When Kate Ward left Te Awamutu College after finishing a hospitality course her dream was to one day run her own cafe. Just over four years later that dream has become a reality. WINTER She recently took over the Lily Pad Cafe on Kaipaki Road and loves her new role. ‘‘The Lily Pad offers a relaxing rural setting with friendly service, great drinks and food!’’ Prior to taking over the business Kate was head SLAM chef at the cafe, so when the opportunity came up to 6999010AA buy it she says it was too good to turn down. ‘‘It’s something I’ve always wanted to do, but THIS SUNDAY @ 1PM never imagined it would be this soon. The cafe is a perfect size, with three staff, and I’m really enjoying operating it.’’ YES IT’S SPEEDWAY TIME! Although only 22, Kate has plenty of experience to back her decision to run a business. CHECK OUT OUR AD She completed a chef’s course at Wintec before heading to Hayman Island in the Whitsundays, IN THIS THURSDAY’S COURIER where she worked at a five star resort. She returned to New Zealand last year and TC110809CA05 picked up the chef’s job at the Lily Pad. OWNER Kate Ward behind the counter of the Kapaki Road cafe. Kate says the cafe complements the nearby Garden Art Studio and gives people a ‘destination’ to enjoy, especially in the weekends. ‘‘People are often looking for somewhere they can go for a few hours, rather than just stopping in for a quick coffee. The Lily Pad Cafe and Garden Art Studio offer a place to visit — visitors can look at the crafts, wander through the gardens and enjoy breakfast, morning tea, lunch or afternoon tea. ‘‘When the weather is good it gets very busy here, so I always encourage our guests to book, particu- larly in the weekend.’’ The Lily Pad menu helps kick off the day well with dishes such as French toast, pancakes, bagels, eggs and muesli. For later in the day there’s everything from BLT’s and bruscetta to salads, salmon, scallops and soups. A childrens menu is available, while there is a tempting array of cakes in the countertop cabinet. Coffee, tea, wine, beer and a range of cold drinks KARL, FROM WAIKATO complement any meal. The cafe has indoor and outdoor dining spaces, with roll down sides to cancel out any poor weather. WATER & EFFLUENT Artworks adorn the walls, while guests can enjoy views of the gardens and surrounding countryside. Currently the Lily Pad is open on Tuesday Owner Karl Hart has 15 years in the Water & 9.30am — 3pm, Wednesday to Friday 9am — 3.30pm, Saturday and Sunday 8am — 3.30pm. Te Awamutu Country Variety Club has a temporary change of venue for concerts until the end of the year. From this Sunday (and every third Sunday of the month after that) the club will meet at the Te Awamutu RSA Club while its regular venue has alterations completed. Members of the public are most welcome to share the entertainment provided by club members and friends, guest artists and visiting country music clubs. This Sunday’s concert will feature Ethel Mould and Judy Walsh from Hauraki Country Music Club. Profiles about both of these artists will feature in Thursday’s edition of the Te Awamutu Courier.

BY GRANT JOHNSTON

Despite dire predictions, the future of country rugby is in good hands if Pirongia Under 19s 7-all draw with Waikato University on Saturday is anything to go by. Unlike many of the game’s more illustrious players, these boys were playing for nothing more than pride and their mates, coaches and families. But that was all the motivation they needed and they gave every- thing they had at Pirongia Park. University fielded a reasonably slick outfit (not the slickest in this Waikato-wide competition though — that’s table topping Hinuera, with University second). TC110809GJ01,02 The teams were inseparable in TRY TIME: Pirongia flanker Mitch Neal charges through a tackle the first half, but University broke (above) and crosses for his team’s try (below). the deadlock in the second spell with a converted try that gave them a 7-0 lead. Pirongia lifted and attacked for much of the last quarter, but stern defence from the visitors appeared to be holding them at bay. It was a warm day for rugby and no-one would have faulted Pirongia if they had wilted late, but they stuck to their task admir- ably and kept hammering away.
