Term 3 Newsletter 18/14 13 September 2018 Phone/Absence Term 3 Newsletter 18/14 13 September 2018 Phone/Absence Line/Fax 04 902 5596 [email protected] Dear Parents and Guardians It was with deep sadness that we were informed late on Wednesday 6th September of the passing of one of the students from Room 1, Sadie Monastra. Sadie passed away peacefully at Starship Hospital, with her family around her. We know that this continues to be a hugely emotional time for the entire family and our sincerest sympathies and best wishes again go out to Jackie, Daniel and Lola. Skylight Trust is an organisation that assists people dealing with grief. Help and resources can be found at https://www.skylight.org.nz/ MATHEMATICS DEVELOPMENT This year we have been engaging in professional development in mathematics. We are starting to notice shifts in student engagement and enjoyment of mathematics and in their ability to solve problems, explain their thinking, take risks with their thinking, and discuss and challenge ideas respectfully. Dinah Harvey, our mathematics facilitator will continue to work with teachers until the end of the year. She has helped teachers to plan engaging mathematical tasks and support students thinking through facilitating rich discussions. Dinah has been engaged to continue this work in 2019. In Term 4 we will hold a whanau mathematics evening. The evening will be focussed around some of the work we have been doing. Dinah will talk to everyone at the beginning of the night and then whanau will have the opportunity to visit classes and participate in problem solving games and activities. PARKING IN THE SCHOOL GROUNDS We have had a couple of incidents recently of parents (without mobility permits) driving into the staff carpark before and after school to pick up their children. We ask that parents please do not do this. There are a tremendous number of students, parents and pre-schoolers moving through this area. Picking up your child from the carpark area puts others at risk. BMX TRACK We are well into the building of our BMX track on the back field. A big thank you to the contractors who have prepared the new surface, (Mexteds) for moving some fill into the track area and doing some basic sculpting. This is very much appreciated. The basic track outline is now completed as well as some tree planting. The student build team will be finishing the project in the next few weeks. The track will open when the grass field becomes available. Ka kite ano Mike Farrelly PRINCIPAL SCHOOL PHOTOS This year’s school photos will be held on Thursday 1st November and Friday 2nd November. REMINDER – HATS A reminder that hats are compulsory in Terms 1 and 4. Hats cost $15 and are available from the uniform shop. THANK YOU We would like to say a big thank you to Otaihanga Landscaping. They have been working alongside the Student Executive designing the area by the back field playground. This has been a long process. First, the Student Executive collected student voice from the whole school, and then alongside Otaihanga Landscaping came up with ideas that would turn the empty space into a magnificent area for students to relax and play in. Thank you, Paula and Duncan, for working alongside our students and helping them turn their ideas into a reality. https://www.landscapingkapiticoast.co.nz/ SPCA - MUFTI DAY 28th SEPTEMBER 2018 On Friday 28th September we will be having a mufti day to support the SPCA. Please bring a can of dog or cat food. Many thanks for your support. YEAR 1&2 NETBALL - TERM 4 This will run for 5 weeks from Wednesday 17th October to 14th November 4-4.45pm. It is held at Te Atiawa courts and costs $30. We will need some Star Helpers to assist in supervising and coaching teams (free training provided on Tues 9 Oct 6-7.30pm). Star Helpers can be parents, caregivers, grandparents, older siblings at college, or anyone interested in developing young players. Please register on Kindo by 25th September and complete the registration/permission form at the office (these are required by Netball Kapiti). TWILIGHT NETBALL - YEAR 6-8 BOYS & GIRLS Twilight teams are of mixed level and ability (and include boys, come on boys!) The focus is on having fun and trying different positions. It starts on Thursday 18th October and runs until 6th December (8 weeks). All games are at 5.30pm at Te Atiawa courts. There is no uniform or practice. The cost is $20 and we will also need some umpires and team managers. Please register on Kindo by 25th September. NETBALL UNIFORMS Please return these cleaned to the office, as soon as possible. Please include the player's name and team. PLASTIC FREE WEDNESDAYS At Raumati Beach School, we want to reduce the amount of plastic rubbish. Room 10 has been learning about sustainability and how to make the world a better place! Plastic is harming our marine life and birds... birds eat plastic thinking it’s food, marine life do too! This will happen every Wednesday! Here are some helpful tips for parents: 1. If you’re going to buy packaged foods, buy in bulk. Raisins, yoghurt, cheese, and much more can be found in bulk bins or family-size packs. 2. Use a drink bottle - water is waste-free, healthy and costs nothing. 3. Use containers to store your sandwiches, or wrap them with paper wrap. Reusable plastic is acceptable! We hope you will join us and support Plastic Free Lunches on Wednesdays!     Attachment i Report [=I DRAFT Page 17 of 121 Paraparaumu Beach, Otaihanga and Riwai Street Bus timetables for these areas have not been shown on the website, because we (Regional Council Transport and Mana Coach Services) are planning to introduce completely new routes and services during the course of 2000. The Changes Most current users of buses in the Paraparaumu Beach area will find that the services they use will be better than before. We hope that the improved services will encourage more people to use the buses so that they can be improved further in the future. There will be two simple, more direct routes instead of the difficult-to- understand circuit routes which operate at present. No more wondering which side of the road to stand on for the next bus to Coastlands! There will be more train connections in peak periods, and there will be Sunday services for the first time. All trips will be operated by low-floor buses to improve access for people who have difficulty using steps, and those carrying shopping or pushing children in buggies. Each route will have buses at least every 30 minutes between 6.00am and 8.00pm, Monday to Friday, with extra trips in peak periods to ensure connections with all trains to and from Wellington. Pine trees planted on ridge above Tennis Court Road. About 1930 - Kawatiri reserve set aside and tennis courts laid down Pine Avenue (now Tennis Court Road) built by Bert Eatwell using a horse and scoop Lillian Eatwell opened a small shop in their home selling basic food items. Early 1930s - Urwins built a shop on the comer ofRenown Road and Poplar Avenue, (now named Valhallah). 1930s - 1940s Eatwell family ran Kawatiri guest house - Bert Eatwell farmed cows and milked them in a dairy shed beside the tennis courts. 1934 - Post & telegraph facilities established in Urwins shop. N.Z. Post Office insisted that the name of the area be changed from Kawatiri, as this name 1945 - 1st Oct. The ‘circle’is centred on Paekakariki village, includes Pukerua Bay to the south, Raumati South to the north, Mt Wainui and the Akatarawa Forest to the east, and extends off-shore to the west.
