COVID-19 Effects on Research

With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, all on-campus research activities were suspended effective March 20th. We have since moved into the Research Continuity phase, focusing research on work that can be done remotely, off campus and without human contact. The effects of social distancing have had a multitude of impacts on the research enterprise, as we work to follow federal, state, and institutional guidelines. Please see the Tufts Coronavirus website for all updates from the university.

NIH Adjustments NIH is keeping a log of COVID-19 updates on their website. A few important adjustments include: • All grant applications submitted late for due dates between March 9, 2020, and May 1, 2020, will be accepted through May 1, 2020. NOT-OD-20-091 • For NIH-funded clinical trials and human subject studies affected by COVID-19, if unanticipated costs are identi- fied due to impacts of COVID-19, and unobligated balances are not available to re-budget, recipients may re- quest administrative supplements from the funding ICs. NOT-OD-20-087 • Affected recipients that have active non-SNAP grant projects may extend the final budget period of the ap- proved project period on active grants one time for a period of up to 12 months without requesting prior ap- proval NOT-OD-20-086

Tufts COVID-19 Research Approval Process • All projects related to COVID-19 must be submitted for review via the online Qualtrics form, regardless of wheth- er or not the project requires access to patients or involves work with the live virus. • COVID-19 review is in addition to the Pre-Award review of the RAS proposal prior to submission to the funding agency. Pre-award will not submit a proposal to the funding agency or execute a contract until the internal Tufts COVID-19 review is completed. • OVPR is keeping a running list of COVID-19 funding opportunities on their website. • Dental Research Administration is helping to connect individuals interested in COVID-19 research by creating small working groups to facilitate discussions of research ideas. Our team will also assist with the COVID-19 re- search approval process, identifying relevant funding sources, creating Table of Contents: project budgets, and submitting for IRB approval. IADR and ADEA 2020

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic both the IADR General Session and the ADEA Annual Session were canceled. This was disappointing to the many TUSDM faculty, staff, and students who were planning on attending and presenting at the conferences. Those who submitted abstracts for presentation will still be featured in each of the meeting journal publications. Here is a link to the ADEA journal titled, Journal of Dental Education and to the IADR journal titled,Journal of Dental Research.

TUSDM was named the recipient of two awards traditionally given by the AADR National Student Research Group (NSRG) at the IADR General Session: most student abstracts -35 - accepted, and most new AADR members in 2019-2020 with 42 new members.

Additionally several faculty and students were set to be individually recognized at this year’s IADR General Session. Dr. Pamela Yelick, Professor in the Department of Orthodontics and Director of the Division of Craniofacial and Molecular Genetics, was awarded one of the Wil- liam J. Gies Awards. The William J. Gies Award is given for the best paper published in the Journal of Dental Research (JDR) during the preceding year. Nominations are made by individ- uals, by the Gies Award Committee, and by the Editor of the JDR. Most IADR/AADR awards are restricted to certain disciplines of research, but the JDR Gies Award is one of the few open to anyone who publishes in the Journal of Dental Research. One paper is selected in each catego- ry: Clinical, Biological, and Biomaterials & Bioengineering. Dr. Yoon Kang, Assistant Professor in Comprehensive Care and a member of Dental Research Administration, was selected as a top 10 finalist for the IADR Joseph Lister Award for New Investigators, for his saliva based bi- omarker study titled: “Metabolic profile of saliva samples using mass spectroscopy”. The com- petition was held virtually. Melanie Silvestrini (D21) was selected to represent TUSDM in the Student Competition for Advancing Dental Research and its Application (SCADA) for herre- search titled “Mechanical Strength of a New Dual-Cure Bulk-Fill Composite”. Melanie recently submitted a virtual oral presentation of her research to the selection committee. She will be evaluated on the quality and relevance of the subject matter, presentation, and professional- ism. The winners will be announced in May; best of luck to Melanie and Dr. Yoon Kang.

The IADR has sent individual emails out to the presenters requesting PDF files of their posters be uploaded to their abstract archive site by May 1st. Please look through your emails and upload your poster.

Student Travel Reimbursements - Many ADEA and IADR students were given travel stipends before the confer- ence. You will need to work with [email protected] to determine the amount of money you will have to pay back from the travel stipend. If you were set to receive a travel stipend and did not, again please email Den- [email protected] with your expenses you were not able to get refunded, they will help you with the reim- bursement process. Both ADEA and IADR will be refunding the conference registration fees, so please do not take that expense into account when you are tallying your expenses. If you haven’t received that refund yet, please contact the meeting organizers. Researchers in the News

On November 2nd 2019, Yannis Koroneos (D20) attended the Hinman Sym- posium in Memphis Tennessee and presented his research project titled "Long Term Survival of Dental Implants in the TUSDM Periodontology Clin- ic". This project won First Place Table Clinic at the 2019 Bates Student Re- search Day at Tufts. The Hinman Student Research Symposium is a national meeting with oral and poster presentations from dental students across North America. Yannis represented Tufts at this meeting, among 107 stu- dents from 54 dental schools, from 30 states, Puerto Rico, and 5 provinces of Canada. This year marked the 25th year anniversary of the Hinman meeting which is always held at the historic Peabody Hotel in Memphis. Melanie Silvestrini (D21) recently participated in the USA Pageant which was held this past January 11-12th in Burlington, MA. The Miss USA pageants are affiliated with International Management Group and the joint venture. During Melanie’s time at the pageant she focused on bringing awareness to the dis- connect between mental health, physical health and oral health. She believes there is currently limited access to oral health care mainly due to inadequate insurance coverage and a limited access to providers. Melanie explained these issues to the Miss MA judges during her interview along with plans to promote oral health with free services to the youth in Massachusetts grade schools, in coordination with Har- vard and BU Dental schools. She also believes it is extremely important as a society to donate our time to the youth – whether it is oral health promotion or mental health awareness. Melanie placed as State Finalist in the Miss Massachusetts USA Pageant. She states “Although I will not represent our state in the national Miss USA pageant, I represent the state with my current contributions to dental research and charitable communities, such as Autism awareness.” Melanie believes her experience in the pageant was en- riching, and feels as though it has transformed her self-development and fitness. Melanie had this to say to wom- en in Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), “To all women in STEM, any career you are truly passionate about can be pursued as long as you stay true to who you are and what you represent. I am proud to be a future dentist all while being given the opportunity to embrace my femininity and showcase my best self."

Congratulations to Dr. Meghna Prakash, a visiting scholar in Dr. Andrea Zandona’s cari- ology lab, on being awarded the European Organization for Caries Research (ORCA) Con- ference Travel Fellowship to present at the 67th Congress of ORCA in Cagliari, Italy. Dr. Prakash has recently completed her work titled “In vitro assessment of dentin hardness and shear bond strength on natural carious lesions with and without Silver diamine fluo- ride treatment” under Dr. Zandona, Dr. Yoon Kang, and Dr. Shruti Jain’s guidance. Con- gratulations Dr. Prakash and team!

Devon Ptak - Yankee Dental Conference 2020

Devon Ptak (D20) has been working with Dr. Leopoldo Correa, Associate Professor in Diag- nostic Science and Dr. Matthew Finkelman, Associate Professor in Public Health and Com- munity Service, on dental sleep medicine research since her first year of dental school. Their research has focused on obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a chronic medical condition characterized by recurrent episodes of airway collapse during sleep, and the use of mandib- ular advancement devices (MADs) to help treat OSA by increasing the area of the upper airway and decreasing airway collapsibility.

This year at the Yankee Dental Congress, Devon was able to present one of her research projects titled: “Comparison of Treatment Outcomes for Obstructive Sleep Apnea Patients Treated with Mandibular Advancement Devices by Den- tal Sleep Medicine Fellows at an Academic Institution.” This research evaluated the success of treatment outcomes, based on patients change in apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), for patients treated with MADs by TUSDM’s dental sleep medicine fellows. When the 2017 and 2018 fellowship classes were compared it was found that both classes saw a significant drop in patients AHI (14.8 and 12.1, respectively) and found no difference between the two classes with regards to mean change in AHI. The team also looked at additional metrics, such as jaw protrusion, neck size, and number of follow-ups to see if they were predicative of treatment success. A strong correlation was not found be- tween those metrics and absolute change in AHI. However, it was seen that increased jaw protrusion may be related to increased visual analog scale (VAS) measures for bite and headache pain.

Based on these findings, it was concluded that MAD patients showed comparable improvement in their AHI levels, regardless of which fellowship class provided treatment. This suggests that fellowship classes are receiving compara- ble education, allowing them to consistently provide quality care. Given that increased jaw protrusion (from 70-80%) did not appear to strongly correlate with AHI change, the study team determined that further research should be done to explore the trend between increased jaw protrusion and VAS pain scores. This will ensure that patients are receiving effective care with minimal side effects. Great work Devon!

TUSDM Electronic Research Proposal Intake Form *NEW*

• The TUSDM Research Proposal Intake Form is now available as an online Qualtrics form. The link can also be found on the DRA Website, under the “Getting Started” tab. This form gathers basic information about your po- tential application for funding, so your Local Research Administrator can begin creating a proposal in the institu- tional Research Administrator System (RAS) which is used for receiving institutional approval, as well as direct submission to some federal sponsors. • As a reminder, all applications for sponsored funding must receive institutional review prior to submission to the funding agency. The review process allows for identification of potential administrative, financial, or program- matic challenges to the success of the proposal or program, increases administrative compliance as well as align- ment with Tufts internal policies and processes, ensures successful submission, and maximizes the chances that a proposal will be accepted for consideration by the funding agency.
