Dear Portlanders, Did you know that the mission of Portland Parks & Recreation is to help Portlanders play? And the arts are fundamental to that mission—activating play through creativity and the imagination. It is no coincidence that we “play” the guitar or act in a “play.” Whether you are 5 or 95, our Arts & Culture programs have something for everyone to learn or enjoy. From hip hop to hula, watercolor to woodworking, or piano to puppetry… we offer classes in music, dance, theatre, creative writing, visual arts, and crafts. We also bring you free outdoor Arts & Culture events in your parks. These events feature Portland’s talented artists and reflect the vibrant cultural mosaic of our city. The arts, like all play, help kids and adults alike to learn, grow, and discover, while connecting us to self, others, and our place in the world. Arts and culture also gather us on common ground—to build community, to open us up to new and challenging ideas, and to celebrate the beauty of our differences—all the more important in these times. So let’s play! We hope to see you often in your community arts centers and parks. PROGRAM SUMMER 2019 THEPLAINSOFABRAHAM.CA Sunday Bandstand by Invitation (Elyzabeth Diaga - Diogo Ramos - Héra Ménard) June 16 Bandstand by Invitation brings together for the span of an evening three artists in the 2019 program. Elyzabeth Diaga celebrates the great female rock icons with Queens of Rock. Re-live the greatest hits from the most influential women of the mid 70's until today such as Heart, Pat Benatar, Blondie, Joan Jett, Eurythmics, Alanis Morissette, Madonna et Lady Gaga delivered with passion, strenght and sensibility as only Elyzabeth Diaga can. Diogo Ramos is a singer-songwriter from Sao Paolo and his music is part of a long tradition of Brazilian folk singers. In 2010, he settles in Montreal where he made his mark on the music scene. In his album Samba sans Frontières, released in 2018, he pays homage to his country of adoption through the interpretation of the works of Gilles Vigneault, Félix Leclerc, Pierre Perreault and his own compositions where Portuguese and French intertwine. From a very young age, Héra Ménard embraced the beauty of nature. Attracted early on to the performing arts, she learned to play the guitar and clarinet, studied singing, devised staging and participated in many contests. In 2017, she launched a first eponymous album inspired by large, open spaces. She won the Gala Country 2018 Discovery of the Year award and also was nominated in the Songwriter of the Year category. THE MULTI-FACETED ARTISTRY OF VIOLIST EMANUEL VARDI BY LYDIA M. TANG THESIS Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts in Music with a concentration in Performance and Literature in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2016 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Rudolf Haken, Chair Associate Professor Katherine Syer, Director of Research Associate Professor Scott Schwartz Professor Stephen Taylor Clinical Assistant Professor Elizabeth Freivogel Abstract As a pioneer viola virtuoso of the 20th century, Emanuel “Manny” Vardi (c. 1915-2011) is most widely recognized as the first violist to record all of Paganini’s Caprices. As a passionate advocate for the viola as a solo instrument, Vardi premiered and championed now-standard repertoire, elevated the technique of violists by his virtuosic example, and inspired composers to write more demanding new repertoire for the instrument. However, the details of his long and diverse career have never to date been explored in depth or in a comprehensive manner. This thesis presents the first full biographical narrative of Vardi’s life: highlighting his work with the NBC Symphony under Arturo Toscanini, his activities as a soloist for the United States Navy Band during World War II, his compositional output, visual artwork, an analysis of his playing and teaching techniques, as well as his performing and recording legacies in classical, jazz, and popular music. Appendices include a chronology of his life, discography, lists of compositions written by and for Vardi, registered copyrights, and a list of interviews conducted by the author with family members, former students, and colleagues.

I have said this many times before, dear readers, so forgive my repeating myself: I am so fortunate to work at The Camphill School. Not only do I get to enjoy lunch with our students in Longhouse and Whitestone, I also have lunch with the Meadowsweet kindergar- teners. I count my blessings that I can share a midday meal with many of the students I cherish knowing. I am fortunate that Meadowsweet kindergarten is also where my youngest son, Flynn, spends his days. Orange Soul Sheet Tipping to the Nu Music Movement Volume 1 issue 10 718-455-0092 [email protected] 818-506-1424 (West Coast office) June1-15, 2007 Kevin Harewood (Publisher) Bruce Jones (advertising sales) ===================== A Look Back to Move Forward We are in the month of June which is hailed as “Black Music Month”. This yearly occurrence has led me to reflect on the music that has been the foundation of the music menu of my life. The first artists I really got into were Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and Sly and The Family Stone. It is a well known fact that Stevie and Marvin recorded for the then independently owned Motown family of labels. Sly recorded for the major Columbia Records. However, his music and visual output still exhibited that he was a bastion of independent thought. In my college days I began an affinity for jazz by coming across Grover Washington Jrs Soul Box and Mr Magic albums. These records made me go back and find the music of Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Dexter Gordon my father had played since I was a little thing. Grover was originally on the independent CTI label owned by Creed Taylor. My excursion into reggae started with Bob Marley’s “Natty Dread” which was on Chris Blackwell’s then independent Island Records. I really got open to hip hop with “Rock Box” on the independent Profile label and “Eric B For President” by Eric B and Rakim which ended up on Island subsidiary 4 th and Broadway. My first job in the music business was at the then independent A&M records.
