Tietz Trigrams and Tetragrams Again Darryl Francis Brampton, Cumbria, England [email protected] In the August 2018 Word Ways, it was good to see Jeff Grant revisiting his May 1999 article Alphabetic Trigrams and Tetragrams, and providing some additional examples of words and names using three and four consecutive letters of the alphabet. I’ve taken the opportunity to search for some further examples. Additionally, I’ve decided to treat the letters of the alphabet as a circle, and have included here the additional trigrams YZA and ZAB, and the tetragrams XYZA, YZAB and ZABC. My finds (and their sources) are presented below. My thanks to Jeff for the XYZA item. Three particularly relevant ones to this article are these: Undominated Alphabetic Sequences, Ross Eckler, volume 15/2 (May 1982) Alphabetic Trigrams and Tetragrams, Jeff Grant, volume 32/2 (May 1999) Alphabetic Trigrams and Tetragrams Update, Jeff Grant, volume 51/3 (August 2018) We decided to search for words and names containing reverse trigrams and tetragrams. Instead of searching for words with, for example, the trigram ABC, we searched for words with CBA. And likewise for tetragrams – for example, searching for PONM instead of MNOP. And so on through the alphabet. And for completeness, we chose to treat the alphabet as a circular arrangement of letters, thus YZA, ZBA, XYZA, YZAB and ZBAC. Our findings are in the table below. AZY hazy Obscured, dim, unclear, vague W3 A light portable shoulder weapon for BAZ bazooka W3 firing rockets BAZ bombazine A silk fabric W3 CBA bacbakiri A shrike of southern Africa W3 CBA ecbatic Denoting a consequence W2 The shaddock, a citrus fruit related to the CBA lucban W2 grapefruit DCB Nothing! ONLINE EXCHANGE BRESCIA & BRUSY Istituto Tecnico Tecnologico Baracca Kaszubskie Liceum Ogólnokształcące w Brusach 2021 Elisa Lacagnina Thanks to the Etwinning platform I had the possibility to know Ms. Alicja Frymark, English teacher from Kashubian Secondary School (Kaszubskie Liceum Ogólnokształcące) in Brusy, Poland. Since our first online meeting on Skype, we have kept talking, most of all, of our school project called “Online exchange - Brescia & Brusy”. To start, we decided to assign our students a partner to make them work in pairs. Their task was to exchange emails with their friend about the topic given and then, with the information, to write a short article in English. We assigned different topics like Covid 19 and lockdown; traditional food; language uses; interesting facts about the city, the country and the region; school; local tradition. The first part of the project went really well and I was satisfied with the work done. My 5th-year students are enthusiastic about having a “virtual” foreign partner. I decided to start an online exchange because my students felt the need to improve their English speaking and writing skills, as we have only 3 hour English a week. According to me, these opportunities are not only useful to improve the language skills but also to expand your knowledge, to meet new people, to know about the uses and the customs of different countries. Moreover, it was the right moment to start a project of this kind precisely in this difficult period. We have been experiencing a different life, due to Covid 19 home–schooling, restrictions, curfews, prohibitions etc.

  • Early Mycenaean Arkadia: Space and Place(S) of an Inland and Mountainous Region
Early Mycenaean Arkadia: Space and Place(s) of an Inland and Mountainous Region Eleni Salavoura1 Abstract: The concept of space is an abstract and sometimes a conventional term, but places – where people dwell, (inter)act and gain experiences – contribute decisively to the formation of the main characteristics and the identity of its residents. Arkadia, in the heart of the Peloponnese, is a landlocked country with small valleys and basins surrounded by high mountains, which, according to the ancient literature, offered to its inhabitants a hard and laborious life. Its rough terrain made Arkadia always a less attractive area for archaeological investigation. However, due to its position in the centre of the Peloponnese, Arkadia is an inevitable passage for anyone moving along or across the peninsula. The long life of small and medium-sized agrarian communities undoubtedly owes more to their foundation at crossroads connecting the inland with the Peloponnesian coast, than to their potential for economic growth based on the resources of the land. However, sites such as Analipsis, on its east-southeastern borders, the cemetery at Palaiokastro and the ash altar on Mount Lykaion, both in the southwest part of Arkadia, indicate that the area had a Bronze Age past, and raise many new questions. In this paper, I discuss the role of Arkadia in early Mycenaean times based on settlement patterns and excavation data, and I investigate the relation of these inland communities with high-ranking central places. In other words, this is an attempt to set place(s) into space, supporting the idea that the central region of the Peloponnese was a separated, but not isolated part of it, comprising regions that are also diversified among themselves.

Here, we investigate whether SF improves memory 4 for words, memory for numbers, and analytical thinking. In Experiment 1A, participants studied 5 words in Arial and SF and then completed an old-new recognition test where words retained 6 their study fonts. While participants correctly identified significantly more words as ‘old’ in SF 7 than in Arial condition, this difference can be explained by a higher tendency to respond ‘old’ for 8 words in SF than Arial. In Experiment 1B, participants studied words in Arial and SF and then 9 completed an old-new recognition test on those words in either Arial or SF. Participants had 10 significantly higher sensitivity indexes (d’) when words were tested in SF than in Arial, but no 11 other effect was found for d’ or correct identifications. Experiment 2 had a 2 (font: Arial vs.
