PREFACE In printing the first volume the material was divided equally to make two volumes. But so much new mate­ rial has come in that the manuscript had to be entirely revised and the result is two large volumes instead of one even with considerable compression. The Family is fortunate in having again had the serv­ ices of General Bingham to carry out this arduous labor in the painstaking manner characteristic of all his work. These two volumes complete the publication of data on hand at the time of revision but new material is still coming in. No further volume is in contemplation but supplementary pages will be supplied to members of the Association from time to time as the record grows. Of course, the printing of so much new material has proved quite an unexpected financial burden upon the Association but this is more than offset by the oppor­ tunity to know about so many fine cousins in whom we may have a justifiable pride. Bartlett, dau. of Amanda (9557), in a long and carefully compiled letter to D. H. Bingham, written June 7, 1867, from New Plymouth, 0.; also, Mrs. H. B. Howe, dau. of (9564). 1002 JABEZ BINGHAM, 1st child of (141) Jabez. b. Feb. 13, 1748 or 49, at Windham, Conn. His father (141) moved to Salisbury, Conn., soon after 1749. Jabez (1002) lived first at Salisbury, Conn. He spent much time at Lebanon, Conn., and at Hanover, N. H., in both places working for Dr. Eleazar Wheelock. One removal from Lebanon to Hanover was in Sept.-Oct., 1770. He also lived near Cannonsburg, Pa., and perhaps at Washington, Pa. In 1796 he went to Hocking River Valley near Athens, 0., with his brother Silas (1006). d. m. One writer says Mary Mitchell, prob. before 1770. Wm. T. B. ( 4992880) says, prob. mar. Elizabeth Brewster, dau. of Daniel; and that she afterwards mar. Job Spencer, of Salisbury, as his 3rd wife, July 17, 1822. Can.DUN 9520 Mary or "Polly," b. ----; m. Silas Pruden-7 chil. (1) ·1002 From Town records, Etna, N. H. .... 1773-91-Jabez Bingham held various town offices. From Vol. 12 of the above said published Town papers. 1783-Jabez Bingham signed petition to have part of Hanover, N. H., incorporated into a new town in 1783. 1784-Also signed petition for an issue of paper money in 1784. In same volume, in neighboring town of Lebanon, Thomas Bingham signed petition. From W. T. I should be exceedingly glad if the Sui:comstances of your family would admit of Jabez's (1002) comeing to your School. He can be under no advantage of Learning att home. (2) 1002 Lebanon, Sept. 6, 1770 Benzah Woodward to Eleazar Wheelock Bingham ( 1002) arrived home well last week & proposes to set out with two teams about the 10 inst. We have all of us been endeavoring to expedite the removal ever since he came home, but I fear Madam ( ?) will not be able to set out so soon. She, with Miss Nabby (perhaps a relative living with them), propose to rid in the Post Chaise as soon as they can possibly be ready. Hutchinson is _to drive for them. The ------ will likely, the most of them, foot it when Bingham goes. Madam is so weak that a little croud overcomes her, that she has her poor turns very often ; tho' on the whole I hope she is on the mending hand. I fear the fatigue of preparing & the journey will be too much for her-to be sure she takes both very leisurely. We have been examining the Scholars this week. I find they make a very good appearance x x x then return & accompany Madam & Family to Cohos (N. Y.?). Mary & Oo --?-- I expect will ride up in the carts. Source-W. T.     Minister to Launch exhibition of Roger Casement Sword and Hat, Kerry Museum, June 18th 2012 I'm very pleased to be here to launch this display of Roger Casement artefacts – in particular his sword and his hat – which were seized by the Metropolitan Police in London upon his arrest in Kerry in 1916. These artefacts remained in the possession of the Metropolitan Police until March of last year when they were returned to the National Museum of Ireland. These artefacts are of particular interest because they were worn by Roger Casement in 1911 when he received a knighthood from King George V for exposing the abuse Amazonian natives suffered at the hands of employers when working on rubber plantations. Today we remember Casement as an Irish revolutionary and the man who travelled to Germany to seek arms and assistance for the Rising. As most of us know, Casement was put ashore from a German submarine at Banna Strand in Tralee Bay, and if I might mention, as an example of the connections that flow between the rising and the First World War, it's perhaps not so well known that the main gun of U-19, the submarine that Casement travelled on, can now be found on display in Bangor, Co. Down where it is part of a monument to Edward Bingham who won a Victoria Cross at the Battle of Jutland. I know that the Kerry Museum are planning a major exhibition on Roger Casement for 2016, and I am very much looking forward to this. There are stories of the impact that Casement had on the people touched by Casement's presence in Kerry that have yet to be told, and his arrest in Ardfert sent shockwaves through the County.

    MAY 31 remembrance ni HMS Defence and HMS Warrior passing the battlecruiser squadron at the Battle of Jutland Battle of Jutland The battle which took place off Denmark’s Jutland peninsula was the largest naval battle of the war and it was definitive in terms of naval engagement for the remainder of the hostilities. The Battle of Jutland was the only time that the British and German fleets of 'dreadnought' battleships actually came to blows. It was a confused and bloody action involving 250 ships and Page 1 MAY 31 around 100,000 men. It saw the greatest ever exchange of naval gunfire. The battle resulted in the loss of HM ships Queen Mary, Indefatigable, Invincible, Defence, Black Prince, Warrior, and of HM TBD 's Tipperary, Ardent, Fortune, Shark, Sparrowhawk, Nestor, Nomad, and Turbulent. Commander Edward Bingham from Northern Ireland was awarded the Victoria Cross for his leadership. The Flag Captain of HMS Iron Duke at Battle of Jutland, was Frederick Dryer from Armagh. Over eighty men from Northern Ireland were amongst the casualties. The German navy sought to engage the Royal Navy with a view to weakening it so that in any later engagements the balance of power would be more in its favour. The German commander, Admiral Scheer, planned to attack British merchant shipping to Norway, expecting to lure out both Admiral Beatty’s Battlecruiser Force and Admiral Jellicoe's Grand Fleet, further away at Scapa Flow. Scheer hoped to destroy Beatty before Jellicoe arrived On May 30th 1916, Admiral Sir John Jellicoe, Commander in Chief of the Grand Fleet, in accord with the general policy of periodic sweeps through the North Sea ordered the ships of the fleet to leave their bases.

    The Noble Society of Celts, is an hereditary society of persons with Celtic roots and interests, who are of noble title and gentle birth, and who have come together in a search for, and celebration of, things Celtic. Winter 2011-2012 Edition Part Two THE WELSH CORGI The Welsh Corgi is a small herding dog from Wales. There are two distinct breeds recognized: the Pembroke Welsh Corgi (The Spitz type) and the Cardigan Welsh Corgi (The Teckle type), with the Pembroke being the more well known. Both breeds make ideal pets and companions. The most famous Welsh Corgis are probably those of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II, who keeps at least four Corgis. The history of the Corgi, like that of most dog breeds, is difficult to trace and authenticate. While there is mention in an 11th century manuscript of a Welsh cattle dog, there is no evidence about whether this is the Corgi or an ancestor. Corgis are herding dogs and perform their duties by nipping at the heels; the dog’s low stature allows it to avoid being kicked in the process. As herding dogs, Corgis work livestock differently than other breeds. Instead of gathering the cattle the way a Collie would, by running around the livestock, Corgis drive the herd forward by nipping at their heels and working them from behind in semicircles. If an animal should turn and charge, the Corgi seldom gives ground, and will bite charging animal’s nose, causing it to turn and rejoin the herd. Although they specialized in herding cattle, Corgis were also used to herd sheep and Welsh ponies.

    All Guns Blazing! Newsletter of the Naval Wargames Society No. 266 – December 2016 EDITORIAL End of the Year again. The NWS relies on the voluntary efforts of its Members to run the club, produce articles for AGB and Battlefleet and run naval games at conventions and the Naval Wargames Weekend. So thank you to those who have helped in ways large and small. Many hands make light work. This year saw the centenary of “Jutland” and the Naval Game in the Heritage Area of HM Naval Base Portsmouth back in May would not have happened without the work put in by Stuart Machin. Dave Sharp is organising the Naval Games Weekend in 2017, taking over from David Manley. See below for the first details. My predecessor described Rob Morgan as “prolific” and I concur. I currently hold several articles from Rob which will appear in AGB over the coming months. So Happy Christmas to you all. Roll on 2017. I always thought it would take a lot longer to get this old.     Remembrance Ni June 01, 2020 remembrance ni Three of the NI officers at Jutland Commander Edward Bingham VC from Bangor, Captain Herbert Meade, DSO from Ballynahinch and Commodore Frederic Charles Dreyer from Armagh Commander Edward Bingham VC Commander Edward Bingham VC, in HMS Nestor in command of a destroyer division at the Battle of Jutland Edward Barry Stewart Bingham (1881-1939), had the distinction of being the only member of the Royal Navy to be awarded the VC while in captivity during World War One. He was born at Bangor Castle, Bangor, County Down, on 26th July 1881, the third son of John, 5th Baron Clanmorris, JP, DL, ADC to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, and his wife, Matilda Catherine nee Ward, Lady Clanmorris, daughter and Page 1 Remembrance Ni June 01, 2020 heiress of a wealthy builder. He was educated at Arnold House, in Llanddulas, Wales, and on the Dartmouth-based navy training ship HMS Britannia before being commissioned as a midshipman in 1897. Promoted to Lieutenant on 30th June 1903, Bingham, who was a fine horseman, was a member of the Royal Navy polo team, which won the Inter- Regimental and Ships Annual Challenge Cup in Malta. At the outbreak of war, he was serving as Lieutenant Commander aboard the Admiralty yacht Enchantress, a miniature liner of some 2,000 tons complete with its own boardroom and wine cellar. The following morning he joined the Dreadnought battlecruiser Invincible as fourth most senior officer in command of A turret. Despite undergoing an extensive refit when war was declared, Invincible was at sea by the middle of August 1914 and by the end of the month had taken part in the successful action at Heligoland Bight.
