Ocurre que quienes han abordado el estudio de esta parte de la columna geológica normalmente lo han hecho desde la óptica de cada especialidad motivo por el cual muchas veces se han brindado conceptos o interpretaciones distorsionadas. Con el objeto de iniciar un debate sobre este tema, en noviembre de 1999 llevamos adelante una reunión de expertos en el Centro de Investigaciones del CONICET radicado en la ciudad de Diamante (Entre Rios). Para ello se hizo adelante un análisis comparativo y de correlación geológica tomando en consideración los sedimentos marinos y continentales que afloran en la región mesopotámica y del Uruguay. A partir de allí ,con los trabajos expuestos más otros que fueron invitados, iniciamos la tarea de compilar una serie de artículos destinados a compatibilizar las ideas sobre esta temática. El resultado queda expuesto en la presente obra y, naturalmente, los lectores encontrarán muchos puntos de concordancia pero también de discrepancia entre los autores, situación que no nos alarma ya que interpretamos que ello servirá como punto de partida para nuevas discusiones y debates. Desde luego también, que los artículos aquí presentados de ninguna manera agotan ni los temas ni las opiniones. La obra comprende trabajos referidos a la geología regional, paleontología y paleoambientes sobre las formaciones Paraná e Ituzaingó, ambas objeto del debate mencionado. Como interesante ejemplo no queremos dejar pasar por alto la circunstancia que la International Stratigraphic Commission (ISC) y la International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS), luego de varios años de debate, ambiciosamente definieron la Global Stratigraphic Section and Point (GSSP) en el metro 35 de la sección de Lemme-Carosio, en la provincia de Alexandría, cuenca del Pimonte en el norte de Italia. Allí no solo se fijaron las pautas bioestratigráficas sino que también las resultantes de la magnetoestratigrafía y geología isotópica (Steininger et al, 1997). Asimismo, entre los criterios están, por un lado, los que surgen de la información del nannoplacton y foraminíferos, sino que se los vincula con los que proporcio- nan los vertebrados terrestres, y estudios isotópicos. La precisión lograda en tan arduos debates permitieron lograr, para el continente europeo un alto grado de certidumbre que luego expan- dieron hacia Asia y Norteaérica. El ejemplo del Neógeno holártico, debería ser un desafío para comenzar una tarea similar en el hemisferio sur, que permita calibrar en un futuro no muy lejano nuestras secuencias sedimentarias junto a las de Antártida, Australia y Africa, con aquellas. ACEÑOLAZA1 Abstract.- THE PARANÁ FORMATION (MIDDLE MIOCENE), STRATIGRAPHY AND REGIONAL DISTRIBUTION: A regional- stratigraphical analysis for the Paraná Formation (Middle Miocene) is presented. This is based on historical data in the type localitiy and some other new sections done on several localities of Argentina. The Paraná Formation was deposited during an important transgression over the pampean and patagonian regions, close to the end of the Lower to Middle Miocene. The transgression covered most of central to eastern Argentina, reaching as far as the Andean and Patagonian border. Lime- stones, sandy to argillaceous facies with abundant fossils (molluscs, echinoids, trace fossils, foraminifera, conchostraca, fish and others marine vertebrates etc.) were developed, along the Uruguayan border to the westwards Entre Rios province, in Argentina. In several localities (El Cerro and Paraná city, Molino Doll, etc) the limestone levels do have reef barrier type structure. Some others do present sandy barriers (Cristamine quarry). The fauna and sedimentological characters have been interpreted to be representative of temperate to warm waters and show correlation with outocrops in Patagonia . Key Words: Miocene.

[email protected] ABSTRACT – SYSTEMATIC UPDATE AND PHYLOGENY OF THE PROTEROTHERIIDAE (MAMMALIA, LITOPTERNA) FROM THE “MESOPOTAMIENSE” (LATE MIOCENE) OF ENTRE RÍOS PROVINCE, ARGENTINA. A systematic update of the species of Proterotheriidae (Litopterna) from the “Mesopotamiense” of Entre Ríos Province (Argentina) is performed, and their phylogenetic relationships with other members of the family are tested. Brachytherium cuspidatum Ameghino is validated (considered nomen dubium hitherto) and a sexual dimorphism is proposed for this species. This idea is based on metric, but not morphological, differences among the specimens included in it, which is supported by a discriminant analysis. Neobrachytherium ameghinoi Soria and Proterotherium cervioides Ameghino are also valid, and Epitherium? eversus (Ameghino) is assigned to the genus Diadiaphorus. Detailed descriptions of the specimens are presented for each taxon, and their diagnosis are revised. Key words: Proterotheriidae, Ituzaingó Formation, Entre Ríos Province, systematics, phylogeny. Although glyptodonts were an important component of Cenozoic South American faunas, their early evolution and phylogenetic affinities within the order Cingulata (armoured New World placental mammals) remain controversial. In this study, we used hybridization enrichment and high-throughput sequencing to obtain a partial mitochondrial genome from Doedicurus sp., the largest (1.5 m tall, and 4 m long) and one of the last surviving glyptodonts. Our molecular phylogenetic analyses revealed that glyptodonts fall within the diver- sity of living armadillos. Reanalysis of morphological data using a molecular ‘back- bone constraint’ revealed several morphological characters that supported a close relationship between glyptodonts and the tiny extant fairy armadillos (Chlamyphori- nae).

[email protected] ABSTRACT – The South American Teiidae fossil record is restricted to the Cenozoic, and the most conspicuous remains were found in Early to Late Miocene of Argentina and Middle Miocene of Colombia and Peru, all represented by Tupinambinae lizards. Here, we describe a right fragmentary dentary and one dorsal vertebra collected in the Solimões Formation at the Talismã locality, situated on the Purus River, in the southwestern Brazilian Amazonia (Late Miocene). The material is tentatively conferred to the extinct genus Paradracaena. It represents the first record of lizards for the Neogene southwestern Brazilian Amazonia. Key words: Teiidae, Tupinambinae, Solimões Formation, Miocene, southwestern Brazilian Amazonia. RESUMO – O registro fóssil de Teiidae para a América do Sul é restrito ao Cenozóico. Os fósseis mais significantes são encontrados a partir do Mioceno inferior ao superior da Argentina e Mioceno médio da Colômbia e Peru, principalmente representados pelos Tupinambinae. Neste trabalho descreve-se um fragmento de dentário direito e uma vértebra dorsal coletados em sedimentos da Formação Solimões, na localidade Talismã, alto rio Purus, sudoeste da Amazônia brasileira.

SCHWEITZER Research Associate, Section of Invertebrate Paleontology; Department of Geology, Kent State University Stark Campus, Canton, OH 44720 ([email protected]) ABSTRACT Five previously undescribed decapod taxa have been collected from lower upper Miocene rocks of the Puerto Madryn Formation, Peninsula Valdes region, Chubut Province, Patagonia, Argentina. New species include Osachila valdesensis, Rochinia boschii, Romaleon parspinosus, Panopeus piramidensis, and Ocypode vericoncava. Chaceon peruvianus and Proterocarcinus latus are also reported from the unit, in addition to two indeterminate xanthoid species. Assignment of fossil taxa to genera within the Panopeidae Ortmann, 1893, is difficult due to the marked similarity in dorsal carapace characters among several genera. Panopeus whittenensis Glaessner, 1980, is herein referred to Pakicarcinus Schweitzer et al., 2004. The Puerto Madryn Formation exposed near Puerto Piramide contains three distinct Facies Associations (1-3), each associated with specific paleoecological and paleoenvironmental conditions, and which recur throughout the section and represent trangressive systems tract (TST) deposits and highstand systems tract (HST) deposits. Within Facies Association 1, near the base of the section at Puerto Piramide, three paleosurfaces containing invertebrate fossils in life position are exposed and have been carefully mapped in plan view.

NORTHERN SOUTH AMERICA SUMMARY Northern South America has prospective shale gas and shale oil potential within marine- deposited Cretaceous shale formations in three main basins: the Middle Magdalena Valley and Llanos basins of Colombia, and the Maracaibo/Catatumbo basins of Venezuela and Colombia, Figure IV-1. The organic-rich Cretaceous shales (La Luna, Capacho, and Gacheta) sourced much of the conventional gas and oil produced in Colombia and western Venezuela, and are similar in age to the Eagle Ford and Niobrara shale plays in the USA. Ecopetrol, ConocoPhillips, ExxonMobil, Shell, and others have initiated shale exploration in Colombia. Colombia’s petroleum fiscal regime is considered attractive to foreign investment. Northern South America EIA/ARI World Shale Gas and Shale Oil Resource Assessment For the current EIA/ARI assessment, the Maracaibo-Catatumbo Basin was re-evaluated while new shale resource assessments were undertaken on the Middle Magdalena Valley and Llanos basins. Technically recoverable resources (TRR) of shale gas and shale oil in northern South America are estimated at approximately 222 Tcf and 20.2 billion bbl, Tables IV-1 and IV- 2. Colombia accounts for 6.8 billion barrels and 55 Tcf of risked TRR, while western Venezuela has 13.4 billion barrels and 167 Tcf. Eastern Venezuela may have additional potential but was not assessed due to lack of data. Colombia’s first publicly disclosed shale well logged 230 ft of over-pressured La Luna shale with average 14% porosity.
