The modern democratic countries have adopted the French model which has been historically imposed. In this model, personal security has been regarded as supreme value guaranteed by the state. The legal definition adopted in Bulgaria in 2015 deviates from that line and goes another direction where “natio- nal security” is regarded as alternative to the “legal order” category. For over half a millennium the life and work of the Polish astronomer and mathematician Nicolaus Copernicus has been described and discussed in countless publications. And yet there are some aspects of his life, as well as the whereabouts of his remains that are relatively unknown to the general public. One of the less explored episodes is the period Copernicus spent at Padua University in Italy. An- other that deserves more recognition is the recent detective story, involving work at the University of Uppsala in Sweden to identify his genetic material, permitting the definitive location of his grave. In this article we intend to shed light on these less familiar facts about Copernicus, hoping that the reader will be enticed to visit those two amazing historical cities: Padua and Uppsala. 1. Introduction Nicolaus Copernicus, or to use his Polish name Mikołaj Kopernik, was one of the very few scientists throughout history whose discoveries have had a profound impact not just on research but on human civilization in general. From the point of view of mathematicians, there are some rather specific aspects of his scientific contributions that make them timeless. Most of all, his work is the first example how a better mathematical model of reality can dramatically improve comprehension of empirical data and significantly simplify forecasting. His work also exemplifies brilliantly how vital for science is liberation from blurring of the boundaries between extrinsic beliefs, mathematical models and reality.

Part 1: Results and interpretation of historical, archaeological, anthropological and anthroposcopic research1 Abstract The article presents a comprehensive critique of the argument in favour of the fi nd- ing of the remains of Nicolaus Copernicus formulated before the genetic research. The arguments based on the knowledge of historical sources are analysed here, as well as the results of archaeological, anthropological and anthroposcopic research, the comparison of the skull 13/05 and the facial reconstruction with the portraits of Copernicus, and also the iconography of Copernicus and the methodology of interdisciplinary research. The critique leads to the following assertion: Based on the results provided by the team of Jerzy Gąssowski before the genetic research, it was not possible to have grounds to assert that the grave of Nicolaus Copernicus had been discovered with a probability of 97% or higher. Therefore, this research should be continued, in order to increase the strength of the argumentation and obtain new evidence. It was the first, and so far only such meeting when it was poss- ible to speak openly and on equal terms for both the supporters and the critics of the thesis that the grave of the great astronomer had been found and the identification of the found fragments of his skeleton had been completed. Paul Legendorf is an example of such an individual – his life and activities were conditioned by the difficult neigh- bourly relations with the Teutonic State in Prussia and the Polish Crown. The situ- ation of the son of the Chełmno Land, which was governed by the Teutonic Order when Paul Legendorf came to this world at the beginning of the 15th century, became much more complex in the middle of that century after a repudiation of allegiance followed by a declaration of war against the Order stated by Chełmno Land’s inhabitants. The position of Paul Legendorf became even more uncomfort- able when in the course of the Thirteen Years‘ War between the Teutonic State and the Polish Crown (1454–1466), more specifically in autumn 1458, he was appointed by the Pope to the position of a Warmian diocese administrator (curiously enough, he ineffectively tried to seize a position at his domestic Chełmno diocese). Ever since he came to Warmia in the summer of 1460 until the end of the Thirteen Years‘ War in autumn 1466, he was forced to maintain the balance between the conflicted parties.

Historical research was supposed to help build a regional identity and this was obvious to people of culture, even to people of politics. The history of Polish presence in Warmia and Masuria in particular was supposed to be a binding agent uniting people and confirming that they are not intruders on this land but a continuation of historical settlement processes. In order to show such processes, first, it was necessary to build a workshop of historical research in the form of book collections, archives, iconography and museum collections, and secondly, to organise a research team and humanities environment in Olsztyn. While thanks to the generosity of Emilia Sukertowa-Biedrawina, Bishop Jan Obłąk, Dr. Władysław Adamczyk, and Hieronim Skurpski, the priceless archival collections, book collec- tions and painting collections were saved from destruction, the creation of a team of serious researchers required some time. It also required institutional solutions.

    ZAPISKI HISTORYCZNE — TOM LXXXII — ROK 2017 Zeszyt 2 http://dx.doi.org/10.15762/ZH.2017.60 ANDRZEJ RADZIMIŃSKI (Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń) Nicolaus Copernicus – a Clergyman in the Times of Breakthrough Key words: the Church, the chapter of Ermland [Warmia], the culture and art of the Renaissance, Royal Prussia, Toruń, Reformation On 19th February 1473 in Toruń, undoubtedly in the Old Town but argu- ably in an impressive tenement house situated at the eastern frontage of the Old Market Square, the fourth and youngest child of Barbara Watzenrode and Cracow merchant, Nicolaus Copernicus was born.1 The boy, who was called after his father, was later a student of the city school at the church of St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist and also both The Cracow Academy and The University of Bologna before eventually becoming a canon of Ermland (Warmia), physician, cartographer, economist and astronomer, the author of the famous De revolutionibus.2 It is no coincidence then, that the best known portrait of Nicolaus Copernicus is on display in Toruń Town Hall.3 If one were to embark upon a detailed inspection of Copernicus’ life and its clerical side one would be struck by the fact that neither in the Toruń picture nor any other widely known of his portraits can one can spot a tonsure which was required even among clergymen of minor orders4 and indeed these were the only orders 1 All the issues connected with Nicolaus Copernicus’ birthplace and his genealogy are dis- cussed by Krzysztof Mikulski in his book, Mikołaj Kopernik.
