Passoa Advisor Graduate Program in Entomology ABSTRACT The phylogenetics, systematics, taxonomy, and biology of Gelechioidea (Insecta: Lepidoptera) are investigated. This superfamily is probably the second largest in all of Lepidoptera, and it remains one of the least well known. Taxonomy of Gelechioidea has been unstable historically, and definitions vary at the family and subfamily levels. In Chapters Two and Three, I review the taxonomy of Gelechioidea and characters that have been important, with attention to what characters or terms were used by different authors. I revise the coding of characters that are already in the literature, and provide new data as well. Chapter Four provides the first phylogenetic analysis of Gelechioidea to include molecular data. I combine novel DNA sequence data from Cytochrome oxidase I and II with morphological matrices for exemplar species. The results challenge current concepts of Gelechioidea, suggesting that traditional morphological characters that have united taxa may not be homologous structures and are in need of further investigation. Resolution of this problem will require more detailed analysis and more thorough characterization of certain lineages. To begin this task, I conduct in Chapter Five an in- depth study of morphological evolution, host-plant selection, and geographical distribution of a medium-sized genus Depressaria Haworth (Depressariinae), larvae of ii which generally feed on plants in the families Asteraceae and Apiaceae. -

A variety of collecting methods was used, including netting, light attracting, light trapping and pheromone trapping. The specimens were identified by the currently available pictorial sources and determination keys. Many were also sent to specialists for confirmation or identification. The majority of the data was from Kanawha County, reflecting the area of more intensive sampling effort by the senior author. J Biochem Tech (2018) Special Issue (2): 107-114 ISSN: 0974-2328 Medicinal Properties of Daucus carota in Traditional Persian Medicine and Modern Phytotherapy Rosita Bahrami, Ali Ghobadi , Nasim Behnoud, Elham Akhtari* Received: 23 March 2018 / Received in revised form: 06 July 2018, Accepted: 13 July 2018, Published online: 05 September 2018 © Biochemical Technology Society 2014-2018 © Sevas Educational Society 2008 Abstract Daucus carota, commonly known as carrot, is a popular medicinal plant with various pharmacological activities mentioned in traditional Persian medicine (TPM) and modern phytotherapy including antioxidant, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antifungal, diuretic, lithontripic, emmenagogue, intra occular hypotensive, gastroprotective, hepatoprotective, aphrodistic, nephroprotective, antispasmodic, anticancer, antiestrogenic, cardioprotective, and wound healing activities. No serious adverse events have been recorded after ingestion of carrot except for some cases of photosensitivity. Because of its emmenagogic, abortifacient and uterus stimulation properties, it should be avoided in pregnancy. A significant interaction between carrot and lithium has also been demonstrated. Based on a pharmacokinetic study, ingestion of Daucus carota may increase plasma levels of vitamin C, zinc and in lactating women vitamin A, serum ferritin, and serum iron levels. The aim of this paper is to review pharmacological properties, toxicity, adverse effects and dug interaction of Daucus carota in TPM and modern phytotherapy. Introduction Daucus carota commonly known as wild carrot is a very commonly used nutritional and medicinal plant from the family of Umbelliferac. The names used in traditional Persian medicine (TPM) for this plant are Zardak and Gazar. The Wild Carrot is a biennial, 30 cm to 1 m high cultivated plant with a fusiform, usually red root and numerous pinnate, segmented, hairy leaves. -

Bereś* Institute of Plant Protection – National Research Institute Regional Experimental Station Langiewicza 28, 35-101 Rzeszów, Poland Received: September 29, 2011 Accepted: October 30, 2011 Abstract: The experiment was conducted in the 2006–2008 time period, in Nienadówka near Rzeszów, Poland (50°11’ N, 22°06’ E). The high suitability of light traps for the monitoring of Ostrinia nubilalis Hbn. moth flights on maize fields was shown. These light traps were compared to the pheromone types of traps; the “delta” model, and the “funnel” with a pheromone dispenser containing Z–11–tetradecenyl acetate (series ONC036A and ONC048A/107). In the light trap, the first moths were found in the second decade or third decade of June. The population peak was in the first decade or second decade of July, and the end of the flight in August. In September 2007 and 2008, single O. nubilalis moths collected in the light trap indicated the presence of a small second pest generation. The first male moths were captured in the pheromone traps in the third decade of June or the first decade of July, with a slightly marked population peak in the first or second decade of July. The moth flight ended in the last decade of July. The first egg clusters of O. nubilalis were usually recorded 4–7 days after the first moths were found in the light trap. -

Anania coronata (Hufnagel), a Holarctic species of pyraustine crambid moth, has long been treated as having two geographically separated subspecies – the nominotypical Anania coronata in the Palaearctic Region and Anania coronata tertialis (Guenee)´ in the Nearctic Region. Maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference analysis of mitochondrial DNA barcodes both recover four well-supported, reciprocally monophyletic groups within Anania coronata. Qualitative and quantitative analyses of genital structures reveal diagnostic differences that correspond to the four barcode lineages. On the basis of both molecular and morphological evidence, we conclude that Anania coronata is actually a complex of four species. -

The nomenclature of Evergestis anartalis (Staudinger, 1892) comb, rev., a species which has been described three times and of which the names have been placed in three different subfamilies of Crambidae, is investigated. The generic name Maelinoptera Staudinger, 1893 syn. n. is revised as a junior subjective synonym of Evergestis Hübner, 1825 and the type-species of this monotypic genus, Hercyna anartalis Staudinger, 1892, is transferred to Evergestis. Evergestis heliacalis Zerny, 1914 syn. n. and Noctuelia anartalis Hampson, 1918 syn. n., are considered as junior subjective synonyms of Evergestis anartalis (Staudinger, 1892) (Hercyna). Evergestis anartalis Hampson, 1918 (Noctuelia) therefore becomes a junior secondary homonym of Evergestis anartalis (Staudinger, 1892) (Hercyna). Lectotypes of Hercyna anartalis Staudinger, 1892 and Evergestis heliacalis Zerny, 1914 are designated. Evergestis anartalis (Staudinger, 1892) is redescribed; adults, male and female genitalia are illustrated. According to the specimens investigated, it is assumed that Evergestis anartalis is endemic to sub-alpine and alpine altitudes in Central Asia. Key words. Evergestis anartalis, taxonomic revision. Introduction After Staudinger (1892: pi. 3 fig. 17) already figured Hercyna anartalis, he provided the description of this species a year later and described the genus Maelinoptera to include Hercyna anartalis only (Staudinger 1893: 72-73).
