Online Family Chat ‐ Main Lobby Thursday, September 3, 2015

familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): Hi everyone, welcome to today's family chat! My name is Kris Klann and familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): I'm the Associate Director for New Student & Family Programs. familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): We have two chatrooms set up for both Advising and Housing questions, which you can access in the upper right corner. dmpc1996: Hello Kris, Thanks for speaking to us. bridget: my student doesn't have any friends what the best way to meet some familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): for general questions, feel free to ask those in the main lobby, and we will get to them as quickly as possible. familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): Hi Bridget, it's still early in the semester, but find friends and a community is important. Your student can try getting involved with our over 1000 students organizations. If they aren't sure which one's to try out, the office of Student Activities & Involvement has an Involvement Team (https://www.studentinvolvement.ufl.edu/ITeam) which can do an individual consultation with your student.

Gail52: My daughter recently went to the infirmary with a very badly sprained ankle. She was told it sprained and to rest, ice, compress and elevate. Great advise. But didn't give her an Ace Bandage for compression. My medical insurance is paying for her, so I don't understand why no Ace Bandage. Would you know why? carlmorse55: Can wemeet any of the teachers during Family Weekend? familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): Hi Gali, I'm not sure either. I would have her follow up to see if they have one available that she can have. Another option is that their are two CVS pharmacies close to campus, as well as a Publix. msbhayes: Hi‐my student is ready to come home‐extremely homesick ‐ very involved but thinks they are the only one experiencing missing home! Any advice wouild be appreciated. familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): Hi Carl, we typically don't have professors available at Family Weekend, however, there will be academic advisors on hand for you to do open houses with if you'd like. tbowman11: How often should we be contacting (cell phone or email) our kids and is expecting to speak with them every 1 to 2 days too much? My son only receives calls‐ doesn't reach out to call us. Is anyone else experiencing this as well?

[email protected]: Could you address a concern that the Beatty towers apparently has more scooters than it has scooter parking space this semester. Visiting the campus last sat., I observed scooters (noon) parked in the allotted space like sardines, one scooter had been ticketed for parking on the white line even though it did not block the adjoining space. A roommate of my daughters brand new scooter had been damaged in the melee while unattended. I paid $170 for her to park on campus, not having adequate scooter parking at her residence is of concern, Maybe it's time for someone to re‐assess and add some additional space? Gail52: Thank you, Kris. I'll have her ask them for one. familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): Hi Ms. B, not an uncommon feeling. I know it seems to easy, but patience a good place to start. If they are involved, then they were start feeling more comfortable with going to student org meetings, and will soon feel right at home. University of Family Chat September 3, 2015 familychatmoderator(Advisor_Lynn): Hi folks, My name is Lynn and I am an academic advisor in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Academic Advising Center. I will be available to answer academic questions in an academics chat room. familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): hi t.bowman, it varies for every student. Some students will only talk to their family once a week, while other's will talk every day. Figuring out what your communication plan looks like, and then adapting based off of your son's needs takes time. dmpc1996: What can one do if roommates don't get along? My son has tried to talk to him, but it is useless. He is a 3rd year student. Mine is a 1st year. He is a slob, mine isn't. When asked a question, he answers in one word. Etc.....Put him on a room transfer, but doubt that will happen. [email protected]: I also noted that the outside garbage receptacles at Beaty on Sat., were overflowing with trash. Is this a common condition and if so why? Snickers618: If my student doesn't join in an organization right from the first meeting, is that the end of their opportunity? Can they jump in at any time?

Mbodz: Good afternoon all. I have 2 concerns that seem to keep showing up on social media groups. 1. Is there anything that UF can do to alleviate the problem of scammers on vending or laundry equipment? familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): Hi Rguidara, parking on campus (both car and scooter) can be challenging. Having a parking pass doesn't guarantee a spot, but does allow students/faculty/staff to park in designated areas. I would always encourage your student to park legally, so as to avoid getting a ticket. Report any damage that may have been caused by another vehicle. And seek alternative parking spaces if the desired space seems to full. There is additional parking on the north side of museum road across from Beatty Towers that your student may not have discovered yet. Mbodz: 2. The other concern is regarding the bus system. Seems as if they are not running as accurately as they should. When the day is a typical rainy Florida day ‐ how can students get to class without getting soaked? My son is in the Tolbert area and there are no covered locations to wait for a bus (closest stop is Gator dining). Any advice? dptak1: Any advice for how to handle the following situation. My son is having an issue with his roommate having a group of kids in his room until 2am, coming in at 3 in the morning after being out drinking, etc. My son has been ill for 3 weeks, is on his second round of antibiotics and really needs some rest. This violates their roommate agreement. Unfortunately the RA has on occasion been one of the kids in his room. My son has suggested they move somewhere else and he is ignored. The roommate is rushing and he's hoping things get better after this week. familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): Hi dmpc, if your student has tried talking to his roommate, and it doesn't seem to be working, the next step would be discussing it with their RA to see if they can help mediate a compromise. Selefante4: Good afternoon, I just logged in. Has there been any discussion about SNAP, yet? judyromano: Why does UF allow TAs that do not speak English proficiently? My daughter has a TA for Chem lab and one for Statistics lab. I'm sure both are very capable in their fieldbut they do not understand the questions my daughter asks and she does not understand their reply due to language. How is this advancing her education? dptak1: He's hesitant to discuss with his RA, since his RA wouldn't leave his room. familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): rguidara, as far as trash receptacles, I would not say it is a common occurance, although trash cans can get full on the weekends. Our Physical Plant department does a great job of keeping campus clean, but if your student ever has concerns about a specific area, I would encourage them to talk to Beatty Area Hall Director. dptak1: This is also happening every single night.

Main Lobby Family Chat September 3, 2015 familychatmoderator(Calvinm): Hi, my name is Calvin Mosley and I work in the Housing department. I can answer all your questions about housing in the housing chat room. Hello: My student has a TA would does not speak or understand English you have ti point familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): Hi snickers, typically yet, they can jump in at any time. Some groups have applications with specific deadlines, such as ambassador groups. But most will take new members at anytime. dptak1: Calvin, this is the only link I saw. Sorry I just signed in. Is there another link? familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): Hi mbodz, that is a great question. If your student has concerns about specific machines, there is always a contact number on each machine that they can call. If it seems to be a widespread problem, I would encourage them to contact the University Police Department (352‐392‐1111) so that they can investiage. judyromano: What garage are you referring to ‐‐‐ north of museum, across from beaty> judyromano: What type of decal do they accept? [email protected]: I expected the generic response that you gave, Don't want to sound negative, other than my two residential concerns which have not been addressed or forwarded for review, my daughter is enjoying her experience, loves her classes, has made friends at a sorority and also doesn't call home much unless prodded but I can understand her first experience with independence. We just stopped badgering her and now she has called two days in a row. familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): Mbodz, I would encourage your student to download the TransLoc app. Each bus has a GPS tracker, and the TransLoc app allows you to see where the bus is at in real time. This prevents having to wait outside, if the bus has just left, or is still a few minutes away. familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): Hi dptak, if speaking with the RA is not an option, then I would encourage your student to speak with their areas Hall Director. If they don't know this information, they can get it by going to the area desk. familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): hi selefante, welcome! No discussion on SNAP yet. Do you have a specific question regarding SNAP? Hello: what is SNAP? Selefante4: My daughter tried to use SNAP and could not get a ride; the wait was over 45 minutes. Do you know if the wait times have been shorter? familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): Hi Judy, all UF TA's go through English proficiency testing to both be UF graduate students and TA's. Your student can also always discuss their course questions with their individual instructor during their office hours. Hélène: Hi Kris, I do have a specific question about SNAP: my daughter is riding the bus on Monday night after spending the WE with us. She lives off campus but doesn't feel comfortable to walk home at night. What are her option? familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): Judy, for parking locations, you can review the UF Parking Map (http://www.parking.ufl.edu/pages/maps.asp) to see where different decals are allowed to park, and at what times. starfish: I have a new problem: it's called "Chat Anxiety" familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): Hi rguidara, it sounds like she is making a great transition! and that you all have figured out a good communication plan. Sorry to sound rehearsed in my responses. Those are important concerns. Hopefully she finds that they improve, and if it does not, please have her contact our office ([email protected]) to see if there are additional solutions we can assist with. tmwall1: Where do I park if I want to visit my daughter at UF? JETBOY: when is scholarship money going to be disbursed

Main Lobby University of Florida Family Chat September 3, 2015

tmwall1: Great question about when the scholarship money is going to be disbursed! I am also interested! familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): SNAP is Student Nightime Auxiliary Patrol. SNAP provides evening student shuttle services around campus (http://www.police.ufl.edu/community‐services/student‐nighttime‐ auxiliary‐patrol‐snap/). It can be a great resource to get back to a residence hall after a night class, an evening at the Library, or a late student org meeting. familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): selefante, wait times can fluctuate. Knowing that, I would encourage your student to request a SNAP ride before their actual desired time, in order to minimize their wait. familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): Hi Helene, riding the bus is typically the best option, particularly if she feels comfortable with her routes. I would encourage her to download the TransLoc app so that she able to see when the next bus may be arriving, and make plans to wait in a public space if she just missed the bus. familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): Hi starfish, welcome to the chat. Don't be shy. If you have questions, let us know and we'll get to them as soon as possible.

RHMgator: What is the best/most economical way to get to either the Gainesville or the Jacksonville airport? familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): Hi tmwall, it depends on when you're visiting. Most parking is lifted on the weekends, unless it is designated as a 24/7 lot (which will be posted). If it is during the week, the Reitz Union Parking Garage has all day parking for $5, or you can contact Parking and Transportation Services (Parking.ufl.edu) for a temporary visitor pass. Hélène: The pb is that the bus that drives her to her residence ends at 5pm on Sunday and (I think but not sure) on holidays judyromano: I had to step away ‐ I can not scroll to the top so I'm not sure if my question was answered already ...

UFTriD91: Is there ANYTHING that can be done about changing/converting the Unlimited Meal Plan? My daughter wasn't able to really use it until after the grace period and she's miserable ....living on salad and fruit....and I've been spending $100's on sending groceries so she can cook in her dorm and actually eat a meal she likes that's healthy. It's crazy bc we spent so much money on the food plan & all she can really use are the flex bucks (which are limited in amount and by time/day/location). Thanks. familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): Hi jetboy, I believe most scholarship money has been dispersed. If you student has questions/concerns about their aid, I would encourage them to contact their Financial Aid Advisor. They can find their individual advisors listed here (http://www.sfa.ufl.edu/contact‐sfa/) [email protected]: I want to sent my daughter a perishable package (edible fruit) to the dorm for her birthday .. is it possible? judyromano: My daughter has two TAs one for Chem lab and one for Statistics Lab ‐ neither speaks English proficiently ‐ they do not understand her questions and she does not understand their replies. I'm sure they are competent in their field but if there is a communication barrier ‐ how does my daughter benefit? familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): RHMgator, there is an RTS Bus (Gainesville's local bus system) that runs to the Gainesville airport. It is the number 25 bus, and you can find the route information on their website (http://go‐rts.com/). If your student needs to get to the Gainesville Airport when the bus is not running, it is about a $25‐$40 cab ride. Making a friend with a car is always a good option.

Main Lobby University of Florida Family Chat September 3, 2015 familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): RHMgator, to get to Jacksonville, they can always look into shuttle bus options such as MegaBus or RedCoach. catch a ride with a friend. Or visit the Jacksonville airport website to see if there are other shuttle bus options. tmwall1: judyromano‐my daughter had the same problem with her calc class, and she ended up dropping that course and switching to another one with an instructor that she could understand... familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): Hi helene, I'm sorry I'm not sure what 'pb' is? familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): Hi Judy, welcome back. We'll post the chat transcript after the chat has finished. Most likely next week. If you missed the answer to a question you asked, feel free to post it again. Hélène: Except the GMG bus, is there an other option for the students to go to Fort Lauderdale (other bus company, a car‐pooling association...)? Hélène: sorry Kris, "pb" means problem familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): Hi UFTriD, I'm sorry to hear that. If she has not done so already, I would encourage her to talk with Gator Dining Services (http://www.gatordining.com/) to discuss what her options might be, as well as if there are dining alternatives on campus that she's not taking advantage of. judyromano: What garage is available north of museum and across from Beaty? judyromano: What decal does the garage allow? dptak1: I've heard about 8 students whose debit/credit cards were skimmed, possibly from using vending or laundry machines on campus. Do you have any news regarding this? familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): Hi renee, that's a very nice idea. Yes, you can send packages your student's residence hall. You can find mailing addresses for the different residence halls through the UF Housing website (http://www.housing.ufl.edu/undergrad/choices/). familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): Hi Helene, a couple of other options you may want to look into include Red Coach, MegaBus or Greyhound. judyromano: My daughter is in Jennings. judyromano: Th familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): Hi judy, for parking locations, you can review the UF Parking Map (http://www.parking.ufl.edu/pages/maps.asp) to see where different decals are allowed to park, and at what times. judyromano: My daughter is in Jennings. The first Saturday ‐ the garbage truck came at 6:30am ‐ the second Saturday it came at 8:00am ‐ she is not a late night person but even that is early for a Saturday morning. Can that schedule be changed to a later pick up time? Hélène: Thanks Kris! familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): Hi dptak, I have not heard any recent news about this. Being aware of potential card theft is definitely something you should discuss with your student, both on and off campus. Monitoring bank accounts online, and reporting any potential theft to the local authorities is important. orangecityfl: My son tried to use his gator1 card and it wouldn't work with the washing machine in Cypress, and he has money in his vending account. Who should you contact? Snickers618: Just saw on the Parent Facebook that someone's card was skimmed for $491. Laundry in Trusler. I'm hearing way too much of this, too. I check my daughters Well Fargo account everyday! Not sure what cards are getting skimmed! familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): Hi Judy, I'm sorry to hear that. My guess is unfortunately probably not, but I would encourage your student to talk with their Hall Director/Area Coordinator to see if they know anything about the schedule and can suggest alternative pick‐up times.

Main Lobby University of Florida Family Chat September 3, 2015 dptak1: Thanks Kris. They are being reported to UF Police so I'm sure they are working on it. My son has been fortunate so far. I'm reading daily on our parent Facebook group about another incident. UFTriD91: Somehow lost my question about any possible options with the Unlimited Meal Plan. Sorry, all previous content disappeared. Did anyone have an answer? familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): Hi orangecity, I'm sorry to hear that as well. Your student should report it to the Cypress Hall desk. My thought is that it is an issue with the machine, rather than your student's card. If it is a card issue, your student should talk to Gator 1 Central (http://www.bsd.ufl.edu/G1C/vending/vending.asp).\ orangecityfl: Okay, thank you. dmpc1996: My son had and still is having problems with the washing machines in Cypress. Sometimes you need to swipe twice. I just keep checking it to make sure they don't charge him twice. Mbodz: That was my same concern ‐ Snickers and dptak1 ‐ skimmers and the laundry/vending machines. My son is aware and is paying attention to what devices look like. However, I was hoping to hear that a more active investigation was going on. Also ‐ his Gator1 card does not work on the laundry machines in Tolbert either. He uses his debit which makes me more nervous. familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): Hi Snickers and dptak, I know Arie has been monitoring the Parent Facebook page and assisting on this issue where she can. Continue monitoring bank accounts, and if we receive any news, we will be sure to post that information. dmpc1996: Another problem he is having is his Flex Bucks is being charged for meals instead of his All Access account. Parents, be aware of this too! judyromano: RE: Non‐English proficient TAs ‐ this is a ridiculous situation for an educational facility to allow ‐ what can be done? familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): Hi dmpc, that is definitely something to be aware of. I would make sure to contact Gator Dining (http://www.gatordining.com/) to discuss issues with Flex Bucks, if you have not done so already. judyromano: That was probably poor English ‐ should be... TAs who are not proficient in English ‐ what can be done? familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): Hi Judy, all of our TA's must go through English proficiency testing in our to be TA's and UF graduate students. dmpc1996: Kris, Yes we contacted Gator Dining already. My son has to go and fix it himself. Just make sure parents, that your child tells them it's All Access. orangecityfl: My son is having the same issue with his TA ‐ he can speak English, but his accent is so strong that it makes it very hard to understand him. [email protected]: Has there been any resolution to the fire alarms going off in Rawling Hall? familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): Hi dmpc, great advice! judyromano: That is not reassuring considering the lack of English proficiency being shown in these two classrooms. I would like the person doing the testing to be faced with an unfamiliar lab experimentinvolving volatile chemicals and ask one of these TAs for advice. They may reconsider the level of proficiency when the TA does not understand the question and the student does not understand the reply. Who do I speak to further about this? familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): Hi stanekd, I haven't heard about the fire alarms in Rawlings. I would ask that question within the Housing Chatroom. They may no more. judyromano: You are most accurate orangecityfl ‐ it is the accent that my daughter can not understand. familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): Hi judy, if your students has specific concerns regarding their classes, I would have them speak with their individual professors or the Department Chair.

Main Lobby University of Florida Family Chat September 3, 2015

UFTriD91: Apologies for asking again....is there Anything that can be done to covert/change/refund the Meal Plan? My daughter wasn't able to use it until after the Grace Period and she is hungry and miserable. She has the unlimited plan but it's actually very Limiting, as the meals are primarily in the cafeteria and she only like the salads and fruit there. I've been having to send her $100's so she can buy groceries and cook meals in her dorm. It's a great expense and burden and we are each unhappy. I totally understand the reasons for locking them into a plan after using it, but that period was way too short when you factor in Rush, etc., where they had no time to use it (instead getting fast food during their 1 hr or less breaks). So, are there ANY Solutions or Options for a hungry & miserable n judyromano: The professor is sarcastic and rude and is not an effective "instructor" ‐ I have heard him on ‐line ‐ so I doubt he will be helpful. I amvery disappointed in his lack of professionalism and teaching skills. So I wont bother approaching him. It is a chemistry class ‐ who is the Department Chair? I am certain we are not the only ones who have the concern for the TAs not communicating effectively‐ why is this allowed? Elizabeth_b: Just a quick question regarding the card skimming. Sorry if this has been discussed previously. Can we be certain that the ATM machines inside the Reitz are checked daily? familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): Hi UFTriD, unfortunately I'm not aware of specific solutions other than contact Gator Dining (http://www.gatordining.com/) to discuss. If you would like to e‐mail your students information to me ([email protected]) I can investigate further and follow up with you if there are any options. patricia3201: Not sure if this fits into today's discussion ! How soon can an exploratory major be changed? UFTriD91: Thank you Kris. I will email you. Elizabeth_b: Also are students being warned about the card skimming incidents and what they should be aware of when using a vending machine on campus? juanacubillas: My son lives on atriple dorm. Since he was the last one moving in, he could not pick anything; he does not even have an empty outlet. Does anybody go and make sure every student has an equal share of everything on the room? rhoelscher: Speaking of meal plans, I just want to share a perspective from my son (second child at UF; daughter graduated UF in 2014). Not sure if other parents are hearing anything from their kids. My son is disappointed in the variety of foods available and the attitude of the staff. I recommended he submit a comment card. He says he has, but that nothing has changed. Perhaps other parents are hearing this and the Admissions Office can relay the feedback to the vendor? familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): Hi ElizabethB, unfortunately I am unaware of how often individual ATM's are checked. I would encourage you to discuss with your student how to practice safe spending habits, and if you have concerns about specific machines or potential card theft, I would report them to the University Policy Department (352‐392‐1111). familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): Hi Judy, you can find contact information for the Chemistry Department through their website (chem.ufl.edu). familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): Hi Patricia, in order for a student to change their major from exploratory to something different, they will have to speak with an academic advisor for the major/college they would like to change to. Contact information for the various academic advising units can be found here (http://www.ufadvising.ufl.edu/).

Elizabeth_b: So as I understand it, the students are not being informed that the actual dorm laundry rooms they are using have had issues with card skimmers in them and their accounts may have been compromised?

Main Lobby University of Florida Family Chat September 3, 2015

familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): Hi Juana, if your student has concerns about the division of space within their room, I would encourage them to first talk with their RA to see if there is a compromise that can be reached amongst the roommates. That's if they have not yet discussed it with their roommates themselves. [email protected]: A note on the unlimited meal plan, I was also unhappy about how limiting the "unlimited Plan" was. The students have to be aware of where they can use the plan outside of the two dining halls. My son says the lines for food he wants are sometimes long and he doesnt have tim to wait. He has been finding alternatives that are covered you just have to be sure to purchase the several "meal plan combos" or you will be charged from your flex dollars. Not always what the kids want. Also there are some places where they can order anything they want up to $6.00 then any balance will be taken from flex dollars. If you call dining services they will explain waht the options are for each dining option in detail. Otherwise he would have been flying through his flex dollars and wasting his dining plan m Elizabeth_b: Yes, I have informed my daughter and she is only using the Gator 1 card which is NOT connected to Wells Fargo but is simply a vending account. I am concerned about other students who use a debit or credit card for everything. familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): Hi rheolscher, filling out a comment card is a great suggestion. If he has specific feedback, feel free to send that to me ([email protected]) and I will be sure to share it with my colleagues within Gator Dining. familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): Hi Elizabeth, it's possible that a message has gone out from the Housing Department. I would encourage you to ask a question within the Housing Chatroom. familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): Hi dinaiovino, that is great insight and suggestion. Thank you for sharing! dptak1: Elizabeth_b, the laundry room is just one theory as one student said they only used their card at the bookstore and in the laundry room. Hopefully it is being investigated. [email protected]: Can you advise if the Infirmary/Clinic on campus is open on the Weekends? [email protected]: Hi Kris , my son joined the Tae kwon do club but the activities ends very late, could he call the Snap Service, until what time can he call? UFTriD91: Thank you @[email protected]. My daughter has really been miserable. She HATES to ask for money and was almost in tears over needing needing groceries and from feeling sick due to poor nutrition/skipping meals. familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): Hi jill, the Student Health Care Center is only opened Monday‐Friday 8‐5. There are several CVS pharmacies close to campus, as well as the ER at Shands/UF Health for emergencies after hours gsfernandez: Can the Gator 1 card be used at the bookstore and have the charges put on their student account or does the gator 1 card need to carry a balance to cover purchases made at the bookstore.? familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): Hi Audrey, SNAP runs until 3:00 a.m. during the Fall semester. You can find additional information on their website (http://www.police.ufl.edu/community‐services/student‐ nighttime‐auxiliary‐patrol‐snap/) familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): Hi gs, unfortunately the Gator 1 Card must carry a balance to cover purchases. It acts more like a debit card than a credit card. [email protected]: Do you know if there's a bus transportation from UF straight to Miami?

Main Lobby University of Florida Family Chat September 3, 2015 [email protected]: Is there anyone from the Venice/Sarasota/North Port area that is interested in ride sharing for a weekend trip home? I was told there is a rideshare facebook page specifically for each area but my son hasn't checked that out yet. We are new to the venice area and my son has not met anyone from this area yet. If so we could exchange email info and possibly save one of us a trip up or back sometimes over the next few years. [email protected]: Kris, I'm so surprised with a University the size of UF that their is no health clinic available on the weekends for the students. Most of the students don't have cars so getting to a CVS Pharmacy can be difficult. My daughter did go to Shands ER on evening and waited 7 hours to be seen. I think the clinic needs to have weekend hours. familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): Hi Audrey, there are several companies that pick up on campus and run to South Florida, included GMG, Red Coach and MegaBus. There is also Greyhound Bus station in town. gsfernandez: is there a recommend taxi company for UFstudents to call to get to Gainesville Airport? [email protected]: Thank you Kris. gsfernandez: When do the students need to leave the dorm for Winter Break and how soon can they return to the dorm? familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): Hi Jill, the two closest CVS's to campus are on the corner of SW & SW 34th St. (northwest corner of campus). There are multiple bus routes that run to these stores and your student can find the routes here (go‐rts.com). I will definitely share your feedback regarding weekend hours. familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): Hi gs, unfortunately I don't have a specific cab company to recommended, but the fair from campus to the Airport should be about $25‐$40. Additionally, the number 25 bus runs to the Airport from campus during the day. gjkoontz: Is there a schedule for Family weekend in October? We are out of stater Gators, and are trying to finalize flight arrangements [email protected]: Thank you Kris. familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): gs, Spring move‐in begins on Jan.3. Students can move in prior if they have scheduled an appointment. They will have to do a check‐out appointment with an RA before they leave for the winter. There RA can review all of this information with them. dptak1: Jill, my son (unfortunately) has already been to the CVS on Archer Rd. and to Care Spot Urgent Care on 2nd Ave. He got excellent care at both locations. Tip: CVS can no longer treat you if you have been ill, for example coughing, for more than 3 weeks. gjkoontz: For the cabs, there is an APP that a student may download called UBER, they are all over the world. It picks up your location from the cell phone to have a taxi driver available and bills to cc familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): Hi gj, great question! You can find all the information, including schedule and cost, for Family Weekend on our website (https://www.dso.ufl.edu/nsfp/families‐nsfp/family‐ weekend/fall‐2015/). gsfernandez: Thank you Kris and also gjkoontz on the cab info. patricia3201: UBER is a great service for the students. gjkoontz: Do you know if there is a long appointment list for the dog therapy if my student needs to have some doggie time beside the "Yappie hour"? There is a class conflict for the time period on Wednesdays. UFTriD91: I Have to know...what is doggie therapy and where can my child get some? ¿¿ LaurieR: Sorry, I signed in late. Is there a place online that parents can find out when classes end for Thanksgiving? Have to figure out flights from JAX to the north... UFTriD91: All the calendars are on the UF website, as well as available in ISIS and on my.ufl.edu

Main Lobby University of Florida Family Chat September 3, 2015 familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): Hi gj, that is a great question. I'm not positive, but I would have your student contact the Counseling & Wellness Center (352‐392‐1575). There are also several volunteer opportunities within the community, such as Puppy Hill Farms and the Humane Society, which could be good alternatives as ways to give back and be around animals. Joshua: where can i find a list of clubs that are offered at uf? LaurieR: Thank you! and thanks to everyone at UF who goes above and beyond with things just like this to help parents and new students navigate their first year! UFTriD91: ¿¿¿¿¿¿ familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): Hi josh, UF has over 1000 student organizations. Your studentcan find a comprehensive, and searchable, list on Gator Connect (https://ufl.collegiatelink.net/) which is like Facebook for student orgs. dptak1: Thank you Kris for your advice and responses. We appreciate you very much! familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): UFTrid, doggie therapy is a program run through our Counseling & Wellness Center. You can find information through their website (counseling.ufl.edu). I have my own dog (and cat) at home and can attest, a little pet therapy can go a long way :) [email protected]: Also @UFTriD91, there is a home cooked meal every tuesday night at the catholic Church on University Avenue. Called the Newman Club, part of the Catholic Gators. My son went this week and said it was very good. All are welcome. Will give her one meal a week she doesnt have to cook. familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): We have about 5 minutes left in today's chat. Please feel free to ask any last minute questions you might have juanacubillas: Are the students supposed to empty outtheir dorms every time the semester ends? familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): Hi Juana, if your student is living in the same room both Fall and Spring semester, then they do not have to empty out their room. There are check out procedures they have to complete in between terms, but they can leave their belongings in their room. juanacubillas: Thank you so much, Kris! patricia3201: Thanks Kris for the very informative information. familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): That concludes our chat for today. Thank you everyone for your great questions. Special thanks to Calvin and Lynn for running our Housing and Advising Chat Rooms. Also special thanks to Arie Gee, our Assistant Director for Family Engagement, for setting up the chats. We will post the transcript for the chat in the coming weeks. And know that you can e‐mail your questions at anytime to our e‐ mail account [email protected]. Thanks again! And Go Gators!

Online Family Chat ‐ Academic Advising Thursday, September 3, 2015

Snickers618: When do you think is the best (and earliest time) my student should visit her advisor? Decker: Do students have an assigned advisor ? my son tried to schedule a meeting and was told it was a week till he could get in to see someone...anyone.. familychatmoderator(Advisor_Lynn): Hi folks, Sorry I just got logged in. Will answer your questions now. usr60: Mydaughter is feeling completely overwhelmed by the advanced classes she's signed up for, I told her to talk to an advisor but can't schedule till next week. Snickers618: How often should a student connect with their advisor? familychatmoderator(Advisor_Lynn): @Snickers ‐ As long as your student feels she is adjusting well, she can wait until October to meet with an advisor. Advance registration for Spring begins in late October and goes through the first several weeks of November, but she will want to meet with her advisor early, touch base about how things are going and talk about her spring schedule. Once mid‐October hits, we have alot of traffic for advising and students end up waiting, so coming in early is good. familychatmoderator(Advisor_Lynn): @Snickers, if before then your student is unsure of anything academic or isn't doing as well as she hoped, she should meet with an advisor sooner. familychatmoderator(Advisor_Lynn): @Decker, that depends on your student's college. What college/major is your student pursuing? Decker: Finance

Sarangma: Hi , my son is a freshman and he is in honor program. How soon he can register springs term? familychatmoderator(Advisor_Lynn): @usr60, that is not uncommon since while most of our students have taken college‐level courses before, if they took AICE/AP/IB, the pace is alot faster since those courses were completed over the course of a whole year and our courses are 15 weeks long. I would definitely recommend a meeting with an advisor since it may just be a matter of adjusting to the expectations at UF and trying new study strategies. What major is your student pursuing? msbhayes: Hello‐Student's are not followed by an Academic Advisor unless they approach? I know the Athletes are assigned an advisor but my student isn't an athlete? Sarangma: And also, does he need to see advisor to get approval before he register Springs term? The reason I ask is some classes are filled up so quick. usr60: Biology, currently enrolled in Chem2 & Calc2 familychatmoderator(Advisor_Lynn): @Decker, here's a link to Business' advising page ‐ students are assigned an advisor by major. I don't know how busy they are in that office right now as far as appointments. They do have quick advising (see their page), but that is quick question at their front desk and maybe your student isn't comfortable with that. familychatmoderator(Advisor_Lynn): @Decker http://warrington.ufl.edu/undergraduate/myheavener/advising.asp familychatmoderator(Advisor_Lynn): @Snickers ‐ I prefer once a semester ‐ a month or so before advance reg. That's as long as all is going well.

Academic Advising University of Florida Family Chat September 3, 2015 familychatmoderator(Advisor_Lynn): @Sarangma, Registration begins at the end of October. All students will receive an email in early October with their registration start time. Honors students get the benefit of registering for a couple of courses early in the reg period and then completing their schedules when their start time arrives. gator mom 2: Thanks, Lynn, for this info! familychatmoderator(Advisor_Lynn): msbhayes, that depends on your student's college/major. Some colleges have assigned advising and some colleges don't. Here in Liberal Arts and Sciences we have a student:advisor ratio of nearly 800 to 1 so we don't assign students, we let them see the first available advisor. Students may request to see that same advisor and many do, but they don't have to. Snickers618: Why is it required to take 9 credits during summers over their UF career? Snickers618: Heard that Study abroad would cover all 9 credits? familychatmoderator(Advisor_Lynn): @Sarangma, again it depends on the student's college/major. Some colleges have mandatory advising, others don't, although we all require students who are not progressing well (based on past semesters' grades, whether they are in the right courses, etc.) to meet with an advisor before registration. chrisw1211: Lynn, my daughter is wanting to do a double major (History/Political Science). She's also interested in the 4+1 Masters program. She's a strong student, but I'm concerned that she may be biting off more than she can chew. At Preview they weren't able to provide much guidance, and I'm wondering how early she should get in to see an advisor to make sure she stays on track. Sarangma: Thanks Lynn. Actually my son is in Liberal Arts and Sciences so he doesn't has to see advisor to register Springs term unless my son wants to. familychatmoderator(Advisor_Lynn): @usr60, I would have her talk to her math and chem professors ASAP. Those classes meet three days a week and the profs can try to help her understand if she is in over her head or if she has the right background and needs to adapt. If she asked specifically for a Biology advisor, then she may not be able to get an appointment til next week (we have 1300 Biology majors). BUT here in the AAC, we advise all CLAS freshman and her concerns are more common frosh concerns than Bio‐specific, so she could come and see us as a walk‐in. Here's the link to our walk‐in info. The wait has averaged less than 10 minutes pretty much all day, but lunchtime tends to get backed up so I recommend coming in before 11 or after 2. familychatmoderator(Advisor_Lynn): @gator mom 2 ‐ you're welcome :‐)

UFTriD91: My daughter is in IA & intends to be Pre‐Med/PreHealth (on to UFCOM for MD on forensic pathology) so she chose the CLAS Biology major & she had a negative experience during Preview Advising. Then a # of older premed/PreHealth students told her that the IA program is absolutely not set up for premed & she would need lots of specialized Advising & assistance to carefully plan her pre‐Rec's and course schedule each term, They also said she'd be spending a Lot of time at Santa Fe doubling up on pre‐Rec's, etc., which IS something the Advisor told her at Preview. 1). Who does she see for this type of Advising, IA, CLAS, PreHealth or other? 2). Is there any specialized help for students on this track in IA? 3). Are there any campus resources (other than AMSA) where she can get help, info, suppo familychatmoderator(Advisor_Lynn): @Snickers ‐ that is a State of Florida regulation, not a UF rule or reg. The State wants the Universities fully utilized all year round. Students can meet it by taking 9 credits at any of the public state universities in Florida (not state or community colleges), which includes online coursework (i.e., they don't have to be in Gainesville to take UF coursework), internship credit at UF though internship can be elsewhere, and study abroad through UF.

Academic Advising University of Florida Family Chat September 3, 2015

familychatmoderator(Advisor_Lynn): @Snickers ‐ here are the rules on study abroad and the summer requirement, sometimes students can meet the 9 hours with 6: However, students who earn six credits through UF‐sponsored, UF exchange or approved SUS study‐abroad programs during one or two summer terms completely satisfy the summer‐term enrollment requirement. In addition, credits earned through any of the study‐abroad programs approved by UF during a summer term count toward satisfaction of the summer‐ term enrollment requirement. Students who bring 60 or more transfer credits to UF, regardless of institution, will be exempt from completing the summer requirement at UF. https://catalog.ufl.e familychatmoderator(Advisor_Lynn): Link didn't paste https://catalog.ufl.edu/ugrad/current/regulations/info/graduation.aspx#summer

Snickers618: Thanks! We are out of state‐who would my student speak with regarding internships in Delaware? familychatmoderator(Advisor_Lynn): @chrisw, fortunately, while she can plan all that, she won't be approved for these programs til she has established that she is capable of handling them. So for the double major, she'll need to meet the Term 5 tracking requirements and have a 3.0 UF GPA before she can be approved. For the combined degree, I think she has to have completed her sophomore year. So this is a great time for her to test out these plans and see if they are really a good fit. She should talk to an advisor in early October so we can gauge how she is doing inher courses and a plan to test out her goals and get on track for them if they are the right thing for her. Sarangma: My son wants to get some volunteer experience in the medical field, does UF has this kind of experience for freshmen ? Or some kind of research experience ? UFTriD91: @Sarangma ‐ Have you seen/joined the PreHealth LISTSERV? Those opportunities are posted all the time (though very few for freshmen). familychatmoderator(Advisor_Lynn): @UFTriD, IA and Biology preprofessional are a challeging combination. Some students do work it out only in Spring‐Summer, others who maybe placed in lower courses (and need longer sequences) or who drop classes, etc.) do end up taking Fall courses at another school. She absolutely should meet with a Biology advisor here in the AAC ‐ we work individual with all IA Biology majors beginning in December before they register for their first term. Once on campus, they'll help her make a semsterly plan. She can come and see us this fall, as long as she comes before mid‐October when we get crazy with current students. familychatmoderator(Advisor_Lynn): Hey folks, thought I posted the Liberal Arts and Sciences Advising contact info, but it looks like the link didn't paste https://www.advising.ufl.edu/advising/advisingservices/ familychatmoderator(Advisor_Lynn): @Snicker, your students should start working early with our Career Resource Center (www.crc.ufl.edu).

JanCyn: My daughter is taking Intro to Chem on line. How can she meet a professor to build a relationship? familychatmoderator(Advisor_Lynn): @Sarangma, if you look on our Prehealth advising page ‐ we have alot of information about community service and shadowing for prehealth students. https://www.advising.ufl.edu/pre‐health/apply/prepare/ familychatmoderator(Advisor_Lynn): @UFTriD, good call, Sarangma's student should definitely get on the listserv. UFTriD91: Thank you @Advisor_Lynn. I will have her come in NOW, lol. Is there any particular advisor who has kind of "specialized" in this challenging track for IA that she should make a specific appointment to see while things aren't busy? familychatmoderator(Advisor_Lynn): @JanCyn, I believe the professor has in‐person office hours posted on her e‐learning site, so she can go to office hours and ask questions, etc.

Academic Advising University of Florida Family Chat September 3, 2015

JanCyn: Thank you. Gail52: How does a student go about taking summer classes at another FL state university? Do they have to apply to that university to be accepted? Does the class have to be approved by UF? Sarangma: I am sorry. What is LISTSERV? familychatmoderator(Advisor_Lynn): @UFTriD, we have three advisors who specialize in Biology and work individually with IA students. If your student calls or comes by to make an appointment, the only thing she needs to specify is that she is IA. Normally, all advisors in our Center work with first‐year Biology students, but since IA scheduling can be tricky, first‐year IA Bio majors will meet with one of the three BIO advisors. familychatmoderator(Advisor_Lynn): @Gail52, students submit a transient form via the Florida Shines website to be approved by both schools. It's best if the student talks to their UF advisor before submitting (so usually late Feb or early March). Each college/major can have rules about what can or should be taken elsewhere.

UFTriD91: @Sarangma ‐ it is basically a message board that you can join which will email you announcements, notices, and other information related to that topic. There are thousands of topics. This one is for UF PreHealth. familychatmoderator(Advisor_Lynn): @Sarangma ‐ here's the link https://www.advising.ufl.edu/pre‐ health/services/pre‐health‐listserv/ Sarangma: Ok, thanks your info. It was very helpful. gator mom 2: This is my second gator and these chats are always super helpful. Thank you for your time, and setting up the various chat rooms for specific topics is brilliant! Very much appreciated!! Thanks!! :) familychatmoderator(Advisor_Lynn): Hi folks, I have to sign off at 3 (SORRY), but if you have further questions, my email address is [email protected]. Or you can look to see who your student's advisors are at: http://www.ufadvising.ufl.edu/advisers.aspx familychatmoderator(Advisor_Lynn): Can take one or two last questions... msbhayes: Thank you for taking time out of your day!!!! Gail52: Thank you, Lynn. usr60: Lynn, if professor thinks my daughter is not as prepared for Calc 2 as ALEKS indicated, would she be able to switch to Calc 1? Snickers618: Thanks, Lynn! Learned a lot today :) familychatmoderator(Advisor_Lynn): All, it's been my pleasure. I am normally on for the full time of the chat, just had a previously scheduled meeting today. UFTriD91: Thank you Lynn familychatmoderator(Advisor_Lynn): @usr60. ALEKS does not place students in Calc 2, your student needed to have credit for Calc 1 already through AP, dual enrollment, etc. She should talk to the professor and then to the Math department if they think Calc 2 is too advanced. That department would need to make the call on moving her to Calc 1. usr60: She did familychatmoderator(Advisor_Lynn): She did what? usr60: get credit for Calc 1 AP, I'll have her talk to the professor, thank you familychatmoderator(Advisor_Lynn): OK ‐ yes have her talk to them, if they allow changes (which is not guaranteed), it's usually by the end of the second week of class. familychatmoderator(Advisor_Lynn): Take care all! Thanks for supporting your students. I have a freshman at another institution, so I know how it feels to be in your shoes. familychatmoderator(Advisor_Lynn): I'm closing the chat room. The Lobby can still host basic advising questions as Kris used to be an advisor in our office and is still quite knowledgable.

Academic Advising University of Florida Family Chat September 3, 2015

Elizabeth_b: Is this an active room at this time? familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): Hi Elizabeth, unfortunately our academic advisor could only join us for the first hour. You can ask advising questions in the lobby, and if I'm unable to answer them, I can refer you to someone who will be able to.

Online Family Chat ‐ Housing and Residence Education Thursday, September 3, 2015

JanCyn: Hello, my daughter is a freshman. She is in the Murphree area. From my perspective; I think it is isolated for a new student. [email protected]: I know there has been problems with the fire alarm in Rawlings. Do you know if the situation is being looked at? familychatmoderator(Calvinm): JanCyn...Murphree is one of our most popular residential areas. Great community. Why do you feel it is isolated for a new student? familychatmoderator(Calvinm): We are aware of the problem at Rawlings and we have our maintenance team on it trying to fix the problem. We are very sorry that the alarm keeps going off. Hello: Are the RA in the dorms only there for safety or are they suppose to be getting these freshman together so they are not so isolated. JanCyn: It is a wonderful area, but as a first time mom of a college student; I wonder if she's missing out on meeting other students. familychatmoderator(Calvinm): RA's are there for safety as well as community development. The should be doing programming to get the residents to meet each other and form bonds. [email protected]: My concern with the alarms is that students are sleeping through the alarm or not leaving the dorm...cause they think it is a 'false alarm.' Wonder if there is a real fire? They could have the same attitude. familychatmoderator(Calvinm): JanCyn: I can assure you that she will not miss out on meeting other students. Murphree is one of our most social areas. Please tell your daughter to be on the lookout for flyers advertising programming information and information from her area government about social programs they are doing as well. Hello: The RA are not nothing...very disappointing... JanCyn: I will. Thank you! familychatmoderator(Calvinm): Bettekrakau: I have the same concern. However, once again we are working to fix the problem and stress to each of the residents the importance of getting out of the building if the alarm sounds. familychatmoderator(Calvinm): JanCyn: My pleasure. I really think your daughter will be pleased with the Murphree Area. familychatmoderator(Calvinm): Hello: Which residence hall does your student live in? Hello: Jennings and this summer Reid Nothing from either RA familychatmoderator(Calvinm): Hello: I am sorry about that. Which floor do they live on (If you don't mind me asking). I plan on reaching out to the Graduate hall Director to follow up. [email protected]: I would like to be candid and say that it is not being stressed to all residents to leave the building when the alarm sounds. I know from residents as well as reading the comments on the UF Parents 2019 facebook page that students are not getting out of bed and leaving the building. I think there needs to be more communication and signs etc about the situation. RA's need to be active in the communication. It is a safety concern in Rawlings. Hello: 2nd familychatmoderator(Calvinm): hello: I will follow up. familychatmoderator(Calvinm): Bettekrakau: I can assure you that we are following up with residents about the situation. We are not just sitting by and not being active about it. We will definitely increase our communication about the issue.

Housing and Residence Education University of Florida Family Chat September 3, 2015 [email protected]: I know you are not sitting by ‐‐ I am being straightforward with you and sharing that communication can be enhanced. Thank you. Mbodz: Hi. My question is about maintenance The vents in my son's room are very dirty so the air seems to lead to a lot more sore throats and sniffles. Who can we contact about getting it cleaned? familychatmoderator(Calvinm): bettekrakau: Thanks and I appreciate your input. familychatmoderator(Calvinm): Mbodz: he will need to put in an iservice to have his vents looked at. Go to www.housing.ufl.edu and at the top of the page there will be the words iservice desk. Click on that and your son will be able to put in the issue with his room and someone will come and take care of it. Mbodz: Thank you Calvinm familychatmoderator(Calvinm): Mbodz: no problem. you are most welcome. dptak1: Need advice. My son's roommate is having friends over nightly until 2 am, then going out drinking and he is coming back at 3 or 4 in the morning making no effort to be quiet. The kids aren't leaving the room after he has nicely asked if they can move somewhere else. This violates their roommate contract. Unfortunately the RA has on occasion been hanging out in the room also. My son has been very ill and really needs to get some sleep. familychatmoderator(Calvinm): Dptak1: I am so sorry your son is having to deal with this. I am assuming your son has talked with his roommate about this. In lieu of the RA on occasion being in the room also My advice would be to have your son go talk with the Graduate Residence Director about the issue. They will be able to talk with the RA and work to get this issue solved. dmpc1996: Do the students get first chance to get the same dorm for next year? dptak1: Thanks Calvin. He has talked to his roommate. Before rooming together they talked on FB and seemed like a perfect fit. Now the other boy has a taste of freedom. Hopefully things calms down soon. I will recommend what you suggested. Thanks! familychatmoderator(Calvinm): Dmpc1996: in short yes they will. Re‐contracting should begin later this fall semester. Your student will receive an email stating when the are able to re‐contract. Then you should submit your contract and advanced rent payment by the due date to guarantee a housing space. familychatmoderator(Calvinm): Dptak1: No problem. With these situations sometimes you have to let them play out a little bit. Hopefully they will calm down but if they don't please have him talk to his hall director. dmpc1996: Can you go from a double to a single room? I suppose only if available? Mbodz: When you say ‐ next year for their dorm room. Are you talking about next semester? familychatmoderator(Calvinm): Mbodz: No I am referring to next fall semester. The contract they signed is for an entire academic year. familychatmoderator(Calvinm): dmpc1996: You are correct. They can do that only if a space is or becomes available. gator mom 2: Hi Calvin, if they want to keep the same room in the same dorm for next year is that possible? I see they can re‐contract for the same dorm. That's great...what about the same room. If they are planning on staying for summer classes also, then it would be super convenient if they want to keep their room. :) familychatmoderator(Calvinm): Gator mom 2: that is possible. They should also be able to re‐contract for the same room. During the summer, depending if that residence hall is open for summer school it is possible that they can stay there as well. dmpc1996: Hopefully my son can keep his same dorm, just get a better roommate next fall!!!!!! gator mom 2: That's great! Thanks, Calvin!! :)

Housing and Residence Education University of Florida Family Chat September 3, 2015 familychatmoderator(Calvinm): gator mom 2: No problem. Glad to see that you are already interested in your student staying with us again next year. gator mom 2: Which dorms are usually offered in the summer? familychatmoderator(Calvinm): It varies depending on summer projects. I have been here for two years now and it generally has been the following residence halls.Summer A: Lakeside Complex, Springs Complex, , Beaty West (for Innovation Academy Students) and Keys Complex. This year we will add our two new residence halls, Cypress and Infinity, to that list. Summer B: Hume East, East Hall, Murphree Hall, Beaty West (innovation Academy Students), Springs Complex,Lakeside Complex and once again Cypress and Infinity will be added to the list as well. gator mom 2: Tolbert area by any chance? familychatmoderator(Calvinm): Gator Mom 2: Yes. East Hall is in the Tolbert Area. Generally that has been the residence hall we have used during the summer in that area. gator mom 2: Thanks! :) familychatmoderator(Calvinm): Gator mom 2: No problem. dptak1: Calvin, in our Facebook parent group, I am reading daily about additional students who have had their debit/credit cards compromised. Many have only been used on campus including laundry areas. Would it be possible to check the laundry machines for skimmers? Several students have reported this to the UF police. Mbodz: What time of year can the students apply to be an RA next year? familychatmoderator(Calvinm): Mbodz: They will be able to apply beginning in a few weeks. We will start having information sessions in a few weeks and the actual interview process will start later in October. Have your student be on the look out for flyers publicizing the position. Mbodz: Thank you~ dmpc1996: What does the RA actually do, no disrespect intended. [email protected]: Hello, Can you please address my two comments in the lobby chat room with regard to Beatty scooter parking and trash issues. familychatmoderator(Calvinm): Dmpc1996: In short, the RA's job is to develop community on his/her floor by providing quality programming and other social/educational activities to get residents engaged and involved in the residence hall. They are also responsible for the safety and security of their floor/building. They serve in an on call rotation along with other RA's on staff. They are to assist residents in academic/personal matters and act as a referral agent to make students aware of other resources on campus. A full job description can be found at housing.ufl.edu/RA. dmpc1996: Thank you. Was wondering if my son would be interested in this. familychatmoderator(Calvinm): rguidara:Scooter parking(and parking in general) is a concern. Lots of students have scooters. My advice would be to email someone at Traffic and parking services about the issue. I have seen the scooter parking area and it is always crowded. I am sorry I don't have a better answer for that one. familychatmoderator(Calvinm): dmpc1996: I surely hope he is. We are always in need of good RA's. familychatmoderator(Calvinm): rguidara: to address the trash concern; Beaty towers has almost 800 residents and as you can imagine a lot of trash can get thrown away. The garbage trucks come do come once a day Monday ‐ Saturday.

Housing and Residence Education University of Florida Family Chat September 3, 2015

[email protected]: Thanks, the Beatty manager should address the obvious problem by getting with the parking dept. Why do parents need to address obvious issues when there are people who are suppose to manage all these areas of concern. There were plenty of empty parking spaces but absolutely no scooter parking, they need to expand the current scooter area a couple of spaces. Calvin it's common sense 101. No wonder parking writes $85,000 in tickets, instead of addressing the problem, they write cash strapped students and parents tickets, That's their answer. [email protected]: Calvin with regard to the trash, if there is commonly trash on the grounds during the weekend, maybe more or larger trash receptacles would help! dptak1: Calvin, thank you for all of your responses. You have been extremely kind and helpful. I appreciate it. familychatmoderator(Calvinm): dptak1. Thanks so much. My pleasure. familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): Hi everyone, we have about 5 minutes left in today's chat. Feel free to ask any last minute questions you might have. familychatmoderator(Calvinm): dptak1: I can definitely have that checked. (Sorry I didn't see your question earlier). I will contact our laundry service to have them check for this. dptak1: Great Calvin, thanks! My son has been lucky, but I feel badly for the others. gsfernandez: which housing laundry room did this incident occur? familychatadministrator(NSFP_Kris): That concludes our chat for today.
