Relying on scarce sources and on the available literature, the author of this paper tries to explore the correlations between citizens of Palanka, as well as their relations and connections with other Central European people, before, during and after the Great War; observed through their participation in the combined forces of Austro- Hungary and revolutionary movements from 1917 to 1919. The author also depicts the role of the citizens of Palanka in the shaping of the Central European post war creations of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenians and the First Czechoslovak Republic, as Serbian volunteers, members of the Czechoslovak Legion and as peoples’ representatives at the Great National Assembly of Serbs, Bunjevci and other Slavs in Novi Sad on the 25th November 1918.     A STORY OF LOVE The time we live in is so unpleasant that you wish you had not even been born, or rather that you had been born at some other time, on another occasion, simply because right now there is not enough love to go around. What is the use of big houses, expensive cars, winter holidays in Vysoke Tatry, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, expensive perfumes and briefings? These are just shadows of real life. We give ourselves up to the narcotics of delusion, the illusory, secret paths of life, and when it is already too late, with our eyes closed to our own failings, we reach maturity; we suddenly realize that it is too late to start again. The end is here, it is perhaps already peering around the next corner. There is no way we can steal back the years, steal happiness – if there is no love. There may seem to be sun and joy, you may imagine that your success is complete as you earn a medal, in the shadow of great men, but I have seen many who, pockets empty walk with heads held high around this town. Their joy in having nothing is much greater. Because they have this town. They have friends. They have a soul. They didn’t have money for Zagreb, Vienna or Prague. Their money was left in the glasses they emptied with friends with whom they later waited for the sunrise over the Croatian barricades. For some that waiting took too long and they were lost. But we know full well where they are.

Prymak Amid the splendours of the Vatican Museum in Rome, amongst the lush and abundant canvases of Raphael and other great artists, hangs an exceptionally large painting depicting the defeat of the last great invasion of Europe by the Turks: the relief of the 1683 siege of Vienna by a coalition of Christian forces led by the king of Poland, John III, also known as Jan Sobieski.1 Sobieski was the last king of Poland to attempt to restore his country’s power and glory before the steady decline and final disappearance of that state in the late eighteenth century, and he is written into the early modern history of Europe as the man who symbolized the repulse of that power- ful Ottoman attempt to conquer Europe, or, as it was seen then, the last Muslim invasion of Christendom.
