraser University Library Burnaby, BC, Canada Last revision: Spring 09 ABSTRACT In recent years, many scholars have studied the life and writings of Teresa of Avila, but few have situated her mysticism within a larger religious context. Furthermore, scholars have not thoroughly examined Teresa‟s bridal spirituality, a common theme in her writings, and they have not sufficiently discussed how the mysticism of medieval male and female writers shaped her bridal spirituality. Therefore, the aim of this thesis is to understand how traditional or innovative Teresa‟s bridal spirituality was within the context of the medieval mystical tradition. A close comparison between the writings of Teresa and medieval mystics reveals that her bridal spirituality is often traditional, similar to the bridal mysticism of Bernard of Clairvaux, Catherine of Siena, Angela of Foligno, and Gertrude of Helfta. However, she occasionally offered an innovative perspective on bridal spirituality.     Mental Imagery in Eastern Orthodox Private Devotion by Father Sergei Sveshnikov Just as there can be a properly trained voice, there can be a properly trained soul.[1] —Fr. Alexander Yelchaninov This presentation is based on the research that I undertook for a book titled Imagine That… : Mental Imagery in Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Private Devotion, published in paperback in February of 2009 with the blessing of His Eminence Archbishop Kyrill of San Francisco. The work is an analytical comparison of Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox attitudes toward mental imagery. In this presentation, I wish to focus specifically on the Orthodox tradition of prayer. * * * Eastern Orthodoxy displays a great degree of uniformity in following a path of stillness of thought and silence of mind to achieve the prayer of heart in private devotion. Saint John Climacus writes in The Ladder (28:19) that “the beginning of prayer consists in chasing away invading thoughts…” (285) The mind is to be freed from all thoughts and images and focused on the words of prayer. Further in the chapter on prayer (28), St. John instructs not to accept any sensual images during prayer, lest the mind falls into insanity (42; 289); and not to gaze upon even necessary and spiritual things (59; 292). Unlike some forms of Roman Catholic spirituality, the Orthodox Tradition does not encourage the use of mental imagery. In fact, it almost appears to forbid sensory imagination during prayer altogether. In the words of one of the contemporary Orthodox elders, Abbot Nikon (Vorobyev) (1894-1963), “that, which sternly, decisively, with threats and imploring is forbidden by the Eastern Fathers—Western ascetics strive to acquire through all efforts and means” (424).

It focuses on women who gained prominence as visionaries and thus became targets of inquisitorial scrutiny, because Inquisition documents are the traditional source base for historians to reach these otherwise (typically) voiceless individuals and communities. The field has traditionally argued that the power, number, and presence of these visionary women slowly declined throughout the early modern period owing to the pressures of the Counter-Reformation. Catholic reformers at the Council of Trent (1545–1563) specifically identified female lay and religious visionaries—who had grown rampant after Catherine of Siena became a famous visionary and religious leader in the fourteenth century— as threats to the Catholic canon.

As with other Rolle lyrics, “Þi ioy” is written in monorhymed quatrains, with internal rhyme in each stanza at the caesura. In its complete form, the poem also appears in Cambridge, University Library MS Dd.5.64, part 3, and in Warminster, Marquess of Bath, Longleat MS 29. In Dd.5.64, the last ten stanzas, here lines 49-88, are written as a separate poem, while in the Lincoln and Longleat manuscripts the poem is written as a single continuous piece of verse. The multiple presentations of this poem introduce the possibility of authorial revisions made in light of the author’s knowledge of the audience.

By the early seventeenth-century, a widespread dissatisfaction can be discerned among many awakened Protestants at the suppression of the monastic life and a new interest in reintroducing ascetic practices like celibacy, poverty, and solitary withdrawal to Protestant devotion. The introduction and chapter one explain how the absence of monasticism as an institutionally sanctioned means to express intensified holiness posed a problem to many Protestants. Large numbers of dissenters fled the mainstream Protestant religions—along with what they viewed as an increasingly materialistic, urbanized world—to seek new ways to experience God through lives of seclusion and ascetic self-deprival. In the following chapters, I show how this ascetic impulse drove the formation of new religious communities, transatlantic migration, and gave birth to new attitudes and practices toward sexuality and gender among Protestants. The study consists of four case studies, each examining a different non-conformist community that experimented with ascetic ritual and monasticism.

    Erotic Devotion: Richard Rolle's The Form of Living Clare Davidson University of Western Australia This article considers Richard Rolle's use of erotic imagery and romantic metaphor in his popular fourteenth-century devotional manual, The Form of Living. The Form engaged a widespread community of readers through the glorification of desire and pleasure, which were sanctified by merit of Christ, the lover that Rolle encouraged his readers to woo. While the use of language in the text is inclusive, allowing all readers to become lovers of Christ, the text is addressed to the particular needs of an ideal reader—a celibate anchorite in a nuptial relationship with him as a man—and thus also allows readers to participate in an exclusive romance as an observer. This article will examine The Form's popularity within a diverse readership, arguing that the spiritual and bodily romance Rolle constructed between an imagined lover and Christ is central to its appeal to all Middle English readers. Richard Rolle's The Form of Living, a fourteenth-century religious manual, uses descriptions of sensuous religious love to appeal to a diverse range of readers. Though the text was purportedly constructed as an instructional guidebook for a female recluse dedicated to loving Christ, as a devotional work it proved exceptionally popular. Rolle engaged with his readers through the celebration of desire, romance, and eroticism, welcoming them into an intimate relationship that was developed between him as the author, the anchorite he addresses throughout the text and, most significantly, Christ. Rolle encouraged the reader to move through various stages of loving Christ, and the sensual aspects of late Middle English spirituality form a gradus amoris of love and desire beginning with identification of Christ as the love object and culminating in erotic fulfilment.

With the exhibition entitled Dal visibile all’indicibile. Crocifissi ed esperienza mistica in Angela da Foligno (Foligno, October 6th, 2012 – January 6th, 2013) and the publication of the catalogue, relations between Angela’s visions and her artistic context have been examined in greater depth. However, despite the excellent essays included in the book, there is still lacking a theoretical basis to explain Angela's devotional relationship with some images and, in particular, her reception of them. Mystics often perceive the presence of God throughout the world of nature and in all that is alive, leading to a transfiguration of the ordinary all around them. However, the touch of God is most strongly felt deep within their own hearts. There are many different kinds of mystics in all religions, and we have in recent years become increasingly aware of their existence and heritage. Many people today are drawn to mystics for inspiration and transformation. They offer a message of wholeness and healing, of harmony, peace, and joy—also of immense struggles fought and won. During the twentieth century we have witnessed destructive events not thought possible in earlier times. We have observed the breakdown of old values, the questioning of traditional ways of life, as well as of the teachings of religion. There is much doubt and searching, as well as an immense spiritual hunger, especially among the young.
