Visiting Our Cardiff Office Welcome Visiting our Cardiff office Welcome Welcome to the General Medical Council. We help to protect the public and improve medical education and practice in the UK by setting standards for students and doctors. We support them to achieve – and exceed – those standards, and take action when they are not met. You can find out more about how we do this on our website www.gmc-uk.org. This leaflet gives you some information that might be helpful for your visit with us. It includes information about local travel and amenities, and what to do if there is an emergency. Getting to our Cardiff office Our Cardiff office is based at: 4th Floor, Caspian Point 2, Caspian Way, Cardiff Bay, CF10 4DQ We’re open from 9 am–5 pm, Monday to Friday. To make sure we can meet your requirements, please speak to your GMC contact in advance to confirm the arrangements for your visit. Our office is based in the Cardiff Bay area of the city. Caspian Point consists of two similar buildings, which overlook the A4232. Our office is within a short walk of Cardiff Bay railway station, there is a Baycar bus stop close by on Pierhead Street, and a multistory car park is nearby. There are a number of organisations based in the building. A reception desk servicing all organisations is on the ground floor – the security officer will tell us when you arrive. Local amenities If you’d like a hot or cold drink during your visit, please ask a member of staff. Across the road from the office is a Co-operative store. There are also a number of sandwich shops, coffee shops and restaurants located in Mermaid Quay. The nearest pharmacy is on Bute Place. Local transport Train Our office is a five minute walk from Cardiff Bay train station. The main station servicing the city is Cardiff Central. To get to Cardiff Bay from Cardiff Central you need to change at Cardiff Queen Street. However, if you’re travelling into Cardiff Central, we recommend that you continue your journey to the bay using the Baycar bus service. Bus The Baycar and number 8 bus services both go to the bay. For more information about particular routes, go to www.cardiffbus.com. Taxi Taxis can access the Caspian Point car park to drop off and pick up visitors. Your driver will need to access the car park via Caspian Way. Car If you are driving, you can park at Pierhead Street multistorey car park, which is next to Caspian Point. Finding your way around the building Our offices are on the fourth floor of the building. Depending on the purpose of your visit, a member of staff will meet you at the reception desk on the ground floor or you can ask the reception desk to let us know you have arrived. There are toilets, including a disabled toilet, next to the lifts. Emergency procedures The fire alarm is tested every Thursday at 9.30 am. If an alarm sounds at any other time, or if the alarm continues to sound after a few seconds, it means that you should evacuate the building. Please leave the building by your nearest emergency exit. You can find this by following the green emergency exit signs. Once you are outside, please go immediately to our assembly point beside the bike racks at the rear of the car park. If you have an impairment that means you can’t hear the alarm or need help to evacuate the building, please tell the person you are visiting. They will make sure that you have a buddy – someone who will make sure that you get safely out of the building in the event of an emergency. If you or someone around you is injured or unwell and needs first aid, please speak to a member of staff. If you need an ambulance, please call 999 directly (dial 9 first for an outside line if using our office phones). The regeneration of Cardiff Bay is now widely regarded as one of the most successful regeneration projects in the United Kingdom.[1] The Bay is supplied by two rivers (Taff and Ely) to form a 500-acre (2.0 km2) freshwater lake round the former dockland area south of the city centre. The Bay was formerly tidal, with access to the sea limited to a couple of hours each side of high water but now provides 24 hour access through three locks[2] . History Cardiff Bay played a major part in Cardiff’s development by being the means of exporting coal from the South Wales Valleys to the rest of the world, helping to power the industrial age. The coal mining industry helped fund the building of Cardiff into the Capital city of Wales and helped the Third Marquis of Bute, who owned the docks, become the richest man in the world at the time. As Cardiff exports grew, so did its population; dockworkers and sailors from across the world settled in neighbourhoods close to the docks, known as Tiger Bay, and communities from up to 45 different nationalities, including Norwegian, Somali, Yemeni, Spanish, Italian, Caribbean and Irish helped create the unique multicultural character of the area.
