The number of stars is the same as the number of states in the union. The canton or union now contains 50 stars. On the admission of a state into the union, a star will be added to the union of the flag and such addition will take effect on the fourth day of July next succeeding such admission. Pledge of Allegiance I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. OFFICIAL STATE SYMBOLS State Flag Before the design of the present state flag was officially adopted by the Legislature on March 7, 1929, by Senate Joint Resolution No. 18, West Virginia had been represented by several flags which proved impractical. Prominently displayed on the pure white field of today’s flag and emblazoned in proper colors is the coat of arms, the lower half of which is wreathed by rhododendron.
