Sunny Isles Beach Tourism and Marketing Council is a partnership with the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau. © 2017 savvy information dear reader June 1 marks the frst day of the 2019 hurricane season. No one ever wishes for a natural disaster to impact their home, but we must be prepared. And the City of Sunny Isles Beach is. Tough living on a coastal barrier island provides us year-round recreation, this also makes us particularly vulnerable to weather events. However, through measures implemented by the City Commission and City Staf, Sunny Isles Beach is well-equipped should a hurricane or storm impact our area. Hurricane Irma in 2017 brought the frst major hurricane to afect our area since 2005. Luckily, we had procedures in place that allowed us to optimize recovery time and ensure the most efcient and safe clean-up. Our staf pulled together to re-open the City within days following the storm. Our George ‘Bud’ Scholl Police Department responded during and after the storm when conditions Mayor allowed them to do so safely. And our Public Works and Parks staf ensured a prompt recovery to the City’s infrastructure and aesthetic. But being prepared fnancially for a storm is just as important as physical reinforcements. Not only is our staf capable of extraordinary measures, but our budget has carefully allocated emergency funds for such incidents. With more than $25 million in funds for hurricane/emergency and disaster recovery, the City is fnancially armed to combat any disaster that may breach Larisa Svechin Dana Goldman our boundaries. Vice Mayor Commissioner We are also poised to aid our fellow Florida neighbors and community, both monetarily and in-kind. Following the aftermath of October 2018’s Hurricane Michael, we assisted several communities in the Panhandle with the donation of 21 new generators through our Police Department. Te City also led an efort to provide assistance and supplies to one town that sufered severe damage from the hurricane, Altha, Florida. Vice Mayor Larisa Svechin even visited Altha to deliver toys, supplies and other items the students lost Alex Lama Jeniffer Viscarra Commissioner Commissioner during the storm. It is these initiatives by our staf and Commission that assure our preparedness and bolster my confdence in our immediate recovery should a hurricane hit. But preparedness is a two-way street. You must now take it upon yourself to prepare your home and your families for hurricane season. I urge you to visit our website, sibf.net/hurricane, and pick up a copy of Miami-Dade County’s hurricane preparedness brochure to ensure you are ready this hurricane season. George ‘Bud’ Scholl Mayor

sibfl.net • summer 2019 9 savvy information City Manager’s Quarterly Report Bridging the Sunny Isles Beach Community Through Capital Improvement Projects

Summer is a time for vitality and energy. Tis season, our sense of invigoration for capital improvement projects is growing to new heights as we complete some long- term projects and lay the groundwork for even more. Te Central Island Drainage Project is currently in its fnal stages. Twenty-six wells were cleaned and tested, and we are already seeing improved performance on our streets. Troughout the upcoming months, the work will continue as the outfalls and drainage structures in the entire City are cleaned. And though our drainage system has been improved, it is now all of our responsibility to keep our storm drains clear of debris and waste. You can do your part by not littering and reporting any drain blockages that you notice. As a coastal city, Sunny Isles Beach is more intensely afect- ed by King Tides, and while the City cannot mitigate the occurrence of King Tides, maintaining clear storm drains will expedite water drainage and quickly clear our roadways as soon as the tide recedes. Christopher J. Russo Also nearly complete is the mangrove mitigation project in the area of the former City Manager skate park. Once the planting of additional native mangroves in this area is fnished, we will work to design an innovative park concept to accommodate a meditation gar- den in consultation with the Public Arts Advisory Committee. Improving our parks If our excellent is a top priority and with children out of school for the summer season, we are under- taking much-needed parks projects. Town Center Park will be receiving a new gazebo this summer which will ofer relief from our Florida sun at one of our most popular staff is the heart summer play areas. As I have previously discussed, the Gateway Park build out is projected to begin of the City, our shortly. Te bids for a contractor were received in March, and we are looking forward to a grand opening in spring of 2020. Te multi-faceted facility will feature recreation and education space for seniors, teens, and other special programming. Te senior compo- capital improve- nent was largely championed by former Commissioner Roslyn Brezin. We mourn her passing this past February and know that she would have been overjoyed to see this ment projects are project come to fruition. Te enthusiasm she fostered will continue to grow through the donation program her family set up for this Gateway Center project in her honor. A major efort we are undertaking to enhance the safe passage around our City is the backbone. the construction of pedestrian bridges that provide a reprieve from traversing across Collins Avenue. Following the great success of the North Bay Road Pedestrian Bridge, we are currently in the design phases for two additional pedestrian bridges to reach new heights over Collins. Te Government Center Pedestrian Bridge is well into the design phase as the conceptual design was approved by the Commission this past February. Te 174 Street Bridge is now in the conceptual design phase. We are planning an open air and park-like concept that is going to add not only a functional

10 sibfl.net • summer 2019 savvy information necessity to our City, but also an aesthet- ically pleasing space for all to enjoy. Tese highly-anticipated projects have long lead times with approval required from multiple outside agencies. We anticipate construction to commence in 2020 and 2021 respectively. Te U.S. Army Corps of Engineers completed their beach sand renourish- ment project last year, which brought approximately 150,000 cubic yards of sand to our beach. And this year, we are scheduled to receive more than 80,000 cubic yards of sand from private devel- opers. Tis past April, the Army Corps of Engineers assessed the condition of existing submerged breakwaters as we pursue other viable erosion mitigation options. Sustaining a proactive City can often become difcult for some governments. Fortunately, we have the staf and re- sources to foresee potential issues in our City. Te Golden Shores Pump Station was overhauled 15 years ago and though functioning at maximum capacity, the pump station is currently being evaluat- ed for upgrades as it is our goal to prevent the potential for failures in the future. If our excellent staf is the heart of the City, our capital improvement projects are the backbone. As Sunny Isles Beach celebrates its 22nd anniversary this June, we can appreciate the hard work and in- itiatives taken to ensure our continued growth and development. Every day we are innovating, developing, and executing projects designed to improve the lives of our residents and visitors. We will con- tinue to keep you updated on the most recent capital improvement project ad- vancements online at sibf.net and on our social media pages.

Parks provide a chance for people to connect—where life long friendships are formed, where the gap between generations is bridged and people discover what they have in common. Parks foster a sense of community and are a vital component of A World Class City. Most SIB City parks are Wi–Fi Hotspots where wireless internet access is free and ad-free. All parks are equipped with a Thor Guard Lightning Prediction System that provides advance notice of lightning conditions. When activated, here is how the system works:

1 ONE long horn blast indicates possible lightning in the area 2 Get TO a safe indoor area immediately 3 THREE shorter horn blasts signal that it is safe to return to the park
