FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE RENAISSANCE DRAWINGS FROM THE AMBROSIANA AT NATIONAL GALLERY OF ART WASHINGTON, D.C. JULY 27, 1984. The Biblioteca Ambrosiana in Milan, one of Europe's most prestigious research libraries, houses an impressive collection of manuscripts, printed books, and drawings. From the approximately 12,000 drawings in the Ambrosiana collection, eighty-seven sheets from the late fourteenth to early seventeenth centuries will go on view in the National Gallery of Art's West Building beginning August 12, 1984 and running through October 7, 1984. The Ambrosiana collection contains some of the finest works of North Italian draftsmanship. Until recently, these drawings (with the exception of those of the Venetian School) have received little attention from scholars outside Italy. This exhibition brings to the United States for the first time works from the Biblioteca Ambrosiana by prominent artists of the North Italian Schools as well as by major artists of the Renaissance in Italy and Northern Europe. The show includes works by Pisanello, Leonardo, Giulio Romano, Vasari, Durer, Barocci, Bans Holbein the Elder and Pieter Bruegel the Elder. Some of the earliest drawings in the exhibition are by the masters of the International Gothic Style. Several drawings by the prolific (MORE) RENAISSANCE DRAWINGS FRCM THE AMBROSIANA -2. draftsman, Pisanello, appear in the shew. Figures in elegant and fashionable costumes are depicted in his Eleven Men in Contemporary Dress. -

The Esotericism in Sandro Botticelli's La Primavera
THE ESOTERICISM IN SANDRO BOTTICELLI’S LA PRIMAVERA © Esperanza Parra López. Registered in the Spanish Register of Intellectual Property. Register Number: 08/2011/549. ABSTRACT: This article proposes an iconographic and especially iconological interpretation about the picture La Primavera (Allegory of Spring) by Sandro Botticelli. This fresh interpretation has a strong esoteric component, characteristic of the period when it was created, which has remained largely unnoticed. But the author of this research maintains that in order to fully understand this picture, it is needed to penetrate the Italian Renaissance Mentality. RESUMEN: Se propone aquí, en el presente artículo, una interpretación iconográfica y sobre todo iconológica totalmente nueva y definitiva sobre el cuadro La Primavera de Sandro Botticelli. Esta novedosa interpretación tiene un fuerte componente esotérico, propio de la época en la cual se realizó esta obra de arte, que, muchas veces, ha pasado totalmente desapercibido. Pero la autora de esta investigación, insiste, en que hay que penetrar en la mentalidad del Renacimiento Italiano y sus escritos para comprender la totalidad de dicho cuadro. Meet the Masters February Program Grade 3 How Artists Portray Women Mary Cassatt "The Child's Bath" Leonardo Da Vinci "Ginevra De' Bend" About the Artist: (See the following pages.) About the Artwork: "The Child's Bath" by Mary Cassatt was painted in 1893. This is one of Cassatt's most famous works, it is typical of her art due to it's emphasis on the figure and the common theme of woman and child. This was painted over one hundred years ago, when homes did not have running water and separate rooms for bathing. Unlike Renaissance painters who tried to create an illusion of reality and depth by using scientific perspective, Cassatt's composition tilt's toward us as if we were looking down from above. Our attention is drawn to the tenderness displayed between the woman and her child. The stripes of the woman's dress and the diamond patterns in the carpet provide an almost flat background on which the figures appear to be three dimensional. Both figures are totally absorbed in the bathing ritual. "Ginevra De' Benci" by Leonardo Da Vinci was painted around 1474. During the time of Leonardo it was customary for young women to have their portraits painted just before their weddings. This was probably Ginevra's wedding portrait as she was married in 1474 at the age of seventeen. In this portrait of Ginevra De' Benci the light floods her face and hair to reveal a glowing the tiny curls of her hair and the rounded shape of her face. The soft fabric of her clothing can be seen in the lower part of the painting. -

Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Bridget Susan Buchholz, M.A. Graduate Program in Greek and Latin The Ohio State University 2009 Dissertation Committee: Sarah Iles Johnston Fritz Graf Carolina López-Ruiz Copyright by Bridget Susan Buchholz 2009 Abstract This project explores issues of communication as represented in the Homeric Hymns. Drawing on a cognitive model, which provides certain parameters and expectations for the representations of the gods, in particular, for the physical representations their bodies, I examine the anthropomorphic representation of the gods. I show how the narratives of the Homeric Hymns represent communication as based upon false assumptions between the mortals and immortals about the body. I argue that two methods are used to create and maintain the commonality between mortal bodies and immortal bodies; the allocation of skills among many gods and the transference of displays of power to tools used by the gods. However, despite these techniques, the texts represent communication based upon assumptions about the body as unsuccessful. Next, I analyze the instances in which the assumed body of the god is recognized by mortals, within a narrative. This recognition is not based upon physical attributes, but upon the spoken self identification by the god. Finally, I demonstrate how successful communication occurs, within the text, after the god has been recognized. Successful communication is represented as occurring in the presence of ritual references. -

This talk discusses the work of Leonardo da Vinci, The Annual General Meeting and Annual Vesalius and Fabricius and looks at how the Lecture 2016 nature of the new art inspired and shaped a new wave of research into the structure of the Professor Andrew Gregory (University College, human body and how such knowledge was London), will offer the Annual Lecture on Friday, transmitted in visual form. Introduction In a previous study [1], which included stylistic and diagnostic analyses, it was found that the oil painting on canvas “Mona Lisa with columns”, part of a private collection in a museum in St. Petersburg (Figure 1), is a copy of the “Mona Lisa” by Leonardo (Figure 2) dating to a period between 1590 and 1660. Noteworthy features include the good quality, readability and expressiveness emanating from the work, which presum- ably is of Nordic influence, specifically German-Flemish. Figure 1. This sequence of investigations – which were certainly not aimed at authentication – were examined together with those of the Na- tional Gallery in London, thus enabling comparisons to be made with other works by Leonardo [2-3]. -
