Dunster 2010 Abstract This thesis argues that the later works of Italo Calvino function as an apologetic for a non-foundational theology. Calvino’s two late novels Invisible Cities and If on a winter’s night a traveller are viewed as embodiments of self-deconstructing rhetoric. Calvino’s essays offer a literary theory which is practised in these novels to lead to an expression of aporetic epistemology. This technique of ironic reflexivity is described as a rhetoric of the abyss. This becomes an apologetic for a theology of postmodernism when If on a winter’s night a traveller is viewed in terms of its treatment of the death of the author, because its application to theology is shown in a parallel to the historical process of secularisation. Similarly, Invisible Cities is offered as an apologetic for non- foundational theology because by embodying an exercise in rhetorical self criticism it becomes, for the reader, an experience of epistemological de-stabilisation. Reader- response criticism is the framework which makes this possible. An allegorical model of reading Invisible Cities is offered in viewing Marco Polo as a Heideggerean counsellor who supports his interlocutor, Kublai Khan, to explore the inadequacy of a metaphysical mastery in terms of western concepts of imperialism and philosophical absolutism. The counsel offered is compared to the concept of gift as being without Being, and grace as icon, in Jean-Luc Marion’s God Without Being. The equation of the rhetoric of abyss with Tillich’s God as ground and abyss is viewed as inadequate. The argument is made that instead, a careful reading of Calvino’s rhetoric creates an appreciation of the reasons for accepting the radical a-theology of faith put forward by the work of Thomas J.J. Altizer and John Caputo. Its ethical consequences are aligned to the argument made in Mark C. Taylor’s After God, for religion as a complex adaptive system with ethical and social responsibilities. Finally , following on from the pastoral concern of the Polo-Khan dialogue and briefly discussing Calvino’s novel Mr Palomar, links are made to the issue of autism as a spectrum of universal human problem and opportunity, and to the model of the 12 step recovery program of Alcoholics Anonymous as a secular spiritual praxis. It is actually one of the few literary attempts that have managed to palpably approach the realization of Mallarmé's ideal Book, into which the entire world would collapse. Consequently, it has attracted all kinds of interpretation, including sociological, urbanist, even political. Such practices have contributed to bypassing what Invisible Cities is in the first place: a linguistic artifact. Once appreciated as such, the (anti)novel starts opening up as language on language, and as literature on literature, which, according to the author of the article, is the novel's prime concern. Its self-referentiality is presented so condensedly and thoroughly (despite the modest size of the book) that the initiated reader will have made his journey through the fifty-five cities, woven together (precisely as a textus !) by the narrator's voice and the conversations between a fictional Marco Polo and an equally such Kublai Khan, with the feeling that both language and its expression closest to perfection, that is, literature, have been covered in all their crucial aspects. There are also correspondences with the various approaches and contributions of literary criticism. A secondary text the size of an article cannot illustrate them all, but making an imperfect – although representative – selection it can at least hope to succeed as an invitation to a systematic, and inspired, (re)reading of what the article signals as Calvino's most authoritative pronouncement, however invisible, on the world of his vocation.

The author‘s conception of literature as a combinatorial art, intrinsically mathematical itself, is the point of departure. Focal to the study is Calvino’s interest in that which is an essential part of the combinatorial game and the key to Gödel Incompleteness Theory, namely, the elements of surprise and the unexpected - the exceptions to the rule. Other critical approaches to Calvino’s work, like semiotic, structuralism and scientific are interrelated to Mathematics, but what this study proposes is a strictly mathematical approach to complement that which has already been pointed out. A mathematical perspective based on an understanding of Mathematics as more than just numbers encompasses the whole analysis. Mathematics is given its proper place as a humanistic discipline. It is an interdisciplinary proposal of literature and science, pertinent to Calvino’s writing. The purpose is to unveil a “hidden math” which from the perspective of this study is an intrinsic tool in Calvino’s writing process of Città. As a versatile writer, Calvino manages to use mathematics in such subtle ways that it may not be perceptible at first sight.

In a short parable, ‘Museum, on Exactitude in Science'[1], Borges describes the mysterious gild of cartographers which charts such a map. In that Empire, the Art of Cartography attained such Perfection that the map of a single Province occupied the entirety of a City, and the map of the Empire, the entirety of a Province. In time, those Unconscionable Maps no longer satisfied, and the Cartographers Guilds struck a Map of the Empire whose size was that of the Empire, and which coincided point for point with it. The following Generations, who were not so fond of the Study of Cartography as their Forebears had been, saw that that vast Map was Useless, and not without some Pitilessness was it, that they delivered it up to the Inclemencies of Sun and Winters. In the Deserts of the West, still today, there are Tattered Ruins of that Map, inhabited by Animals and Beggars; in all the Land there is no other Relic of the Disciplines of Geography (Borges 325). Although Borges' narrative finishes with a nostalgic conclusion about a superfluous and forgotten discipline, the cartographer's dream of a perfect map has never ceased: it has merely varied throughout history.

    Fairy-Tale Metamorphosis and Becoming–Animal: The Posthumanism of Italo Calvino’s Fiabe Italiane Pablo a Marca Introduction In “Hybriditales: Posthumanizing Calvino,” Serenella Iovino describes Italo Calvino’s literary production as one of “hybriditales,” which she defines as “stories in which reality itself is a continuous flow of crossings” (2014, 220). Both in its historical construction as well as in its materiality, in these texts the human is “permeable to other natures, other matters, and other cultural agents,” meaning that being human already involves surpassing the boundaries of human “nature” (ibid., 219). Such a conception of the human is now part of theoretical discussions that fall under the label of posthumanism. While a standard definition of posthumanism does not exist, it is possible to say that posthumanist theorists typically share a suspicion regarding the historical notion of the human, which placed “man” at the center and created a series of others— woman, non-white, queer, animal, inanimate and so on—that are inferior to him. In reaction to this notion, posthumanism moves past humanism and anthropocentrism (Ferrando 2019, 24). Taking discourses themselves to be shapers of subjectivity and adopting a renewed form of materialism, posthumanists try to rethink the human from an onto–epistemological perspective. In so doing, they demonstrate the arbitrariness of categorical boundaries and address instead the flows between humans and the non-human world. Iovino finds a similar trend in Calvino’s literary production, which can be seen as a hybridization of “human nature” and the non-human world because it depicts crossings among matter, forms and signs (2014, 220).

    12 Hybriditales Posthumanizing Calvino Serenella Iovino Cages and Thresholds n her essay “On Singularity and the Symbolic,” Carrie Rohman analyzes Ithe way Italo Calvino’s character Mr. Palomar muses, in silent conver- sations, about the boundaries that separate humans from other animals. Confronted with the enigmatic singularity of an albino gorilla named Snowflake, or with the neat classification of iguanas in a Parisian reptile house, Palomar searches for “an eternal or permanent system, structure, or taxonomy of meaning” (Rohman 73), a recognizable order whose valid- ity would also extend outside cages and boxes. As though challenging the Darwinian evidence of biological continuity with the implicit evocation of a Linnaeus redivivus, Palomar dreams of a nostalgic taxonomy of “fixed” forms able to “resist the flux that undoes them and mixes and reshapes [them]”— forms “separated forever from the others, as here in a row of glass case- cages of the zoo” (Palomar 86). Calvino is well aware that this dream is an artful delusion: were species separated like cages in a zoo, the order of discourse would prevail over the complexity of nature and its ongoing metamorphosis (Rohman 73). Rohman writes, “[Palomar’s] description [of the zoo] points out the exaggerated and ultimately fantas- tic idea that species are eternally distinct, that species barriers represent some permanent and reliable mode of differentiation. Rather, this passage implicitly exposes the human investment in inviolable and discreet [sic] life- forms. [. .] Palomar longs for species barriers that are clear and unas- sailable, but [. .] such longings are more akin to humanist wish- structures than anything else” (73).

    Abstract: Italo Calvino, attentive observer of life, experienced or imagined. The Italian writer Italo Calvino, who died in September 1985, is remembered as a fabulist and essayist. His writing spans a range that reflects the diversity of his cultural interests but shows a basic consistency of narrative purpose, as outlined in his essays and responses to his cultural environment. The intellectual curiosity that marked Calvino’s writing from his beginnings in the immediate postwar period of neorealism led him to many areas, the recent political situation as well as fantasy that at surface level seemed disengaged. Even though remaining a fabulist, his approach to his material gradually became concentrated on that close observation of the surrounding reality that we find in his last writing (Eng. titles: Mr Palomar of 1983, and Under the Jaguar Sun, 1986). The early distinguishing mark of Calvino’s narrative mixture of authentic detail from Italy’s (partisan) wartime reality coupled with fantasy was evident in his first novel (in English The Pathway of the Nest of Spiders), and in the short stories that continued these themes through the 1950s; but by 1952 he had published the first of the trilogy of short novels (in Eng. The Cloven Viscount, followed by The Baron in the Trees and The Inexistent Knight), later given the title I nostri antenati (Our Ancestors) in which fantasy predominates over underlying comment on the condition of modern humanity. The aim of this thesis is to combine my artwork with literature. The first part of the thesis is an examination of Italo Calvino’s role in 20th-century literature, Our Ancestor. The second section of the thesis explains my evolution as a creative artist. I made an animation called Drifting of A Leaf. From 1952 to 1957, Italo Calvino published three novels: The Cloven Viscount (1952), The Baron in the Trees (1957), and The Nonexistent Knight (1959). I want to show how an illustrator thinking about this book. It is a series of 8 pieces of illustrations. In this illustration part, I decided to use only digital. From draft to final work, I used digital to work. As an illustrator, I have a chance to find another world for literature. I prefer to tell others that my artwork is based on the stories, but not limited to the stories themselves. In my animation, I combined hand-painting and digital work.
