These brooder enterprises will brood the day-old chicks for 4-week then sell these chicks to rural smallholders households to rear for egg and meat production.

:5: Kuroiler is a dual purpose hybrid chicken well adapted to local management under village conditions by smallholder and under this management will produce 200 - 260 eggs during a 12-month egg-laying period and gains weight faster compared to local indigenous chicken. Hens begin laying from 5-6 months. The cocks weigh at least 2 Kg at around three months, at which a smallholder farmer can sell for the meat.

The present breeder farm complex is comprised of four chicken houses with a total capacity of up to 12,500 layer chicken parent stock. There is also the office cold store and Farm manager's house. While the farm receives electricity for the national grid, it has standby backup 80KVA diesel generator to supply electricity whenever this power outage for the national grid. :15: The Business approach is in place to effective and efficient distribute day-old chicks and production inputs like feeds and vaccines through the Brooder or Mother Units Hub Model. The Brooder Units are a pivotal link between the target rural smallholder chicken farmers. For this reason, the Brooder( Mother) Units hubs are located close to the smallholder chick farmers as much as possible either at the village, ward or district level depending on the population of smallholder farm households. AKMG sells day-old chick to Brooder Units who will brood rear and then sell to small farmers 4-week old vaccinated chicks to reduce early mortality and reduce early losses on the farmers’ side.

With Brooder Unit model, AKMG significantly reduces high mortality (losses) of chicks in the first 4- weeks by ensuring that the chicks are brooded, reared and with appropriately vaccinated before being sold to smallholder chicken farmers or farmer groups. Brooder Units also serve as distribution hubs for production inputs such as chicken feed and other farm inputs. To ensure that Brooder Units Enterprises are gainful, AKMG invests in building technical, business development and financial literacy capacity of the mother Units to operate economically viable chick brooding enterprises.
