Editors Notes

Sister Death has been a frequent visitor these last months as three more of our Sisters departed for God’s Kingdom; Maria Silva, Mary D. Sullivan and Roseda Cabral. Then, we had cause for joy as we celebrated the Silver, Golden, 60th, 65th, 70th and 75th jubilees.

During two weekends in June, Sisters in the USA Province were invited to join Mary of the Passion’s Journey in the Franciscan Way. It was a Pilgrimage that brought us together to encounter, personally and as a province the person of Mary of the Passion. Those present intensified their knowledge, understanding and love of Mary of the Passion.

Barbara Dopierala and Nzenzili Mboma prepared the presentations and the Liturgies. Participation in these week- ends was voluntary except for those Sisters with temporary vows but almost all Sisters in the province attended and participated. Each Sister found new insights and a deepening appreciation of Mary of the Passion and her legacy. They succeeded “in unearthing together the treasure they hold and recaptured its spirit and substance.”

Maria Silva, fmm In the Spiritual Notes of Mary of the Passion we read: (M. Caritas) “Simplicity is born of truth and purity is born of love. How can I describe this mediation which passed so quickly! I Born to Eternal Life think that I have received these two wings from Our Lady April 30, 2009 and that perhaps I have always had them. Above all, they were a gift from Jesus on the day of my vows (which I made well I hope) …” (NS: 39)

In 1949 Maria received the religious name of Maria Cari- Mary Delphine Sullivan, fmm tas—LOVE. Throughout her religious life Maria lived up (M. Robert Southwell) to this name of LOVE. For most of her life Maria worked in ministries where she gave of herself to others in a Born to Eternal Life spirit of love. She truly exemplified the gifts of simplicity May 1, 2009 and purity that our foundress, Mary of the Passion, treas- ured so much in her own life. When Maria was working with our sisters in St. Antoine Residence she brought these gifts to our sisters, other residents and to the staff. No matter where Maria was she was always open to all Rosalina Cabral, fmm that was to come. She had a great love and apprecia- (M. Agathangelus) tion of everyone with whom she came into contact.

Born to Eternal Life I think that we can agree that the wing of simplicity that is May 9, 2009 born of trust, and the wing of purity that is born of love, have safely transported Maria to the arms of her loving God.

Two weeks later Mary told me that they had bought a statue for us. She brought it to our house and would accept no money for it.

Our landlord (Kevin) offered to help us set it up se- curely. He decided cement would do the trick. After he finished we asked Fr. Mitch, my parish priest to bless the statue.

We chose a Saturday for the blessing. We invited the Zamoras, our landlord and his friend, and a couple who has always been kind to us to attend the blessing. Fr. brought his Book of Blessings and read a lovely blessing over our little saint. In Chamberino we had a terra cotta statue of St. Francis holding in his hands a basin with two birds perched on each side. This was in front of our house for many years. When we moved of course he came with us. He was a beautiful addition to the front yard in back of a planter that held cactus.

One day when I made my daily jaunt to pick up our newspaper from our driveway I looked at St. Francis and he was not there! During the night someone had taken him.

We felt the loss each time we looked at the empty place in our front yard.

One day I went by a parishioners’ house and saw a Santo (St. Francis) in their yard. Next time I saw the pa- rishioner (Mary Zamora) at church I asked her if she knew where we could buy a statue like hers. She told me that when she and her husband (Dan) would go to Santa Rosa they would look for the Santo for us. I told her to buy it and we would pay her. 5

This was a great experience that stretched my time, capacity and talent for teaching. I saw some visible fruits in spontaneous responses of the children at different moments of the year. Here are only a few stories:

—During one of the classes we were talking about God, how God is more than we can imagine. Some of the children were saying: He is Love, He is every- thing, He is our Father, and countless attributions to God were going on without questioning until some- one said: God is our Father and Mother. Mother??? A surprise voice of a seven and a half year old child exclaimed. At that moment I started to wander how to handle this dilemma. At the same time, the question proved not to be a dilemma at all. For one of the girls spontaneously said: You know, like Mother Earth. And, all the children said: Aaaaaaa, and the lesson went on. It took a woman to solve the problem.

—On the day of the First Communion the eight chil- dren were waiting in anticipation. However, then, Dominic went back to his bench with great solem- nity and knelt down with his face hidden in his hands. After a while, he straightened up and with a whisper said: ‘Now I know I have received Jesus into my heart’.

—After Mass we all went to the parish hall where Matthew opened all of his envelopes and counted 200 dollars all together. He shared the news with me breathlessly. So, I asked, what are you going to do with the money, are you going to open a bank account? ‘Hmm….’, Matthew started to respond. ‘Maybe’, and then continued, ‘you know money is important because we have to buy food and other things. But, today the most important thing was that Jesus came to my heart’. Without waiting for an answer, he went back to join his family at the table.

I have to say these eight children taught me a lot. At the end of the catechetical year each child wrote down or drew a picture on nine pieces of cloth. At the end, the pieces were sewn together and each child created her or his own quilt. A week before the First 8 EL PASO, TEXAS Afterwards she shared the cards and words spoken of her with us. However, due to the regulations, she was not able to enter the U.S. When this woman died, I was trying to console one of her grandsons (14 yrs. old) who was cry- ing. When I mentioned how his grandmother was now in the arms of God, he said to me: “I know that sister. I ‘m crying because I was never there for her. When she came to my house, I was always on the streets playing and now it is too late”. I was really touched by the wis- dom and honesty of this young boy.

On June 12, Sr. Beatrice left the Detention Center where she worked for 4 years. She will be truly missed not only by the detainees but also by all the staff where she has been lovingly known as ‘Sr. Bea”. Beatrice was tru- ly the voice for the voiceless, the hope for the hopeless and the compassionate sister for the stranger. She went beyond the call of duty to help each person she met there. She didn’t just “listen”, she “acted”. On her 9 last day, she was given a farewell party by the staff. JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS Other Jubilarians celebrated at another Eucharist later in the month.
