Marist College Enews

Important dates Dear Marist Family,

Thursday 14 September The end of Term 3 sees a number of key events take place at the College. Oral Reporting Year 7-12 ACT Championship Athletics, 13 years and over For our Year 12 boys two highlight events are the Year 12 Formal which takes place this Friday night followed by the Retreats next week. Over Friday 15 September the years previous senior groups have viewed these events among the Year 12 Formal most positive experiences of their Marist schooling. I’m sure this year’s Sunday 17 September - Formal and the Retreats will be significant also for our current seniors. I Friday 22 September wish them each a happy and positive experience in these coming days. I want to especially acknowledge and thank the staff who accompany Year 12 Retreats the boys on their retreats and thank also Mr Hawes and the Mission Monday 18 September - Team for their work in organising the retreat program. Friday 22 September Year 9 Middle Earth All of the winter sports have come to an end or are about to. This winter has been a particularly successful one across the codes. As well as winning championships and finals, the manner in which our Monday 18 September boys and teams have played has been excellent. In recent weeks, we have continued to emphasise with Year 11 Specialist Mathematics Lecture, the boys the importance of playing and supporting in the correct way, our way, which is to be respectful 3.50pm - 6.00pm, Theatrette and positive in line with our College values and standards. I was very proud of the boys at all the games I watched in recent weeks and I thank them for responding so well to our expectations. Tuesday 19 September ACT Championship Athletics, 12 years and under The sporting codes celebrate their respective seasons achievements at presentation evenings at this time and early next term. These gatherings have much to celebrate this year and highlights include: Wednesday 20 September • An undefeated season for our First XI Football team, seeing Marist win the premiership for the third Year 11 Study Day time in four years. Year 4 Assembly, 2.00pm, Junior School Hall • The First XVIII AFL team coming from fourth place to win the Rising Stars Competition, the second Friday 22 September time in three seasons. End of Term Year 4-12 • The First XV Rugby team completing an undefeated season, winning the Grand Final for the first time since 2006. As well, the team won the ASC competition and defeated St Joseph’s Hunters Hill Friday 22 September - at the start of the season. Thursday 5 October • It is the first time for many years we have won all three football premierships in the same season. Sri Lanka Immersion Pleasingly it brings to four successful victories for the year with the First XI cricket team winning Saturday 23 September - their competition earlier in the year. Saturday 7 October • Our First XI Hockey team plays its grand final on Sunday. I’m happy for the team and its coaches to Italian Language and Hospitality Tour see the boys playing for the championship. Sunday 24 September - Tuesday 3 October We have enjoyed a truly remarkable year in sport and most pleasing is the positive impact it contributes USA Science Tour to the spirit in the College. I often emphasise that Marist is not a sports school, rather it is a school that plays sport. Sport is not an end in itself, it is a means to an end. That ‘end’ is the quality of the tone in Sunday 24 September - the College, that spirit which comes from boys, staff, families and Old Boys contributing to building our Tuesday 3 October Marist culture – to ensure we truly are an “everything school”. D of E Long Trip Monday 9 October Sincere thanks to everyone for your efforts this year in sport. The College is indeed richer for those Term 4 Commences Years 4-12 efforts. Kate Lofthouse ANU PROFESSOR SPEAKS TO YEAR 10 Head of Languages HISTORY STUDENTS

Professor Joan Beaumont from the ANU enlivened the Year 10 History Mysteries class with her challenging ideas on the significance for Australia of 1917. Drawing on her latest book, Broken Nation, she questioned the boys about their own ideas, and extended their knowledge and understanding of many of the terrible events of that year.

The boys are close to completing their entries for the Simpson Prize and were able to clarify their ideas with one of Australia’s foremost authorities on the topic.
