Concepts Compared Typically, large caliber automatic cannon suffer from any number of problems that must be addressed by tradeoffs in design. Self­powered guns utilize by­products from firing the ammunition to operate all functions including feed, locking, extraction, and ejection. This means that their parts must be relatively heavy and resistant to extreme stress. Also, even small variations in the ammunition can lead to stoppages. Gatling­type weapons utilize external power, usually electric motors or hydraulic systems, to rotate a cluster of barrels into firing position. While this can promote greater reliability and high rates of fire, the penalties tend to be an increase in complexity and maintenance difficulties, a high system weight and bulk, plus a greater cost. In contrast, Hughes engineers offered their single barrel, rotating bolt, electrically driven “Chain Gun,” so called because of its motorcycle type sprocket and chain operating mechanism. Not unlike an automobile engine’s timing chain, the Hughes system provides unparalleled precision, smoothness and positive action to all phases of the cycle of operation.

COMMENTARY The B-1A was initially proposed as replacement for the B-52, and four proto- types were developed and tested before program cancellation in 1977. The program was revived in 1981 as B-1B. The vastly upgraded aircraft added 74,000 lb of usable payload, improved radar, and reduced radar cross section, but cut maximum speed to Mach 1.2. The B-1B first saw combat in Iraq during Desert Fox in December 1998. Its three internal weapons bays accommodate a substantial payload of weapons, including a mix of different weapons in each bay. Lancer production totaled 100 aircraft. The bomber’s blended wing/ body configuration, variable-geometry design, and turbofan engines provide long range and loiter time. The B-1B has been upgraded with GPS, smart weapons, and mission systems. Offensive avionics include SAR for tracking, B-2A Spirit (SSgt. Jeremy M. Wilson) targeting, and engaging moving vehicles and terrain following.     Options for light/medium AFV gun armament © Anthony G Williams Based on presentations given to the DCMS Mounted and Dismounted Close Combat Symposium, July 2015, and the NDIA Armament Systems Forum, April 2016 This is a huge field to cover, so this can be no more than an overview of the issues involved in armament selection. I will not be addressing the armament of self- propelled anti-aircraft systems or of vehicles armed with mortars or large calibre guns of 60+ mm. There are three elements in armament selection: - the gun and its ammunition - the type of mounting - the context: the purpose of the vehicle on which the weapon is mounted; the purpose of the weapon; the expected target set; and the expected mode of employment. This is of course of critical importance but involves various factors which are outside the scope of this presentation. Guns and ammunition Pictures of guns tend to be uninformative so I'll start by showing comparative photos of the ammunition instead, which tell you more about their relative performance, starting with the least powerful group. Rifle Calibre Machine Guns (RCMGs) are primarily for self-defence, while AGLs and HMGs enable a useful measure of fire support to be provided for dismounts. However, while an HMG delivers a high velocity bullet to long range its destructive effects are limited; and while the explosive charge in a 40 mm grenade provides significant destructive power, the velocity is so low that the steep trajectory and long flight time make hitting moving or fleeting targets increasingly challenging as the range lengthens.

    2012 NDIA Joint Armaments Conference May 14 - 17, 2012 Development of a LW30mm M230 Percussion Prime Chain Gun® Jeremy Vandenbark Project Engineer ATK Armament Systems 480-324-8784 [email protected] Approved for Public Release, 22 CFR 125.4(b)(13) Applicable 1 Development History • The standard LW30mm M230 Chain Gun® has been widely used with AH-64 Apaches and MH-60DAP Blackhawks since the early 1980’s • The M230 Percussion Prime (PP) variant was developed in the late 1980’s by Hughes/McDonnell Douglas to qualify percussion-primed LW30 ammo for the AH- 64 – Two prototype ammunition variants: XM949 (HEDP) and XM950 (TP) – Utilized design concepts from 25mm M242 Bushmaster® Automatic Cannon on Bradley IFV – U.S. Army test fired over 4,000 rounds without incident (summer 1988) – Additional 2,500 rounds fired at hot and cold temperatures without incident (1988) 2 Approved for Public Release, 22 CFR 125.4(b)(13) Applicable Why Percussion Prime? • Hazards of Electromagnetic Radiation to Ordnance (HERO) • OP 3565 Defines precautions and procedures in RF environments • LW30mm ammo suite for the M230 cannon uses PA520 low-voltage electric primers • M788 and related cartridges were rated SUSCEPTABLE in U.S. Navy tests (1983) Susceptibility applies to shipboard operations within HAZ/RAD environment Risk is mitigated during storage and transport by standard packing configuration • Percussion-primed ammunition eliminates HERO concerns for operation near radar for shipboard applications • XM949 and XM950 use M36A2 percussion primers • No
