(Animal component may comprises of pig or duck or poultry:any one as per the need assessment by respective KVK)

Technology Option 2: Fish farming/ grow-out carp culture in pond (without integration)

Technology Option 3: Poultry/ livestock farming as single enterprise (without integration)

34

Technology Option 4: Household horticulture/ fruit/ vegetable production (without integration)

D) Specifications for a unit under Technology Option 1

(Unit indicates a pond sized 0.10 ha water area with 1 m average water-depth) Note (As suggested by Director, ATARI): The pond size of 0.10 should not be constant. Director, ATARI encouraged to continue the OFT with existing pond, wherever, it is possible.

1. Fishery component: a. Hypothetical pond size: 0.10 ha b. Type of fish species to be stocked: IMCs (Indian Major Carps: Rohu, Catla & Mrigal) and ECs (Exotic Carps: Silver carps, Grass carps, Common carp) c. Stocking density of fish fingerlings: 1000 nos./ Unit (Surface feeder 30 %, Column feeder 40 % and bottom feeder 30 %) d. Choose either Catla or Silver carp as surface feeder for stocking (90:10 either way as per local demand, but avoid stocking 50:50) e. If multi-stocking and multi-harvesting technology is followed then stocking density is to be adjusted accordingly. f. Size of the fingerlings: 10 – 12 cm (must be larger for duck-cum-fish farming) g. Other management practices as per the recommendation of standard grow out culture of carps.

2. Piggery component: a. Pig variety: Yorkshire, Large white Yorkshire, Hampshire, Large Black or any other suitable variety as per recommendation of Animal Scientist of respective KVK. b. Nos. of pigs to be reared: 3-4 per unit (minimum 2 months old weaned piglets) c. Male Female combination must be kept to ensure sufficient piglet production (M1:F3) d. Pig sty and husbandry management as the guidelines for piggery management.

35

e. Waste outlet of the pig sty is to be connected to fish pond via a pit. This pit will serve as a store for excess wastes. A facility must be created so that the movement/ flow of waste towards the pond can be regulated as and when required. f. Other management as per recommendations for livestock husbandry (Piggery)

Note (As suggested by Director, ATARI): In case of selection of Pig variety, we may not get pure breed, therefore, we may think of cross breed of Yorkshire, Hampshire and Large Black Cross.

3. Duckery component: a. Duck variety: Khaki Campbell/ Indian runner/ White Pekin/ or any other suitable duck variety as per the recommendation of Animal Scientist of respective KVK. b. Nos. of ducks to be reared: 30 – 35 ducks per unit c. Fish seed to be stocked must be of minimum 15 cm in size (otherwise duck may engulf the seed). d. Other management as per recommendations for livestock husbandry (Duckery)

4. Poultry component: a. Can be done in two ways: one way is to install the coops directly over the pond surface so that the droppings falls directly into the pond, the other way to make deep litter in poultry coops and recycling it into fish pond. b. Poultry birds (broilers/ layers): 45 – 50 poultry birds per unit c. Other management as per recommendations for livestock husbandry (Poultry)

5. Horticulture/ Fruit/vegetable component: a. Pond embankment generally provides more than 200 m2 area and it accounts for 25 to 33 % of farm area. b. Among the fruits crops, Banana, Papaya, Arecanut etc. are best. c. If banana is planted, avoid the area very near to pond water, as it loses the soil.

36

d. Lemon and Guava are good fruits for growing on pond embankment e. Vegetables can be selected as per requirement of respective KVKs. f. Common carp, grass carp, tilapia species may be added during stocking in pond upto 5-7 %. g. Grasses, unused/ removed leafy portion of vegetables grown on pond embankment can be utilized as feed for grass carp h. Pond water may be utilized for irrigation purpose. i. Other management as per recommendations for fruit crops and vegetable production.

E) Technology Option 2, 3, and 4: are to be conducted/ recorded as practiced by the farmers in the locality

F) Data to be recorded:

1. Accounting value in Rupees for all the tangible/ marketable inputs and outputs of the production system

2. Opportunity cost (alternative use value in Rupee) of all the wastes that were not marketed but reused in the production system, for e.g. Value of poultry/ duck droppings used in the pond as manure or the droppings used as manure for fruit/ vegetable crops etc.

3. Opportunity cost (alternative use value in Rupee) of family labour not paid in cash.

4. Imputed value of all the items/ outputs that were utilized for household consumption, for e.g. imputed value of the eggs that were consumed by farming family

5. Annual replacement cost of the housing/ shed that were prepared for . For eg, the total cost of construction of Pig shed is Rs. 20,000/-, then the annual replacement cost of the shed would be Rs. 2000/- assuming the life span of the shed is 10 yrs.

6. Separate records must be maintained for the items which would be provided by the respective KVK as a partial support for the Trial.

7. Other cost and production data like cost and quantity of feed, lime etc., and production data like production of meat, egg, fish (both quantity and value).
