Thirty-eight cadets and midshipmen in the Departments of Military, Naval and Air Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology received some 50 awards and medals during the annual Military Day exercises in the M.I.T. Armory Tuesday, May 9. Following the awards presentation, all M.I.T. RCTC units were reviewed by M.I.T. and military dignitaries, including M.I.T. President Howard W. Johnson; Rear Roy S. Benson, USN, Commandant, First Naval District; Morris B. Mont- gomery, USA, Assistant Chief of , G-3, Fort Devens, Mass.; and Colonel Joseph H. Griffens, USAF, Assistant for Staff Support, Electronic Systems Division, L.G. Hanscom Field, Mass. The reviewing party included the heads of the Departments of Military, Naval and Air Science at M.I.T.: Lt. Colonel Jack R. Shields, USA; Robert E. Stark, USN; and George P. Gamache, USAF. ARCTC, from Kress Texas (General Lesley Groves Award); Lt. Stephen Metz, NRCTC, from Columbus, Ga. (Admiral Edward Cochran Award); and Cadet Lt. Colonel Herbert R. Schulze, AFROTC, from Carlsbad, Calif. (General James Doolittle Award). The United States Naval Institute Award went to Midshipman Lt. Metz. Professor of Military Science Awards were presented to Cadet 1st Lt. Philip Jhin, A3CTC, Cadet of Queens Village, N.Y.; Cadet PFC John B. Black, AROTC, of Tampa, Fla.; and Sergeant E-5 Christopher D. Thurner, of St. Marys, Ga. Cadet TSgt. Roy F. Quick, Jr., of Lynchburg, Va., received the Professor of Air Force Aerospace Studies Award. League Awards went to Midshipman Lt. j .g. Jay C. Sinnett, NRCTC, of Portland, Me., and Midshipman Lt. Carleton F. Bryant, III, NROTC, of Minot, Mass. Cadet Major Michael D. Hawkins of Hampton, Va., received the Air Force Times Award of Merit. Armed Forces Communication and Electronic Awards were presented to Cadet Major Richard A. Simpson, to Midshipman 1st Class Frederick A. Hottes, NRCTC, of Grand Legion Awards Junction, Colo., and to Cadet Lt. Colonel Schulze. Military Crder of the Loyal went to Cadet Major John W. Reynolds, ARCTC, of Lindenhurst, N.Y.; Midshipman Chief Petty Robert J. Trunek, NROTC, of Rio De Janeiro, Brazil; and Cadet 1st Lt. Gerald R. Guenette, Jr., AFROTC, of Salem, Mass. Reserve Officers Association Awards were presented to Cadet Major Simpson, Midshipman Lt. j.g. Bryant, and Cadet 2nd Lt. Paul L. Modrich, AFRCTC, of Raton, N.M. Recipients of the Sons of the American Revolution Award were Cadet Lt. Colonel McPherson, Midshipman Lt. Metz, Cadet 2nd Lt. Howard E. Evans, UI, AFROTC, of Fort Collins, Colo., and Cadet Private James R. Van Gaasbeek, A,1OTC, of York, Pa. (Washington-Franklin Medallion). Society of American Military Engineers Awards were presented to Cadet Major Simpson, General Excellence Cadet 1st Lt. Boxman, and Midshipman 1st Class Hottes. American Legion Awards went to Cadet Major Simpson, Cadet Lt. Colonel Michael D. Teter, AFRCTC (gold), of Freemont, Calif., Cadet 2nd Lt. Philip R. Turner, AFROTC (silver) of Cklahoma City, Ckla., and Cadet Captain Robert D. Wyatt, ARCTC (silver) of Stratford, Conn.
