SPORT

WINTER TOURNAMENT WEEK 29 August – 2 September

Hockey Boys 1st XI Tournament week Rankin Cup / India Shield

The journey to this top tier tournament started last year at the Founders Cup tournament where we finished 2nd to qualify for the 2017 Rankin Cup / India Shield. The end of last season also saw the finish of HC hockey for some very strong players and our coach for the previous few seasons. This season we managed to secure the coaching services of Dharshan Naran and some fresh new 1st players. After a hard local season we headed off knowing the challenge was going to be huge. It was an awesome week in Hamilton with some amazing hockey on display. We got to play against some great teams as well as some of our local rivals. While the results didn’t always go our way the boys played hard and kept positive all week. Overall we finished 28th out of 32 teams competing. It was a great experience for our players to see the standard required to compete at this top level. It can only help improve their hockey. Massive thanks to all those involved in the 1st Boys Hockey season this year.

Koraunui Stokes Valley Community Hub are hosting a Brainwaves Trust presentation on Adolescence on 15th November. Teachers and staff, as well as parents and whanau, are welcome.

This is a fantastic opportunity to hear from the brilliant and well-respected Brainwaves Trust - for FREE! Learn about the latest research on something that concerns a lot of us, our Rangatahi. Concern about our young people is not new. Each generation is known to have concern about the generation following, but we are the first generation to understand the changes that happen in the adolescent brain. Recent research shows that there is a burst of neuronal activity in late childhood and adolescence that is linked with risk taking and impulsive, emotional behaviours typical of teenagers. Consistent, nurturing and positive early experiences grow resilient, empathetic and intelligent adults. Conversely adolescents in New Zealand relative to other developed countries have a high rate of social morbidity. This informative, entertaining presentation is for parents and whanau, but also professionals working with adolescents – school teachers and board of governors, youth workers, foster and care providers and families; corrections, CYFs, police, health providers and anyone else who has contact with teenagers. Brainwaves Trust’s information is entirely based on up-to-date scientific medical research. Their work is scientific and evidence based, the message is positive and important to our whole community. Topics include: - The implosive emotional decision-making of the teenage years - Risk taking from a different perspective - How decisions are made differently when peers are involved - Why teenagers' sleep patterns change - Impact of technology on teenagers - Understanding how alcohol and drugs affect the adolescent brain

Please let me know if you have any questions. The is a free presentation, but please register via the Facebook event: https://www.facebook.com/events/1733481270280145/?acontext=%7B%22ref%22%3A%223%22%2C%22ref_newsfeed_st ory_type%22%3A%22regular%22%2C%22action_history%22%3A%22null%22%7D
