Ramón Gómez de la Serna Estos dos epígrafes condensan la experiencia narrativa de la muerte. Si se tiene en cuenta que en la cultura prehispánica la muerte era un trance liberador, una entrega de cuerpo y alma a los dioses, es consecuente encontrar a la muerte documentada en la literatura mexicana a través de su historia, como ocurre también en otros países. Lo que diferencia a la muerte mexicana es cómo ha ido adaptando un contenido al tiempo desacralizador y festivo, con lo que pasa a ser un tema esencial

Brandes The first decade of the 21st century has seen a transformation in national and regional Mexican politics and society. In the state of Yucatán, this transformation has taken the shape of a newfound interest in indigenous Maya culture coupled with increasing involvement by the state in public health efforts. Suicide, which in Yucatán more than doubles the national average, has captured the attention of local newspaper media, public health authorities, and the general public; it has become a symbol of indigenous Maya culture due to an often cited association with Ixtab, an ancient Maya ―suicide goddess‖. My thesis investigates suicide as a socially produced cultural artifact. It is a study of how suicide is understood by many social actors and institutions and of how upon a close examination, suicide can be seen as a trope that illuminates the complexity of class, ethnicity, and inequality in Yucatán. In particular, my dissertation –based on extensive ethnographic and archival research in Valladolid and Mérida, Yucatán, México— is a study of both suicide and suicide prevention efforts.

Godoy Making History: Houston’s “Spirit of the Confederacy” Judicial records usually provide the empirical grist underpinning historical studies of crime, but journalism is the lifeblood of the field. The efforts of reporters, editors, photographers and illustrators have allowed researchers to resurrect bygone crimes, often in forensic detail. In the more recent Latin American past, for instance, the intrepid sleuthing of journalists—whose “narco libros” populate the Spanish-language shelves of book retailers—has spared academics from treading on paths far more perilous than graduate school could have ever prepared them for. Their revelations pertaining to the inner-workings of criminal syndicates and their state cohorts have deepened our information trove, making it possible for researchers to formulate more comprehensive analyses of the underworld. It traces the ways in which the Mex i can film maker Felipe Cazals draws from the sensa tion al ist tabloid Alarma! in the mak ing of his film Las Poquianchis (1976), a film ver sion of the story of hu man traf fick ing that led the tabloid to pop u lar i ty. The visuality of sensa tion al ism works mostly in the ser vice of pow er: it keeps cer tain kinds of vi o lence both out of sight and overexposed. Cazals and other art ists and writ ers who draw mate ri als from sen sa tion al ism com pli cate this visuality and counter it, but they do so by stay ing close to the kind of ob scen ity char ac ter is tic of sen sa tion al ism.
